Found footage horror anthology comprised of short films from a
variety of directors bound together by a framing narrative in which
a group of burglars break into an isolated house and play the
videotapes they find. The directors to contribute the terrifying
films on the VHS tapes are David Bruckner, Glenn McQuaid, Ti West,
Joe Swanberg and the four auteurs who comprise Radio Silence, with
Adam Wingard directing the sequences that follow the effects of the
videos on the burglars who view them. The actors to appear include
Calvin Reeder, Lane Hughes, Kentucker Audley, Hannah Fierman and
Jas Sams.
for the design of control programs; in extreme cases (as dis cussed
below, by Fine et al., this volume, and elsewhere) it can happen
that immunization programs, although they protect vaccinated
individuals, actually increase the overall incidence of a
particular disease. The possibility that many nonhuman animal
populations may be regulated by parasitic infections is another
topic where it may be argued that conventional disciplinary
boundaries have retarded investigation. While much ecological
research has been devoted to exploring the extent to which
competition or predator-prey interactions may regulate natural
populations or set their patterns of geographical distribution, few
substan tial studies have considered the possibility that
infectious diseases may serve as regulatory agents (1,8). On the
other hand, the many careful epidemiological studies of the trans
mission and maintenance of parasitic infections in human and other
animal populations usually assume the host population density to be
set by other considerations, and not dynamically engaged with the
disease (see, for example, (1,2)). With all these considerations in
mind, the Dahlem Workshop from which this book derives aimed to
weave strands together -- testing theoretical analysis against
empirical facts and patterns, and identifying outstanding problems
-- in pursuit of a better un derstanding of the overall population
biology of parasitic in fections. For the purpose of the workshop,
the term "parasite" was de fined widely to include viruses,
bacteria, protozoans, fungi, and helminths."
The science ofparasitology is particularlyrelevantto the health
ofhumans and animals throughout the world. As such, it provides the
core of the Rockefeller Foundation program ofbiomedical research
called The Great Neglected Diseases of Mankind. While some
bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases are included in this program,
the parasiticdiseases caused bypro- tozoa and helminths almost
uniformly fit into this category. Many ofthem infect vast numbers
of people and animals (of the order of hundreds of millions), but
theyare greatlyneglected bythe scientific establishmentof the
modern world. The principal reason for this neglect, both
scientific and financial, is the fact that these diseases are
primarily problems ofthe developing world. Hence, no vaccines exist
for anyofthe human parasitic diseases; for many, treatment is
either nonexistent or highly toxic; and diagnosis still relies
largely on the visual examination ofbiopsies, blood, and excreta.
In contrast, the discovery ofa spate ofantibiotics has revolu-
tionized treatment of bacterial diseases, and vaccines have been
devel- opedfor manybacterial andviral diseases. Furthermore, the
field ofmicro- biology, which deals largely with bacteriology and
virology, has sparked the scientific revolutions ofimmunology and
molecular biology. In order to examine the present status of
parasitology and the reasons for its putative neglect, as well as
to develop means of remedying the sit- uation, aseries
ofconferences has been convened, bringing together clas- sical
parasitologists and a new and complementary breed of parasite-ori-
ented immunologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, and
population ecologists.
The monograph offers a comprehensive discussion of the role of
evaporites in hydrocarbon generation and trapping, and new
information on low temperature and high temperature ores. It also
provides a wealth of information on exploitable salts, in a
comprehensive volume has been assembled and organized to provide
quick access to relevant information on all matters related to
evaporites and associated brines. In addition, there are summaries
of evaporite karst hazards, exploitative methods and problems that
can arise in dealing with evaporites in conventional and solution
mining. This second edition has been revised and extended, with
three new chapters focusing on ore minerals in different
temperature settings and a chapter on meta-evaporites. Written by a
field specialist in research and exploration, the book presents a
comprehensive overview of the realms of low- and high-temperature
evaporite evolution. It is aimed at earth science professionals,
sedimentologists, oil and gas explorers, mining geologists as well
as environmental geologists.
The complexity and dynamism of modern industries and businesses has exposed shortcomings in the strategy tools currently in widespread use. Senior management is in urgent need of a practical, fact-based, but rigorous approach for understanding how their organizations function, interact with competitors and their market place, and deliver performance over time. The Strategy Dynamics approach offers a means for accomplishing this task, and building a more confident and prosperous path into the future. Kim Warren provides a very clear and accessible introduction to the Strategy Dynamics approach in Competitive Strategy Dynamics. He offers powerful but usable frameworks to explain and deliver the key concern of senior managers and investors - business performance through time. In addition to tangible factors such as customers and staff, he shows how to deal with the unavoidable influence of 'soft' factors such as morale, quality, reputation and capabilities. He also explains how the Strategy Dynamics approach is relevant and applicable to all contexts - new venture development, rapid growth, maturity, decline, rivalry, market entry and so on. Competitive Strategy Dynamics has been written for MBA and Executive Education courses in strategic management, business policy and international management, but the concepts are relevant, too, in other subjects, such as marketing, organizational behavior and new venture development. It is also an important tool for strategy consultants and practising managers, whether in large or small firms, manufacturing or service sectors, public service or not-for-profit organizations.
