For this landmark 25th book in his highly successful patchwork and
quilt series, Kaffe Fassett has chosen the southern coast of
England as the inspiration for his new collection of quilts.
Beachgoers have long enjoyed the rocky shores near Hastings in East
Sussex for their wild beauty and classic architecture. Featuring
several miles of coastline, this seaside community has its roots in
the fishing industry and was the site of the Norman Conquest's
Battle of Hastings in 1066. Once a popular Victorian resort area,
this gem of the southern coast is now experiencing a travel
renaissance thanks to a thriving arts movement. The gallery section
of the book showcases the 21 new designs, all brilliantly
photographed on location by Debbie Patterson. The deep jewel tones
of Kaffe's Maroon Frames are enhanced by the geometric lines of
similarly toned beach huts. Kaffe's Vintage Stars has an old-world
quality featuring earthy tones that are brilliantly set against the
backdrop of a brick garden wall. The stunning Colour Garden quilt,
featured on the cover, feels perfectly at home draped over an old
fishing boat overlooking the sea, while his confectionary Fruit
Sorbet cushion showcases taffy-inspired pastels sure to inspire a
cozy afternoon by the beach. With both Kaffe's classic fabrics and
his forward-thinking new designs to choose from, quilters can find
an eclectic mix of patterns and colors ranging from Philip Jacobs'
eye-catching large-scale floral prints to Brandon Mably's
smaller-scale quirky patterns. In addition to the quilt designs,
Quilts by the Sea includes detailed step-by-step instructions,
accompanied by a flat shot of each quilt with the relevant block or
quilt assembly diagram, while a how-to section offers more detailed
guidance.
With his unerring eye, Kaffe has succeeded in finding the perfect
location for his exquisite new collection of quilts, featuring both
his scintillating new fabric designs and his classics, all in his
unique color palette. This time he has chosen the medieval English
village of Lavenham in Suffolk, where the 19 quilts in this book
are set off against the ancient half-timbered Tudor houses. They
are displayed in all their glory in a sumptuous eye-catching quilt
gallery. Included in this set of new designs are many very special
ones by Kaffe, and several by his long-time friend and co-designer,
Liza Prior Lucy. Kaffe's Starry Night, featured on the cover, fussy
cuts some of his brilliant floral fabrics in deep rich colors to
great effect, setting them off by surrounding stars in his Shot
Cottons. Shards translates the traditional Broken Dishes design
into deliciously soft and subtle blends of pastel fabrics, shown
off to perfection against the pale plaster and weathered timbers of
the Lavenham houses. In a quite different vein, the boldly
contrasting background stripes in black and white fabric in
Blooming Columns make a dramatic contrast to the huge fussy-cut
flowers appliqued onto it. This book--the 23rd in the
series--includes a range of quilts for all skill levels, from
beginners to advanced. Shaded Squares is one such lovely quilt for
first timers, with its cleverly shaded squares each made up from
two large triangles, one plain and one striped in Kaffe's Shot
Cotton and Wide Stripe fabrics. Flat shots, a practical know-how
section and glossary, back up the fully illustrated, step-by-step
instructions for each quilt.

In this 21st installment of Kaffe Fassett's ever-popular series of
patchwork and quilting books, Kaffe has chosen to show off his
latest range of fabrics by revisiting many of his favorite
medallion quilt blocks. Photographed on location at the
world-famous Hidcote Manor Garden in the beautiful Cotswolds
countryside, these delectable quilts find their perfect setting
among the brilliant flower borders, avenues of trees, and stunning
architectural features that make Hidcote one of the most visited
gardens in the U.K. Medallion quilts have universal appeal and the
simple framework of the medallion design makes a great vehicle for
Kaffe's eye-catching color combinations in his brilliant range of
fabric designs. Assisted by his team of designers and makers, Kaffe
has created an exquisite and varied range of 19 medallion designs,
among them: the rich Berry Ice Cream quilt, photographed in
Hidcote's world famous Red Border the dramatic Dark Gameboard,
photographed against the geometric precision of Hidcote's famous
topiary hedges the soft Flowery Jar, its pink and blue themed
design echoing the colors of the flowers in Hidcote's early summer
border Kaffe Fassett's Quilts in the Cotswolds provides all the
basic instructional text, diagrams, and templates to make the
quilts, plus a section on basic patchwork techniques for less
experienced quilters.
