"Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me. Aren't you?" These
famous lines from The Graduate (1967) would forever link Anne
Bancroft (1931-2005) to the groundbreaking film and confirm her
status as a movie icon. Along with her portrayal of Annie Sullivan
in the stage and film drama The Miracle Worker, this role was a
highlight of a career that spanned a half-century and brought
Bancroft an Oscar, two Tonys, and two Emmy awards. In the first
biography to cover the entire scope of Bancroft's life and career,
Douglass K. Daniel brings together interviews with dozens of her
friends and colleagues, never-before-published family photos, and
material from film and theater archives to present a portrait of an
artist who raised the standards of acting for all those who
followed. Daniel reveals how, from a young age, Bancroft was
committed to challenging herself and strengthening her craft. Her
talent (and good timing) led to a breakthrough role in Two for the
Seesaw, which made her a Broadway star overnight. The role of Helen
Keller's devoted teacher in the stage version of The Miracle Worker
would follow, and Bancroft also starred in the movie adaption of
the play, which earned her an Academy Award. She went on to appear
in dozens of film, theater, and television productions, including
several movies directed or produced by her husband, Mel Brooks.
Anne Bancroft: A Life offers new insights into the life and career
of a determined actress who left an indelible mark on the film
industry while remaining true to her art.

Cultural Studies, Education, and Youth: Beyond Schools, edited by
Benjamin Frymer, Matthew Carlin, and John Broughton, addresses the
new cultural landscapes which increasingly "educate" our youth.
With essays from both emerging and established scholars, the book
explores the ways media and popular culture have a growing impact
on our youth, their identities, and everyday lives. In our highly
mediated world, the nature of education has been dramatically
transformed and taken way beyond the walls of our schools.
Identities are formed, values learned, and relationships developed
in the worlds of pop culture and media spaces. Each author brings a
different lens to the study of education beyond the classroom. From
the re-emergence of Che Guevara to the effects of an increasingly
virtual culture, this collection critically attends to the changing
nature of education and the impact of culture in the lives of
youth. Cultural Studies, Education, and Youth: Beyond Schools
raises significant questions and offers important insights for
teachers, youth, scholars, and practitioners, alike.
This volume addresses the importance of measuring psychological
abuse and shows that psychological aggression can be reliably
measured. Part I identifies measurement issues and contains several
scales and inventories for measuring psychological maltreatment.
Part II discusses the interpersonal dynamics with specific
populations, including battered women, low-income women, and
African American women. This remains an important resource in the
field of domestic violence.
Originally published in 1987 this book was designed to present the
most recent research data on assessment of various aspects of
marriage. Noted authorities on specific assessment areas provide
information on conceptual and practical issues in marital
assessment. The chapters include assessment of: behavior; affect;
social cognition; communication; sexual dysfunction; child and
marital problems; family assessment. All the chapters include
reference to specific assessment measures of the areas covered. In
addition, for clinical use, one has been selected by each of the
authors to represent a state of the art measure that can be used by
clinicians. Reliability, validity, and normative data are presented
on these measures, which appear in full in the appendix of the
text. O'Leary provides a context for this book in the first chapter
of the book, and in the final chapter, discusses with his co-author
how they begin their assessments, from the initial phone contact,
the assessment battery, the interviews with the clients and the
couple, to the evaluation of the therapy sessions by the clients.

Starting from the question what is a story? Storytelling Across
the Primary Curriculum leads the reader through the theory and
practise of storytelling as an educational method a method taught
by the author over the last ten years through Primary English
teaching programmes.
This practical book gives teachers the skills and confidence to
use storytelling and the spoken word in new and exciting ways in
the classroom. It will also give teachers the confidence to put
down the book and trust themselves to tell, rather than read, a
story. It provides a wealth of examples of cross-curricular
teaching opportunities, including a section on the ways in which
the teaching of phonics can be embedded in the 'real' language of
story.
Storytelling Across the Primary Curriculum is ideal for trainee
and practicing primary school teachers who want to develop their
classroom practice within the field of storytelling. Students on BA
Primary, BEd, and PGCE courses, particularly those specialising in
English, will also benefit from this book s stimulating and
intuitive approach to teaching English language and literacy.
