In 1892 seventeen Haida artists were commissioned to carve a model
of HlGaagilda Llnagaay (the village of Skidegate on Haida Gwaii,
British Columbia) for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. The
Skidegate model, featuring twenty-nine large houses and forty-two
poles, is the only known model village in North America carved by
nineteenth-century Indigenous residents of the village it
portrayed. Based on over twenty years of collaborative research
with the Skidegate Haida community, the book features vital
cultural context. Robin K. Wright explores how Haida people
represented their culture to the outside world at a time when they
were suffering from devastating population loss due to introduced
diseases and from ongoing attempts by the settler government to
suppress their culture by making the potlatch illegal. While
promoters of the Chicago World’s Fair used the village to
celebrate the perceived “progress†of the dominant society, for
Skidegate residents it provided a means to preserve their history
and culture. After the exposition, many models were dispersed to
the Field Museum of Natural History and other collections, but
fourteen of the model houses have not yet been located. The book
provides extensive archival information and photographs that
contextualize the model village and might help locate the missing
houses. Wright’s community-engaged research offers valuable
insights into Northwest Coast art history.
Black celebrities in America have always walked a precarious line
between their perceived status as spokespersons for their race and
their own individual success -and between being "not black enough"
for the black community or "too black" to appeal to a broader
audience. Few know this tightrope walk better than Kanye West, who
transformed hip-hop, pop and gospel music, redefined fashion,
married the world's biggest reality TV star and ran for president,
all while becoming one of only a handful of black billionaires
worldwide. Despite these accomplishments, his polarizing behavior,
controversial alliances and bouts with mental illness have made him
a caricature in the media and a disappointment among much of his
fanbase. This book examines West's story and what it reveals about
black celebrity and identity and the American dream.
In the Spirit of the Ancestors celebrates the vitality of
contemporary Pacific Northwest Coast art by showcasing a selection
of objects from the Burke Museum's collection of more than 2,400
late-twentieth- and early-twenty-first-century Native American
works. Essays focus on contemporary art while exploring the
important historical precedents on which so many artists rely for
training and inspiration. Margaret Blackman reflects on building
one of the largest collections of Northwest Coast serigraphs, and
Joe David reminisces about his artistic journey through
mask-making. Shaun Peterson, Lisa Telford, and Evelyn Vanderhoop
discuss the historical precedents for working in styles that were
kept alive only by a few critical artists and are now making a
comeback. Robin K. Wright explores the history of box drums and
their revival. Emily Moore discusses the repatriation of two stolen
house posts and proposes a new concept of "propatriation" to
describe the resulting commissioning of contemporary posts to take
their place. Kathryn Bunn-Marcuse explores the power of adornment
and how clothing, jewelry, and personal adornments like tattooing
express tribal and personal identity in ways both connected to the
past and grounded in the present. The diversity of approaches
presented by these contributors speaks to artists, collectors,
academics, tribal communities, and all those interested in Pacific
Northwest Coast art. Splendid color photographs of works never
before published will delight everyone. Watch the trailer:

This study examines relativistic aspects of Arnold Schoenberg's
harmonic and aesthetic theories in the light of a framework of
ideas presented in the early writings of Ludwig Wittgenstein, the
logician, philosopher of language, and Schoenberg's contemporary
and Austrian compatriot. The author has identified correspondences
between the writings of Schoenberg, the early Wittgenstein (the
Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, in particular), and the Vienna
Circle of philosophers, on a wide range of topics and themes.
Issues discussed include the nature and limits of language, musical
universals, theoretical conventionalsim, word-to-world
correspondence in language, the need for a fact- and
comparison-based approach to art criticism, and the nature of
music-theoretical formalism and mathematical modeling. Schoenberg
and Wittgenstein are shown to have shared a vision that is
remarkable for its uniformity and balance, one that points toward
the reconciliation of the positivist/relativist dualism that has
dominated recent discourse in music theory. Contrary to earlier
accounts of Schoenberg's harmonic and aesthetic relativism, this
study identifies a solid epistemological core underlying his
thought, a view that waw very much in step with Wittgenstein and
the Vienna Circle, and thereby with the most vigorous and pivotal
developments in early twentith century intellectual history.

Taking Mary Shelley’s novel as its point of departure, this
collection of essays considers how her creation has not only

the human psyche, the essays in this book deploy the latest
analytical approaches, drawn from such fields as musicology,
critical race studies, feminist studies, queer theory and
psychoanalysis. The book interweaves the manifold sounds, sights
and stories of monstrosity into a conversation that sheds light on
important social issues, aesthetic trends and cultural concerns
that are as alive today as they were when Shelley’s landmark
novel was published 200 years ago.

A timely follow-up to the bestselling classic "Dividends Don't
Lie"
In 1988 Geraldine Weiss wrote the classic "Dividends Don't Lie,"
which focused on the Dividend-Yield Theory as a method of producing
consistent gains in the stock market. Today, the approach of using
the dividend yield to identify values in blue chip stocks still
outperforms most investment methods on a risk-adjusted basis.
Written by Kelley Wright, Managing Editor of "Investment Quality
Trends," with a new Foreword by Geraldine Weiss, this book teaches
a value-based strategy to investing, one that uses a stock's
dividend yield as the primary measure of value. Rather than
emphasize the price cycles of a stock, the company's products,
market strategy or other factors, this guide stresses
dividend-yield patterns.Details a straightforward system of
investing in stick-to-quality blue-chip stocks with reliable
dividend historiesDiscusses how to buy and sell when dividend
yields instruct you to do soInvestors looking for safety and
transparency will quickly discover how dividends offer the yields
they desire

In 2015 FOX's Empire became a worldwide phenomenon shattering
records for a new primetime black television series with 15 million
viewers weekly, dominating social media, and being hailed as the
savior of mainstream television. With its unique depictions of the
family, the music industry, feminism, masculinity, LGBTQ issues,
race, mental illness, and the American Dream, Empire, a hip-hopera
inspired by Shakespeare's King Lear and the 1980s soap opera
Dynasty, is at the forefront of a renaissance in black popular
culture. Its success sparked a revolution in new programming
created by and starring African-Americans between 2015 and 2017.
Nevertheless, Empire is the most polarizing television series in
the black community. Is Empire shifting paradigms with its
depiction of blackness or promoting destructive stereotypes? This
critical study analyzes the multifaceted issues presented in
Empire's first three seasons from an interdisciplinary perspective.
It assesses Empire's role in the evolution of black images on
television and other mediums of popular culture by examining past
and present diverse bodies of literature and media, analytical
data, and discussions on respectability. Finally, it evaluates
Empire's influence on black empowerment in Hollywood and the
potency of these images in American race relations today.
