As sales of fair-trade goods explode across the globe, Fair Trade
and the Citizen-Consumer provides a timely analysis of the
organizations, institutions and grassroots networks behind this
growing movement. Drawing on examples from the UK, Sweden and USA,
this book moves away from models of individualized consumer choice
and instead explores the collective cultures and practices that
motivate and sustain fair-trade consumer behaviour. Although the
fair-trade citizen-consumer has been called to action and publicly
represented as an individual 'voting' in the marketplace, this book
reveals how market interventions are editing the choices available
to consumers, at the same time as 'Fairtrade Town' consumer
networks are flourishing. Offering new and critical insights into
the fair-trade success story, this book also contributes to debates
about sustainable consumption behaviour and the growth of 'new'
forms of political participation and citizenship.
Kathleen Wheeler's critical guide analyzes in 135 essays the
narrative practices and stylistic devices of fiction from all over
the English-speaking world. Eleven further chapters focus on the
influence of early psychological writings on fiction, the rise of
international English literature, fiction from the rich post-war
period (when the novel was supposed to be dead), post-structuralist
theory, postmodernism and magic realism, and feminist theory.
The guide also discusses dozens of further writers from across
the world in a geographically arranged chapter, while a final
chapter guides readers through the vast range of available research
resources. The bibliography covers thoroughly the secondary
criticism available, in separate listings for each of the 135
entries, and in a list of both general criticism and
anthologies.
This study sets out the literary, critical and philosophical
origins of deconstruction. It presents a background of romanticism
as formulated by Coleridge, Shelley, and the German Romantic
Ironists in which the "tyranny of reason" is rejected in favor of
an anti-dualist philosophy. Against this background, the challenges
to the philosophy of William James and John Dewey are examined, in
an attempt to clarify later post-structuralist deconstructions of
metaphysics and traditional literary theory. Dewey's philosophy and
his insights into language are discussed in relation to Coleridge
and Derrida, while Derrida's writings are related both to
romanticism and pragmatism. The reaction against
post-structuralism, the "new historicism," is examined as a return
to dualistic thinking and a "forgetting" of the liberating
critiques of philosophy.
Birds of Prey of the East and its companion volume, Birds of Prey
of the West, are the most comprehensive and authoritative field
guides to North American birds of prey ever published. Written and
lavishly illustrated with stunning, lifelike paintings by leading
field-guide illustrator, photographer, and author Brian Wheeler,
the guides depict an enormous range of variations of age, sex,
color, and plumage, and feature a significant amount of plumage
data that has never been published before. The painted figures
illustrate plumage and species comparisons in a classic field-guide
layout. Each species is shown in the same posture and from the same
viewpoint, which further assists comparisons. Facing-page text
includes quick-reference identification points and brief natural
history accounts that incorporate the latest information. The range
maps are exceptionally accurate and much larger than those in other
guides. They plot the most up-to-date distribution information for
each species and include the location of cities for more accurate
reference. Finally, the guides feature color habitat photographs
next to the maps. The result sets a new standard for guides to
North America's birds of prey. Lavishly illustrated with stunning,
lifelike paintings Written and illustrated by a leading authority

Now Choose Life is very different than other faith-based sexual
addiction books. Each chapter offers a unique balance of personal
testimony, practical information and spiritual truth as we follow
the down-to-earth story of the escalation of one man's addiction;
the impact of his compulsive behaviors on his wife and marriage;
and the trials and triumphs of his recovery. Through poignant
glimpses into his thirty-year battle with sexual addiction
interwoven with easy-to-understand professional commentary, Now
Choose Life dispels many of the rampant myths and misconceptions
about this little-understood addiction and provides indispensable
education, empowering hope and a proven way out of the grip of
sexual sin for every struggler. This book will benefit not only sex
addicts and their spouses, but any Christian who seeks a deeper
understanding of sexual addiction and the path to lasting freedom.
Learning that someone you love is involved in sexual sin is
heart-breaking and confusing. Even though an estimated 30-40% of
Christian men struggle with some sort of sexual compulsion or
addiction that is negatively affecting their lives, the awkwardness
and shame surrounding this topic make it difficult for their loved
ones to find the information, answers and hope that they so
desperately need. Written especially for the spouses of those
struggling with pornography, masturbation, affairs and other sexual
compulsions, When Sex Causes Heartbreak addresses the very private
issues relating to sexual compulsions and addiction, honestly,
directly and confidentially in an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand
question and answer format. This biblically-based resource will
provide a deeper understanding of your husband's struggle and help
calm your fears, alleviate your anger and empower you to address
this very real threat to your marriage and self-esteem head-on with
new confidence and strength.
'Contingency Plans' maps the body, the land, and the hollows
therein, eager to determine their dimensions, carried along by
possibility, to find that what once made us anxious is out of the
question, and what has kept us awake now sings us back to sleep.
Note to teachers: excellent for classroom use if you are teaching
villanelles and sestinas.
This book is an examination of the fiction of Edith Wharton, Willa
Cather, Kate Chopin, Jean Rhys, Stevie Smith, Katherine Mansfield
and Jane Bowles, with a view to clarifying the narrative strategies
these women adopt to establish, in varying degrees, a critique of
realism and its hidden dualistic, patriarchal assumptions about
life, literature, and society. While examining the literary
conventions and the innovations of various texts, Kathleen Wheeler
is careful to respect the particularity and individuality of each
of these writers.
