Europe Confronts Terrorism examines the institutional, political,
security and reforms that have taken place in Europe since the
catastrophic terrorist attacks in the United States in 2001. The
tragic attacks in Madrid on 11 March 2004 - to date, the worst
terror attack on European soil - demonstrated that Europe was also
a target, and emphasized the necessity of decisively defeating the
al-Qa'ida organization, movement and network. Europe undertook a
number of reforms, not only as a response to the terror attacks, US
unilateralism and individual country concerns about becoming the
next target, but also as part of a process that had been underway
since the 1970s.
This book provides a unique historical perspective on expectations
in economic theory, and applications of expectations models in
economic history. Based on papers presented at the 2017 Thomas
Guggenheim Conference, it brings together the work of economists,
historians of economics, and economic historians on issues and
events concerning expectations in economics and economic history.
The contributions address: (i) the history of expectations models;
(ii) growth, expectations and political economy; (iii)
controversies regarding expectations methods and models; (iv)
expectations in theory and reality; and (v) expectations in
economic history. The book opens with a lecture by Thomas
Guggenheim Prize winner Duncan Foley on the evolution of
expectations in modern economic thought. The remaining content is
divided into two parts, the first of which focuses on the
utilization of expectations in the "ancient" and "meso" periods of
high theory, i.e., from Smithian to Keynesian approaches. The
papers cover topics such as "modern" applications of expectations
in both "Tobinesque-Phillips" and "Harrodian-Solowian" contexts,
and the debate between Friedmanite and Keynesian approaches to
expectation formation. In turn, the last part presents essays on
the role of economic expectations in connection with historical
events and contexts, ranging from the early 20th century to World
War II, and on the application of expectations theory to
hyperinflation and stabilization, taking Israel as a case study.
This book presents a collection of papers illustrating the variety
of "experimental" methodologies used to study voting. Experimental
methods include laboratory experiments in the tradition of
political psychology, laboratory experiments with monetary
incentives, in the economic tradition, survey experiments (varying
survey, question wording, framing or content), as well as various
kinds of field experimentation. Topics include the behavior of
voters (in particular turnout, vote choice, and strategic voting),
the behavior of parties and candidates, and the comparison of
electoral rules.
The book examines the various ways that fragile states (or states
with limited statehood) in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the
Americas have adopted, and adapted to, the processes of liberal
political governance in their quests to address the problem of
political fragility. It presents the stories of resilience in the
political adaptation to Western liberal conceptions of governance.
In addition to singular or comparative country case studies, this
project also examines the interplay of culture, identities, and
politics in the creation of people-centric governance reforms.
Towards these ends, this volume sheds light on weak states' often
constructive engagement in the promotion of state governance with a
variety of political conditions, adverse or otherwise; and their
ability to remain resilient despite the complex political,
sociocultural, and economic challenges affecting them. Through a
multidisciplinary approach, the authors aim to counter the
noticeable shortcomings in the discursive representations of
fragility, and to contribute a more balanced examination of the
narratives about and impact of political adaption and governance in
people's lives and experiences.
Since the end of the Cold War the United States has intervened militarily in a number of civil conflicts around the world, with varying degrees of success. This book examines four US-sponsored interventions (Panama, Somalia, Haiti and Bosnia), focusing on the vital nation-building efforts which have followed military action. The book seeks to provide a greater understanding of the successes and failures of US policy, to improve strategies for reconstruction, and to provide some insight into the conditions under which intervention and nation-building are likely to succeed.
Socio-legal studies have had an ambivalent relationship with the
'legal' - one of its defining aspects, but at the same time one
that the discipline has sought to transcend or even leave behind.
