Differences in the linguistic behaviour of West and East Germans have so far been traced largely in the area of lexis. This study sets out to establish whether there are also linguistic differences of a communicative nature identifiable for their interactive relevance in encounters between Germans from East and West. The field of study explored here is the communicative genre of job interviews. On the empirical basis of 41 authentic interviews and also of role games, East/West differences and their consequences for the course taken by job interviews are examined with reference to three main areas: processing genre knowledge, responses to typical questions, strategies in dealing with differences in conversational style.

Die Arbeit untersucht Relativsatze im gesprochenen Deutsch in einem umfangreichen empirischen Corpus aus informellen und formellen Interaktionen und liefert eine umfassende grammatische Analyse eines zentralen Strukturphanomens der deutschen Sprache unter konsequenter Verwendung mundlicher Sprachdaten. Bei der Corpusanalyse, die sich durch die Kombination quantitativer und qualitativer Verfahren auszeichnet, werden prosodische, syntaktische, semantische und pragmatische Verhaltnisse berucksichtigt. Im ersten Teil wird der vorhandene Forschungsstand zum Relativsatz aufgearbeitet. Es wird u.a. gezeigt, dass die bisherigen Darstellungen, die fast ausschliesslich auf schriftsprachlichen Relativsatzen und auf Introspektion beruhen, in wesentlichen Punkten revidiert und erganzt werden mussen. Im zweiten Teil wird das Relativsatzcorpus im theoretischen Bezugsrahmen der Construction Grammar untersucht. Bei der Beschreibung einiger ausgewahlter Konstruktionen wird u.a. deutlich, dass zentrale relativische Konstruktionen im gesprochenen Deutsch trotz ihrer Haufigkeit in der Forschung bisher unberucksichtigt geblieben und in den Grammatiken ausgeblendet worden sind.