Foreword by Kaffe Fassett A visual journey through the decades,
Vintage Knitwear takes a close look at the key periods, significant
styles, iconic designers and cultural influences in fashion
knitwear. Organized chronologically, this book enables the reader
to identify the unique constructions, innovative finishes and
technical developments that determine the most influential knitwear
designs of the decades of the twentieth century. Individual pieces
that epitomize the defining characteristic of each designer or era
are analyzed in detail.
This is a unique opportunity to step back in time and learn how to
recreate the earliest dated piece of British patchwork - the 1718
coverlet. The coverlet is the earliest known British patchwork that
has a date worked into it and forms a benchmark against which all
other rare survivors of early 18th century patchwork can be
compared. Learn how to piece each of the stunning 69 quilt blocks -
this unique book features a block directory and instructions for
how to piece each of the blocks using the original mosaic piecing
technique, as well as more accessible modern techniques. The
traditional technique used to piece the blocks is known as 'Mosaic
patchwork' and is a time-consuming method requiring the use of
paper for templates. Some of the paper templates still remain in
the coverlet and provide tantalising glimpses of printed and hand
written text including bills, letters and printed text as well as
hand drawn designs for the quilt. Quilt historian, Bridget Long,
explores the fascinating history surrounding the coverlet and its
discovery by the Quilter's Guild. Experienced quilt author, Susan
Briscoe, explores how a replica quilt was painstakingly reproduced
using the original mosaic piecing technique. There is information
about the original fabrics used to create the coverlet and what
kind of modern fabrics lend themselves best to recreating the
quilt, using a variety of different techniques. This makes it
perfect for the more experienced quilter looking for a challenge,
as well as anyone fascinated by the history of this traditional
craft.

Kaffe Fassett has led an extraordinary life and is a captivating
storyteller with a vivid memory. Born in 1937 in San Francisco, he
spent much of his youth in Big Sur, where his parents bought a log
cabin from Orson Welles and transformed it into the world-famous
Nepenthe restaurant, a gathering place of artists of all sorts
(Kaffe has many stories to tell about mingling with the likes of
Olivia de Havilland, Elizabeth Taylor, and Henry Miller). After
attending a boarding school run by the disciples of Krishunamurti,
an Indian guru, he studied painting on scholarship at the School of
the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, but left after less than one
year and traveled to England, where he ultimately made his home.
After struggling to make a living as a fine artist for several
years, Fassett met the fashion designer Bill Gibb and began
designing knitwear for his collection. He went on to design
knitwear for Missoni and for private clients like Lauren Bacall,
Shirley MacLaine, and Barbra Streisand, and to revolutionise the
hand knitting world with his explosive use of colour. Further
explorations led him to needlepoint, mosaics, rug-making, yarn and
fabric design, set design and quilting. Now in his 70s, Fassett
continues to produce new work in his studio in London and to travel
worldwide to teach and lecture. This intimate autobiography is
lavishly filled with Fassett's amazing stories about his bohemian
childhood, his hard-earned rise to fame, and all of his creative
pursuits. It includes photos of him throughout his life (including
his stint as a model in Paris), his home (which is an artwork in
itself), his work (everything from childhood drawings to pencil
sketches, to oil paintings, to massive tapestries and set designs,
to hand knits and quilts) as well as the people and places around
the world that have inspired him.
Brought together here for the first time ever, a collection of over
190 of Kaffe Fassett's most accomplished and successful knitting