While socio-legal studies benefit hugely from the insights, methods
and theories of other social science and humanity disciplines, the
contributions to Exploring the 'Legal' in Socio-Legal Studies
illustrate the value of a focus on the 'legal'. The chapters in
this book combine traditional legal materials and analyses with
other ways of engaging empirically with the 'legal'. They
illustrate the rich potential of the 'legal' as a site both for
theoretical and methodological reflection and for case study
analysis. Taken as a whole, this volume demonstrates that
methodological discussion is most helpful when rooted in empirical
cases, and that the best case studies also help us to develop our
methodologies. Bringing methodology and empirical analysis together
offers an opportunity to reflect on socio-legal studies and develop
the discipline in productive new directions.
Today we are witnessing an increased use of data visualization in
society. Across domains such as work, education and the news,
various forms of graphs, charts and maps are used to explain,
convince and tell stories. In an era in which more and more data
are produced and circulated digitally, and digital tools make
visualization production increasingly accessible, it is important
to study the conditions under which such visual texts are
generated, disseminated and thought to be of societal benefit. This
book is a contribution to the multi-disciplined and multi-faceted
conversation concerning the forms, uses and roles of data
visualization in society. Do data visualizations do 'good' or
'bad'? Do they promote understanding and engagement, or do they do
ideological work, privileging certain views of the world over
others? The contributions in the book engage with these core
questions from a range of disciplinary perspectives.
In this in-depth ethnography, Karin van Nieuwkerk takes the
autobiographical narrative of Sayyid Henkish, a musician from a
long family tradition of wedding performers in Cairo, as a lens
through which to explore changing notions of masculinity in an
Egyptian community over the course of a single lifetime. Central to
Henkish's story is his own conception of manhood, which is closely
tied to the notion of ibn al-balad, the 'authentically Egyptian'
lower-middle class male, with all its associated values of
nobility, integrity, and toughness. How to embody these communal
ideals while providing for his family in the face of economic
hardship and the perceived moral ambiguities associated with his
work in the entertainment trade are key themes in his narrative.
Van Nieuwkerk situates his account within a growing body of
literature on gender that sees masculinity as a lived experience
that is constructed and embodied in specific social and historical
contexts. In doing so, she shows that the challenges faced by
Henkish are not limited to the world of entertainment and that his
story offers profound insights into socioeconomic and political
changes taking place in Egypt at large and the ways in which these
transformations impact and unsettle received notions of
masculinity.
Many critical theorists talk and write about the day after the
revolution, but few have actually participated in the constitution
of a revolutionary government. Emeritus Justice Albie Sachs was a
freedom fighter for most of his life. He then played a major role
in the negotiating committee for the new constitution of South
Africa, and was subsequently appointed to the new Constitutional
Court of South Africa. Therefore, the question of what it means to
make the transition from a freedom fighter to a participant in a
revolutionary government is not abstract, in Hegel's sense of the
word, it is an actual journey that Albie Sachs undertook. The
essays in this book raise the complex question of what it actually
means to make this transition without selling out to the demands of
realism. In addition, the preface written by Emeritus Justice Albie
Sachs and his interview with Drucilla Cornell and Karin van Marle,
further address key questions about revolution in the twentieth-
and twenty-first centuries: from armed struggle to the organization
of a nation state committed to ethical transformation in the name
of justice. Albie Sachs and transformation in South Africa: from
revolutionary activist to constitutional court judge illuminates
the theoretical and practical experiences of revolution and its
political aftermath. With first-hand accounts alongside academic
interrogation, this unique book will intrigue anyone interested in
the intersection of Law and Politics.
