Women, Rank, and Marriage in the British Aristocracy, 1485-2000 - An Open Elite? (Hardcover): K. Schutte Women, Rank, and Marriage in the British Aristocracy, 1485-2000 - An Open Elite? (Hardcover)
K. Schutte
R1,940 Discovery Miles 19 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Through an analysis of the marriage patterns of thousands of aristocratic women as well as an examination of diaries, letters, and memoirs, this book demonstrates that the sense of rank identity as manifested in these women's marriages remained remarkably stable for centuries, until it was finally shattered by the First World War.

Responding to the Homeless - Policy and Practice (Hardcover, 1992 ed.): Russell K. Schutt, Gerald R. Garrett Responding to the Homeless - Policy and Practice (Hardcover, 1992 ed.)
Russell K. Schutt, Gerald R. Garrett
R4,559 Discovery Miles 45 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Responding to the Homeless: Policy and Practice is largely a product of a unique collaboration between Russell K. Schutt and Gerald R. Garrett and their Boston community. As such, it offers a rich perspective on the problem of homelessness that is derived from the authors' shared experience with researchers, academics, students, providers, policymakers, and homeless persons themselves. Schutt and Garrett take the reader into the shelters and acquaint him or her with the philosophical and practical dilemmas facing line workers as well as policymakers. They also take the reader into the community to better understand the housing market and the dysfunctional continuities among shelter, housing, treatment, and social supports. There are sensitive discussions of the salient health problems that too commonly touch the lives of homeless individuals, such as substance abuse and AIDS. The volume also includes clear descriptions of the sometimes elusive processes of counseling and case management for homeless individuals. The sidebars of "what to do" and "what not to do" contain useful information that will both inform and empower individuals who are working on the front lines, and inspire and prepare future caregivers. While the eminently readable organization and style of the book are sugges tive of a highly practical handbook on the basics of homelessness, the authors and their contributors have also produced a scholarly volume that is replete with current research findings, programs descriptions, case studies, and vignettes."

Proof Theory (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1977): K. Schutte Proof Theory (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1977)
K. Schutte; Translated by J. N. Crossley
R3,704 Discovery Miles 37 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book was originally intended to be the second edition of the book "Beweis theorie" (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften, Band 103, Springer 1960), but in fact has been completely rewritten. As well as classical predicate logic we also treat intuitionistic predicate logic. The sentential calculus properties of classical formal and semiformal systems are treated using positive and negative parts of formulas as in the book "Beweistheorie." In a similar way we use right and left parts of formulas for intuitionistic predicate logic. We introduce the theory of functionals of finite types in order to present the Gi: idel interpretation of pure number theory. Instead of ramified type theory, type-free logic and the associated formalization of parts of analysis which we treated in the book "Beweistheorie," we have developed simple classical type theory and predicative analysis in a systematic way. Finally we have given consistency proofs for systems of lI -analysis following the work of G. Takeuti. In order to do this we have introduced a constni'ctive system of notation for ordinals which goes far beyond the notation system in "Beweistheorie.""

The Practice of Research in Criminology and Criminal Justice (Paperback, 8th Revised edition): Ronet D. Bachman, Russell K.... The Practice of Research in Criminology and Criminal Justice (Paperback, 8th Revised edition)
Ronet D. Bachman, Russell K. Schutt
R4,484 Discovery Miles 44 840 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Practice of Research in Criminology and Criminal Justice continues to demonstrate the vital role research plays in criminal justice by integrating real-world case studies with research methods. By pairing research techniques with practical examples, Bachman and Schutt equip students to evaluate and conduct research. This Eighth Edition includes coverage of new methods and contemporary examples, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, mass participation in social movements, increasing hate crimes, and incidents of mass shootings.

Research Methods in Psychology - Investigating Human Behavior (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition): Paul G. Nestor, Russell K.... Research Methods in Psychology - Investigating Human Behavior (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition)
Paul G. Nestor, Russell K. Schutt
R3,786 Discovery Miles 37 860 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The authors are proud sponsors of the 2020 SAGE Keith Roberts Teaching Innovations Award-enabling graduate students and early career faculty to attend the annual ASA pre-conference teaching and learning workshop. Research Methods in Psychology: Investigating Human Behavior draws on fascinating stories to illustrate the entire research process within a unifying conceptual framework. Bestselling authors Paul G. Nestor and Russell K. Schutt present a clear and comprehensive introduction to the logic and techniques of research methods in psychology by employing a unique combination of two distinct yet complementary pedagogical techniques. First, chapters designed for experiential, hands-on studies put the student in the roles of researcher, participant, and consumer to bring concepts to life. Second, the findings of cognitive science guide the text in a way that is most conducive to learning. This novel approach serves as an effective way to make the world of psychological research fun and rewarding for students, in addition to allowing them to gain the foundational knowledge they need to design, conduct, and present research.

Homelessness, Housing, and Mental Illness (Hardcover): Russell K. Schutt Homelessness, Housing, and Mental Illness (Hardcover)
Russell K. Schutt; As told to Stephen M. Goldfinger
R2,088 Discovery Miles 20 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Humans are social animals and, in general, don't thrive in isolated environments. Homeless people, many of whom suffer from serious mental illnesses, often live socially isolated on the streets or in shelters. Homelessness, Housing, and Mental Illness describes a carefully designed large-scale study to assess how well these people do when attempts are made to reduce their social isolation and integrate them into the community. Should homeless mentally ill people be provided with the type of housing they want or with what clinicians think they need? Is residential staff necessary? Are roommates advantageous? How is community integration affected by substance abuse, psychiatric diagnoses, and cognitive functioning? Homelessness, Housing, and Mental Illness answers these questions and reexamines the assumptions behind housing policies that support the preference of most homeless mentally ill people to live alone in independent apartments. The analysis shows that living alone reduces housing retention as well as cognitive functioning, while group homes improve these critical outcomes. Throughout the book, Russell Schutt explores the meaning and value of community for our most fragile citizens.
