This book explores the challenges facing food security, sustainability, sovereignty, and supply chains in the Arctic, with a specific focus on Indigenous Peoples. Offering multidisciplinary insights and with a particular focus on populations in the European High North region, the book highlights the importance of accessible and sustainable traditional foods for the dietary needs of local and Indigenous Peoples. It focuses on foods and natural products that are unique to this region and considers how they play a significant role towards food security and sovereignty. The book captures the tremendous complexity facing populations here as they strive to maintain sustainable food systems - both subsistent and commercial - and regain sovereignty over traditional food production policies. A range of issues are explored including food contamination risks, due to increasing human activities in the region, such as mining, to changing livelihoods and gender roles in the maintenance of traditional food security and sovereignty. The book also considers processing methods that combine indigenous and traditional knowledge to convert the traditional foods, that are harvested and hunted, into local foods. The Arctic-Barents Region is facing numerous pressures from a variety of sources, including the effect of environmental changes and extractive industrial developments. The threats arising out of these pressures result in human security challenges. This book analyses the formation, and promotion, of societal security within the context of the Arctic-Barents Region. It applies the human security framework, which has increasingly gained currency at the UN level since 1994 (UNDP), as a tool to provide answers to many questions that face the Barents population today. The study explores human security dimensions such as environmental security, economic security, health, food, water, energy, communities, political security and digital security in order to assess the current challenges that the Barents population experiences today or may encounter in the future. In doing so, the book develops a comprehensive analysis of vulnerabilities, challenges and needs in the Barents Region and provides recommendations for new strategies to tackle insecurity and improve the wellbeing of both indigenous and local communities. Photochromic molecules attract much attention because of their potential application to optoelectronic devices, such as optical memory media, photooptical switching and display. Here we have synthesized novel compounds dithia-dithienylethenophane derivatives and investigated photochromic performance in solution. Our main intention is restricted the rotation and fixation in a suitable position of dithia-dithienyl-ethenophane by using bridge chain and benzene ring for enhancement the photocyclization quantum yield. Dithia-dithienylethenophane is the first example of a dithienylethene bridged with a benzene ring. The dithia-dithienylethenophane derivatives exhibited photochromic properties upon irradiation with UV/VIS light. The distances between the reactive carbon atoms of the energy minimized structures of the open form were related to photocyclization quantum yields and those of ortho, meta and para isomers are 3.96 A, 4.26 A, 4.68 A and 0.51, 0.42, 0.11, respectively. The thermal stabilities of the ortho, meta and para isomer of dithia-dithienylethenophane were examined at 100oC in toluene and the both photoisomers of the ortho isomer were thermally stable."
