Political economy focuses on issues that are fundamental to
individual and collective well-being and rests on the proposition
that economic phenomena do not occur in isolation from social and
political processes. One leading Australian political economist is
Frank Stilwell. Highlights of his work include concerns with the
creation and use of wealth, inequalities between rich and poor, the
spatial implications of economic growth, and the tensions between
economic growth and the environment. Stilwell has been especially
prominent in developing alternative economic policies, with seminal
contributions to understanding the radical shift in Australian
economic and social policies since the early 1980s. He has also
been a leader in the teaching of political economy to many cohorts
of first-year university students. This collection, spanning these
themes, honours Stilwell's contribution to Australian political
economy after more than 40 years teaching at the University of
Sydney. The book provides not only an opportunity to appreciate his
contribution but also a greater understanding of these themes which
remain of crucial contemporary relevance.
In the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis, there have been
many criticisms weighed against private credit rating agencies.
Many claim they only exacerbate financial market volatility by
issuing faulty public statements, ratings warnings, and downgrades.
This instability increases the uncertainty in business environments
and weakens the pace of business investment. Their rating changes
also prompt national governments to reduce their spending at a time
when fiscal expenditures are crucial for economic recovery. Public
Credit Rating Agencies argues for the creation of national public
credit rating agencies, offering the first in-depth discussion of
their implied role and function operating alongside private
agencies. Schroeder provides an up-to-date overview of the ratings
industry and the government bodies that monitor its activities. She
suggests that the proper implementation of public credit rating
agencies will promote the stability of lending, further development
and adaptation of new technology, and increase labor productivity
and the profitability of new investment in businesses. Finally,
this book clarifies the inconsistencies that have surfaced between
public budgeting and a rating agency's evaluation of national
budgets.

Clinical assessment is at the heart of medicine. Health
professionals working in busy clinical settings, such as general
practitioners, nurse practitioners and hospital doctors on-call,
often have to assess patients under considerable time constraints.
This book teaches the reader how to gather clinical information
effectively, accurately and safely even when time is at a premium.
* Provides a systematic method of collecting and assessing relevant
clinical information by suggesting step-by-step examination
routines, including important patient-centred questions * Focuses
on common symptoms and presentations * Treatment reflects the
latest in evidence based practice (including latest NICE
Guidelines) * Specifically covers the clinical skills assessment
(CSA) part of the Membership of the Royal College of General
Practitioners (RCGP) examination * Written by an experienced
medical educator and practicing GP, in consultation with a
multidisciplinary team of medical students, GPs, PG trainees,
hospital doctors and nurses
"Sustainable Healthcare" sets out a vision for medical care of
high quality, manageable cost and low impact on the planetary
systems which sustain us.In tackling the major challenges of our
age, such as resource depletion, loss of biodiversity and climate
change, health services can play a central role, moving from being
part of the problem to becoming part of the solution. "Sustainable
Healthcare" explores questions such as: What is the relevance of
sustainability in healthcare? How does climate change threaten human
health? How can we create low carbon care pathways? How can
healthcare organizations deal better with their waste? How can death
and dying become more sustainable? How can we engage ourselves and
others with this agenda?
Written by an international team combining clinical,
educational, practical and policy expertise in sustainability and
health, this book provides a synopsis of our current predicaments,
and explores some of the emerging solutions. Containing case
studies and resources for further information and action,
"""Sustainable Healthcare """is a practical guide to making
healthcare more sustainable for all healthcare professionals,
managers and students."Once in a while one comes across a book that
makes a deep impact. Sustainable Healthcare is such a book and very
timely in the context of modern healthcare and developing green
policies... The book is clear in ideas of critical thinking,
scientific evidence and practical suggestions for transformative
action... An additional strength in this book are the summary key
papers and reports including key points from the chapters. In
addition, there is a comprehensive list of references in each
chapter... The authors cut through the jargon and challenge the
rhetoric of both fear and denial... The authors give examples of
how we can engage with sustainability such as, diet and exercise,
prescription management, contraception management and family
planning and end of life care... The book provides useful sources,
references and key actions for individuals, healthcare
organisations and policy making departments." - A review by "Prof

The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) plans to construct, during a
two-week period, an X-Band Radar (XBR) on Shemya, AK. Wind speeds
must not, at any time during the construction, exceed a 25 knot
limit set by the MDA for lifting the massive dome panels into
place. The goal of this research was to explore the possibilities
of longrange forecasts to determine the feasibility of predicting
any upcoming two-week windows of opportunity, well in advance, that
will ensure the successful completion of constructing the XBR on
Shemya. In order to reach this goal, the following objectives were
achieved; 1) a climatological wind study for Shemya to assess the
optimal "climatological window" to build the XBR, 2) a detailed
synoptic study over the North Pacific, to gain an understanding of
how synoptic weather systems develop, move, and vary on an annual
basis, 3) a traditional statistical analysis of the data followed
by a Classification and Regression Tree (CART) analysis for pattern
recognition of global teleconnection indices, and 4) develop
forecasting decision trees to assist the 11th Operational Weather
Squadron (OWS) Alaskan forecast hub in this daunting task.
