Perry im Jahr 1853 und den daran anschliessenden Zusammenbruch des Bakufu war die neue japanische Regierung mit vielen Problemen konfrontiert. Zum einen ist die innenpolitische Situation zu nennen. Japan war innerhalb weniger Jahre von einem mittelalterlich-feudalistischen Staat gezwungener Weise zu einem modernen Staat geworden. Dadurch veranderten sich die Gesellschaftsstruktur, das politische System und naturlich die Aussenpolitik radikal. Der Hauptaspekt dieser Arbeit liegt auf dem letzteren Punkt. Es wird zu untersuchen sein, wie es Japan gelang, nach uber 200-jahriger Isolation in kurzer Zeit nicht nur auf die neue aussenpolitische Situation zu reagieren, sondern daruber hinaus das Wirken westlicher Diplomatie zu verstehen und fur die eigenen Zwecke zu nutzen. Ende der Meiji-Zeit war Japan die einzige nichtwestliche Grossmacht in Ostasien. Die Frage ist nun, wie man sich den imperialistischen Westmachten erwehren und gleichzeitig zu dieser Grossmachtstellung gelangen konnte. Historisch ist dies von grosser Bedeutung, da in der Meiji-Zeit die aussenpolitischen Grundlagen gelegt wurden, die letztlich in einen extremen Expansionismus fuhrten, der wiederum in letzter Konsequenz den Pazifikkrieg ausloste. In dieser Arbeit wird jedoch nur auf die Aussenpolitik der Meiji-Zeit, also vom Jahr 1868 bis 1911 eing
