Critical Articulations of Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation engages scholarly essays, poems, and creative writings that examine the meanings of race, gender, and sexual orientation as interlocking systems of oppression. Each chapter in this volume critically, yet creatively, interrogates the notion of identity as socially constructed, yet interconnected and shaped by cultural associations, expanding on the idea that we as individuals live in an identity matrix-our self-concept, experiences, and interpretations originate or are developed from the culture in which we are embedded. The shaping of an individual's identity, communication, and worldview can be read, shaped, and understood through life, art, popular culture, mass media, and cross-cultural interactions, among other things. The aptness of this work lies in its ability to provide a meaningful and creative space to analyze identity and identity politics, highlighting the complexities of identity formation in the twenty-first century.

This is an important contribution to the new urban history, describing and analysing one of the best examples of a company town in nineteenth-century Europe. This archetypal railway town was built on a green-field site by a railway company in 1842-3. It was a major junction, an administrative centre and an important manufacturing centre. Thus it provides an ideal arena in which to study the relationship between company and people and the effects of this claustrophobic association on emerging economic and social structure and politics in the era of large-scale development and modernisation in Europe and America. Dianne Drummond applies the full range of modern urban-historical approaches in this work. It is a shining example of the ways in which new techniques in research, analysis and comparison can redraw the best-known histories. It will be essential reading for urban historians.

Retaining Your Foodservice Employees is the second in a series of three books by Karen Eich Drummond on Foodservice Employee Management. The other two titles are Staffing Your Foodservice Operation and Disciplining Your Foodservice Employees. Employee turnover represents a major concern for foodservice operators--particularly when you consider that half of all restaurant employees leave their jobs within the first 30 days. With firings or resignations come costs: expenses for recruiting and training a new candidate as well as overtime costs incurred while the position is vacant. And beyond the immediate dollar loss, high employee turnover reduces employee morale and job performance, which can result in a significant loss of customers--and profits. Retaining Your Foodservice Employees recognizes that successful foodservice operations can no longer treat employees as disposable assets, especially in light of today's dwindling pool of workers. This quick-reference guide shows you a wide range of strategies for increasing a staff member's employment period and keeping turnover to a minimum. This innovative volume identifies what today's employees want out of their jobs. You'll get a clear understanding of workers' needs that include

This book examines how the current global economic crisis has impacted the global automotive industry from an operations and supply chain perspective. It presents an empirical and theoretical background to help long and short term planning for organisations experiencing adverse trading conditions. Material innovations in automotive technologies are also presented in this book. The contribution of materials to automobile technologies ranges over driving performance, exhaust gas purification, and improved fuel efficiency. In addition to different types of new materials, the authors discuss innovative manufacturing processes that can be used to substitute current materials in modern motorcars to enable them to meet the technical and economic challenges that the automotive industry is now facing. A new low overhead hybrid assessment method that has been designed specifically for small-to-medium-sized (SMEs) organisations is analysed. Moreover, automotive assembly plants are very unique as the variety, nature and frequencies of jobs are more extensive than those observed in other workplaces. As a result, automotive assembly workers are often exposed to major ergonomic risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders (MDD). The authors examine the aforementioned problem in terms of automotive assembly LBP prevalence, symptoms and risk factors. The role of ergonomics in shaping the evolution of the automotive assembly plant is discussed as well.
