A timely examination of the effects of the Great Recession on Americans and the resulting federal reforms to healthcare, employment, and housing policies as a means to alleviate poverty. The Great Recession (2007 to 2009) brought the United States-routinely touted as the richest country in the world-to historical levels of poverty. Rising unemployment, government budget crises, and the collapse of the housing market had devastating effects on the poor and middle class. This is one of the first books to focus on the impact of the Great Recession on poverty in America, examining governmental and cultural responses to the economic downturn; the demographics of poverty by gender, age, occupation, education, geographical area, and ethnic identity; and federal and state efforts toward reform and relief. Essays from more than 20 contributing writers explore the history of poverty in America and provide a vision of what lies ahead for the American economy. Offers a detailed analysis of the impact of the Great Recession on poverty rates across 21 distinct demographic groups, including immigrants, children, seniors, veterans, and various racial and ethnic groups Provides a basis for understanding the causes of the economic crises and the impact on the daily lives of individuals, families, and groups Includes more than 20 contributing writers from universities and anti-poverty programs from across the country Presents charts and graphics to illustrate key aspects of the Great Recession Examines multiple groups in society in terms of how they have been affected by the Great Recession, rather than being limited to one or two segments of the population Looks across multiple regions in terms of groups, segments of the economy, and political trends Provides secondary looks past the first group boundaries to delve deeper into the circumstances of those whose circumstances have drastically changed by the Great Recession

Spectroscopy and Optical Diagnostics for Gases (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016): Ronald K. Hanson,... Spectroscopy and Optical Diagnostics for Gases (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Ronald K. Hanson, R. Mitchell Spearrin, Christopher S. Goldenstein
R2,541 Discovery Miles 25 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This text provides an introduction to the science that governs the interaction of light and matter (in the gas phase). It provides readers with the basic knowledge to exploit the light-matter interaction to develop quantitative tools for gas analysis (i.e. optical diagnostics) and understand and interpret the results of spectroscopic measurements. The authors pair the basics of gas-phase spectroscopy with coverage of key optical diagnostic techniques utilized by practicing engineers and scientists to measure fundamental flow-field properties. The text is organized to cover three sub-topics of gas-phase spectroscopy: (1) spectral line positions, (2) spectral line strengths, and (3) spectral lineshapes by way of absorption, emission, and scattering interactions. The latter part of the book describes optical measurement techniques and equipment. Key subspecialties include laser induced fluorescence, tunable laser absorption spectroscopy, and wavelength modulation spectroscopy. It is ideal for students and practitioners across a range of applied sciences including mechanical, aerospace, chemical, and materials engineering.

Nature and You (Paperback): Mary K. Hanson for Tuleyome Nature and You (Paperback)

R195 Discovery Miles 1 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nature is healing. As explained in the National Geographic article "This is Your Brain on Nature" (January 2016), spending time in nature is like "cleaning the windshield of your brain". It allows you to reenergize your brain cells and focus better. Other reports have documented that spending time in nature relieves stress, lowers your blood pressure, and helps to fight depression. It also gives you a boost to your self-esteem and your spirits. Several recent studies have also touted the stress-relieving benefits of coloring books Just the act of coloring calms the nerves and focuses the brain. Tuleyome's "Nature and You" coloring book for adults combines art and nature, allowing folks to actively participate in their own stress relief while at the same time learning a little bit more about the natural subjects they're coloring. It is hoped that this process will help to forge a positive mental association between colorists and the great outdoors.

A Species Guide for the Berryessa Snow Mountain Region (Paperback): Compiled by Mary K. Hanson for Tuleyome A Species Guide for the Berryessa Snow Mountain Region (Paperback)
Compiled by Mary K. Hanson for Tuleyome
R1,290 Discovery Miles 12 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tuleyome, a nonprofit conservation organization based in Woodland, California spearheaded the campaign to permanently protect the Berryessa Snow Mountain region which includes parts of Yolo, Lake, Napa, Mendocino and Solano Counties. Our efforts came to fruition when, on July 10, 2015, President Barack Obama signed the proclamation that designated the region as the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. The monument is comprised of over 330,000 acres of federal public lands and includes the Cache Creek Wilderness, the Cedar Roughs Wilderness, and the Snow Mountain Wilderness. This species guide contains photographs and information on over 200 distinct species of plants and animals, but they still only comprise a tiny fraction of the flora and fauna found throughout the Berryessa Snow Mountain region. While the guide is not comprehensive, it provides an introduction to the diversity of life found in this rich area, including many common as well as threatened and endangered species.

You can see mnay of the complete articles at our website: www.tuleyome.org. The book is geared toward young readers ages 6 and up. Each page shows the reader a plant, animal or location within the local region, provides them with a little background information, and then poses a question which encourages young readers to do some research on their own.
