An investigation of the developing discourses of English language
teachers in teaching and training, showing how teachers are shaped
by the discourses they participate in and how they shape these
discourses. By analysing professional development through
professional discourse the book sheds light on what teachers do and
why they do it.
This book explores the relationship between conversation analysis
and applied linguistics, demonstrating how the analysis of
institutional talk can contribute to professional practice. With a
foreword by Paul Drew, the core of the collection brings together
researchers from a wide range of applied areas, dealing with topics
such as language impairment and speech therapy, medical general
practice, retailing, cross-cultural training, radio journalism,
higher education and language teaching and learning.
Graduate and professional TESOL students will welcome this research methods textbook for undertaking qualitative, naturalistic and action research projects. Uniquely, the book offers a three-level structured progression, suited both to novice and intermediate students with a focus on development as classroom teachers of English, and to advanced students engaged in academic research work in applied linguistics. Every chapter is structured to develop the important skills for undertaking QI in a rigorous and serious way, at whatever level is appropriate for the reader's purpose. The book is both scholarly in approach and written in an engagingly direct and clear style.
Soils and sediments influence current processes, preserve evidence
of past processes, indicate evolutionary phases in landscapes and
provide a basis for relative and absolute chronologies. They
provide an important key to the integration of short-term process
studies and investigation of longer-term landform evolution. This
book, first published in 1985, has been arranged to provide wide
temporal and spatial coverage, with studies ranging from historic
to geologic time scales and micro- to macro-spatial scales. The
interdisciplinary nature of the subject is reflected in
contributions from soil scientists, engineering geologists,
hydrologists and geomorphologists.
This book explores the ways in which professional groups develop
specific interactional procedures for conducting and representing
their activities, all of which contribute to a distinctive
collaborative identity. It highlights the drawbacks as well as the
advantages of collaborative talk, pointing to ways of improving
professional performance. Its investigation of topics such as
identity, argument, narrative, and metaphor means that it should
appeal to researchers outside the fields of applied linguistics and
professional communication, for whom it is primarily intended.

The zombie, popular culture's undead darling, shows no signs of
stopping. But as it deliberately conquers pop culture, zombies also
adapt to suit our needs and, perhaps more importantly, our desires.
This work presents examinations of the romantic zombie, for better
or worse, as the newest inductee to the Hall of Paranormal Lovers.
Why have we elevated the zombie monster to a creature we want to
help, heal, and love rather than destroy? This collection considers
how this transformation began and why, now, we cannot seem to
escape our zombie significant "Other." While these contributors
take myriad positions and theoretical approaches to the romantic
zombie monster, we assert the collection as a whole makes a clear
statement: while some may reject the zombie as romantic partner,
popular culture remains fascinated by considerations of the zombie
as more than a mere body, a physical being devoid of life and
personality. The zombie genre's inclusion of romance speaks to a
burgeoning desire to not only include, but love, these undead
"Others." This volume declares that our love affair with the
walking dead is only just beginning.
The integument plays an important role in the survival of meta
zoans by separating and protecting them from a hostile environ
ment. Its function ranges from protection against injury and in
fection, participation in the regulation of body temperature and
water balance, to respiratory activity, monitoring of the environ
ment and production of signals related to behaviour. All these
result from specific structural, biochemical and physiological
properties of intra-and extracellular components of the integu
ment. Thus its characterization can be best accomplished by a
multidisciplinary approach with authors specialized in different
fields of science. This multi-author book, in two volumes, provides
an up-to date survey of the literature. The first volume deals with
the integument of invertebrates, the second with that of
vertebrates, both organized primarily on a phylum basis. As the
level of knowledge on the integument of phyla differs considerably,
the information provided is correspondingly either limited or con
densed. For some of the smaller groups of invertebrates little
information is available, as often only a few electron micrographs
are to be found in the literature ; on the other hand, from the
large body of knowledge existing for vertebrates, particularly for
mammals, no complete overview can be provided, but publica tions
giving access to further information have been reviewed critically.
