Order and Agency in Modernity - Talcott Parsons, Erving Goffman, and Harold Garfinkel (Paperback): Kwang-Ki Kim Order and Agency in Modernity - Talcott Parsons, Erving Goffman, and Harold Garfinkel (Paperback)
Kwang-Ki Kim
R830 Discovery Miles 8 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this unique analysis of three prominent theorists of modern sociology, theory is understood as implicitly, but importantly, reflecting especially modern problems of individual and social life. From the grand-theoretical systems of Talcott Parsons to the unique symbolic interactionism of Erving Goffman and the radically mundane ethnomethodology of Harold Garfinkel, a wide variety of noted sociological theories have addressed central issues of sociology against the backdrop of modern society. When this modern backdrop is brought into the foreground of analysis, sociological theories assume new depth and breadth and new historical significance. The author outlines features of the modern experience, drawing upon neglected cultural theorists of modernity, and then shows how these features of modernity are reflected and incorporated in the scholarship of Parsons, Goffman, and Garfinkel. The result is an original and eclectic analysis that illuminates previously overlooked dimensions to modern sociological theory, and suggests new possibilities for meaningful and rewarding comparisons between theoretical traditions.

South Korea's Democracy in Crisis - The Threats of Illiberalism, Populism, and Polarization (Hardcover): Gi-Wook Shin,... South Korea's Democracy in Crisis - The Threats of Illiberalism, Populism, and Polarization (Hardcover)
Gi-Wook Shin, Ho-Ki Kim
R2,052 Discovery Miles 20 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Like in many other states worldwide, democracy is in trouble in South Korea, entering a state of regressionin the past decade, barely thirty years after its emergence in 1987. The society that had ordinary citizensleading "candlelight protests" demanding the impeachment of Park Geun-Hye in 2016-17 has becomepolarized amid an upsurge of populism, driven by persistent structural inequalities, globalization, and therise of the information society. The symptoms of democratic decline have been increasingly hard to miss: the demonization of politicalopponents, erosion of democratic norms, and the whittling away of the courts' independence. Perhapsmost disturbing is that this all took place under a government dominated by former pro-democracyactivists. Will the election victory of opposition leader Yoon Suk-Yeol end this democratic erosion, or willthe rift between South Korea's progressives and conservatives only deepen with the next administration? The contributors to this volume trace the sources of illiberalism in today's Korea; examine how politicalpolarization is plaguing its party system; discuss how civil society and the courts have become politicized;look at the roles of inequality, education, and social media in the country's democratic decline; andconsider how illiberalism has affected Korea's foreign policy.

HVDC grids and super grids have sparked so much interest these days that researchers and engineers across the globe are talking about them, studying them, supporting them, or questioning them. This book provides valuable information for researchers, industry, and policy makers. It explains why HVDC is favorable over AC technologies for power transmission; what the key technologies and challenges are for developing an HVDC grid; how an HVDC grid will be designed and operated; and how future HVDC grids will evolve. The book also devotes significant attention to nontechnical aspects such as the influence of energy policy and regulatory frameworks. This book is a result of collaboration between industry and academia. It provides theoretical insights into the design and control of MMC technology and investigates practical aspects of the project planning, design, manufacture, implementation, and commissioning of MMC-HVDC and multi-terminal HVDC transmission technologies; filling the knowledge gap between the technology specialists and VSC-HVDC project developers and key personnel involved in those projects.

The Role of Government in East Asian Economic Development - Comparative Institutional Analysis (Hardcover, New): Masahiko Aoki,... The Role of Government in East Asian Economic Development - Comparative Institutional Analysis (Hardcover, New)
Masahiko Aoki, Hyung-Ki Kim, Masahiro Okuno-Fujiwara
R7,361 Discovery Miles 73 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The role of government in East Asian economic development has been a continuous issue. Two competing views have shaped enquiries into the source of the rapid growth high-performing Asian economies and attempts to derive a general lesson for other developing economies: the market-friendly view, according to which government intervenes little in the market, and the developmental state view, in which it governs the market. What these views share in common is a conception of market and government as alternative mechanisms for resource allocation. They are distinct only in their judgement of the extent to which market failures have been, and ought to be, remedied by direct government intervention. This collection of essays suggests a breakthrough, third view: the market-enhancing view. Instead of viewing government and the market as mutually exclusive substitutes, it examines the capacity of government policy to facilitate or complement private sector co-ordination. The book starts from the premise that private sector institutions have important comparative advantages over government, in particular in their ability to process information available on site. At the same time, it recognizes that the capabilities of the private sector are more limited in developing economies. The market-enhancing view thus stresses the mechanisms whereby government policy is directed at improving the ability of the private sector to solve co-ordination problems and overcome other market imperfections. In presenting the market-enhancing view, the book recognizes the wide diversity of the roles of government across various East Asian economies-including Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and China-and its path-dependant and developmental stage nature.

This collection of papers developed out of a World Bank project on the contentious issue of whether government played any positive role in the success of the so-called high-performing Asian economies. It goes beyond the influential World Bank volume The East Asian Miracle to chart a middle ground that recognizes the diversity among the different East Asian economies and the evolutionary nature of government intervention.
