Die glanzenden, architektonisch gebauten Wolkenkratzer, das Einkaufsparadies, das Schlaraffenland und ein Ort, wo die Kultur von Ost und West sich trifft, all dies fasziniert den Touristen dermassen, dass sie immer wieder nach Hongkong zuruckkehren. Die Tourismuseinnahmen sind daher eine bedeutende Devisenquelle fur Hongkongs Wirtschaft. Das Jahr 1997 hatte fur Hongkong eine schwerwiegende Bedeutung. Die Ubergabe der Souveranitat Hongkongs an die VR China im Juli fuhrte zu vielen Bedenken einer Vielzahl von Menschen. Dieses grosse Ereignis lockte jedoch zahlreiche Besucher nach Hongkong, um die Ubergabe live an Ort und Stelle mitzuerleben. Doch die darauffolgenden Krisen in Asien verursachten einen Ruckgang der Besucherzahlen. Die vorliegende Arbeit soll Aufschluss daruber geben, wie der Tourismus sich in Hongkong entwickelt hat, welche Fragen im Jahre der Ubergabe auftauchten und wie die Zukunft des Tourismus aussehen mag.
