Der immer harter werdende technologische Wettbewerb zwingt auch im Konstruktiven lngenieurbau zum grundsatzlichen Nachdenken uber Ziele und Chancen der Erforschung und Entwicklung verbesserter und neuer Eigenschaften von Baustoffen und Bauteilen. Das Anforderungsspektrum bautechnischer Eigenschaften ist meist so vielseitig und so komplex, daB im Sinn einer integrierten Lasung eine monolytische Bauweise nicht zum Ziel fuhren kann. Nur mit einem Verbund von Werkstoffen laBt sich die optimale Bundelung mehrerer bautechnischer Eigensch- ten erreichen. Hierbei sind die verschiedenen Werkstoffpartner des Verbundsystems so auszuwahlen und konstruktiv zu verarbeiten, daB sie ihre Schwachen gegenseitig ausgleichen und wechselseitig vonein- ander Nutzen ziehen kannen, ein Verhalten, das in der Biologie als Symbiose bezeichnet wird. Bei der praktischen Umsetzung solcher Grunduberlegungen in reale Produkte der Verbund- und Sandwichtechnik und der Erforschung ihrer Eigenschaften habe ich mich seit 1970 zunachst an der Ruhruniversi- tat Bochum und dann ab 1972 an der Technischen Hochschule Darmstadt auf die Mitwirkung zahlreicher hervorragender Mitarbeiter stutzen kannen.
