The American Cockroach (Hardcover, 1981 ed.): K.G. Adiyodi The American Cockroach (Hardcover, 1981 ed.)
K.G. Adiyodi
R7,930 Discovery Miles 79 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume deals mainly with the biology of the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (1.). Contributors were urged to emphasize recent findings, including unpublished data when possible, a goal that would not have been feasible if it were not for the two previously published books on the basic biology of cockroaches, The Biology o/the Cockroach (1968) by D. M. Guthrie and A. R. Tindall and The Cockroach, Volume 1 (1968) by P. B. Cornwell. Those topics not included in The American Cockroach, such as external morphology, are well covered in the two preceding books. In addition, these books provided a broad background upon which contributors to The American Cockroach have been able to build with recent trends, new and established concepts and integration. Although this book deals primarily with the American cockroach, many chapters offer a comparative approach in sections where the more recent and exciting research has been accomplished on other species. Most contributors place the cockroach in perspective with regard to its appropriateness or inappropriateness for various types of biological investigations. Many questions are realistically left unanswered when no acceptable or obvious solution is apparent; an invitation to new researchers to consider the cockroach as an experimental subject.

Reproductive Biology of Invertebrates - Accessory Sex Glands V 3 (Hardcover, Volume 3): K.G. Adiyodi Reproductive Biology of Invertebrates - Accessory Sex Glands V 3 (Hardcover, Volume 3)

Reproductive Biology of Invertebrates Volume III Accessory Sex Glands Edited by K. G. Adiyodi Accessory Sex Glands is the third volume in the encyclopaedic series and provides very valuable information, some hitherto unpublished, on the distribution, structure, origin physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and evolution of the accessory sex glands in different groups of invertebrates. Volumes I and II of this series (published by Wiley) have given detailed accounts of the structure, origin, composition and physiology of female and male gametes and also provided some information on the mechanisms controlling their production. The secretions of accessory sex glands are indispensable for several key aspects of gamete physiology and for successful fertilization and development in many internally fertilizing invertebrates. Interestingly enough, accessory sex gland secretions are produced, in some species at least, under the influence of gonadotrophic hormones as are the gametes themselves. The data on invertebrate accessory sex glands are scattered in various journals and have not been so far collected, critically evaluated and published in book form. This volume thus fills a void and serves as an indispensable corollary and companion to the two volumes that have already appeared on gametology in the series. About 95 per cent of all known animal species are invertebrates. A knowledge of their sexual, reproductive, and development biology is essential for the effective management of species that are economically useful to man or are harmful to him, his crops, and livestock. This treatise is the first to cover all aspects of reproduction and development of the entire spectrum of invertebrates -- terrestrial, marine, freshwater, brackish-water, free-living, and parasitic. The chapters, by leading world experts in their fields, are up-to-date and informative, and suggest a number of problems for future research. "Progress in Male Gamete Ultrastructure and Phylogeny" (issued in parts A--C) is the ninth volume in the series.