Ein neuer Stern am Lehrbuch-Himmel: "Organische Chemie" von
Clayden, Greeves, Warren - der ideale Begleiter fur alle
Chemiestudenten
logischer in seiner Prasentation. Drei Grundprinzipien kennzeichnen
Prinzipien. Umfangreiche Online-Materialien (in englischer Sprache)
Addition, deren Darstellung zuvor uber mehrere Kapitel verteilt

Ecodesign means integrating environmental factors into the design
process of all types of products, from toys, packaging, household
appliances to industrial products like compressors. It requires
life cycle thinking, with the environmental impact minimized at all
stages of the product cycle, from the extraction of raw materials
to end of use. Ecodesign is also a key to success in the transition
to a circular economy model. The ecodesign rules of thumb are a
guide to develop products that fit in the circular economy. This
unique book serves as a key guide for designers, organizations,
governments, companies, or anybody else with an interest in a
sustainable future, by addressing three main topics: First,
ecodesign is explained for what it is and how it fits with the
necessity for a sustainable planet. Second, ecodesign is shown to
be a coherent and practical process with a plan and tools that can
be used to provide solutions for the environmental challenges the
world faces. Third, the impact of the ecodesign approach is
elaborated for enterprises, governments, and consumers. Both
legislation and consumer pressure for more sustainable goods and
services require industry and academia to come up with meaningful
solutions that consider economic, societal, and environmental
aspects alike. This book provides the necessary clarity and tools
to assess current products and support and inspire design of new
ones to minimize the environmental impact and improve the
circularity.

"Enjoying religion" seems to be a contradiction because religion is
generally perceived as a serious or even suppressive phenomenon.
This volume is the first to study the increase of enjoying religion
systematically by presenting eleven new case studies, occurring on
four continents. The volume concludes that in our late modern
secular societies the enjoyment of religion or of its loose
elements is growing. In particular when scholars concentrate on
"lived religion" of ordinary people, the cheerful experiences
appear to prevail. Many people use pleasant (elements of) religion
to add meaning to their lives, to find spiritual fulfillment or a
way to salvation, and to experience belonging to a larger unity. At
the same time, diverse cultural dynamics of late modern society
such as popular culture, commercialization, re-enchantment, and
feminization influence this trend of enjoying religion. In spite of
secularization, playing with religion appears to be attractive.

From the Republican Party's "Southern Strategy" in the U.S. to the
rise of Le Pen's National Front in France, conservative politicians
in the last thirty years have capitalized on voters' resentment of
ethnic minorities to win votes and undermine government aid to the
poor. In this book, the authors construct a theoretical model to
calculate the effect of voters' attitudes about race and
immigration on political parties' stances on income distribution.
Drawing on empirical data from the U.S., Britain, Denmark, and
France, they use their model to show how parties choose their
platforms and compete for votes. They find that the Right is able
to push fiscal policies that hurt working and middle class citizens
by attracting voters who may be liberal on economic issues but who
hold conservative views on race or immigration. The authors
estimate that if all voters held non-racist views, liberal and
conservative parties alike would have proposed levels of
redistribution 10 to 20 percent higher than they did. Combining
historical analysis and empirical rigor with major theoretical
advances, the book yields fascinating insights into how politicians
exploit social issues to advance their economic agenda.
This handbook brings national and thematic case studies together to
examine a variety of populist politics from local and comparative
perspectives in the Asia Pacific. The chapters consider key and
cross cutting themes such as populism and nationalism, religion,
ethnicity and gender, as well as authoritarianism. They show how
populist politics alters the way governments mediate state-society
relations. The essays in this volume consider: — diverse
approaches in populist politics, for example, post-colonial,
strategic vs ideational, growth and redistribution, leadership
styles, and in what ways they are similar to, or different from,
populist discourses in Europe and the USA; —under what social,
political, economic and structural conditions populist politics has
emerged in the Asia-Pacific region; —national case studies drawn
from South and Southeast as well as the Pacific analyzing themes
such as media, religion, Islam, gender, medical populism,
corruption and cronyism, and inclusive vs exclusive forms of
populist politics; —modes and techniques of social and political
mobilization that populist politicians employ to influence people
and their impact on the way democracy is conceived and practiced in
the Asia Pacific. As a systematic account of populist ideologies,
strategies, leaders and trends in the Asia Pacific, this handbook
is essential reading for scholars of area studies, especially in
the Asia Pacific, politics and international relations, and
political and social theory.
