The European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and Advanced
Applications (ENUMATH) is a series of conferences held every two
years to provide a forum for discussion on recent aspects of
numerical mathematics and their applications. The ?rst ENUMATH
conference was held in Paris (1995), and the series continued by
the one in Heidelberg (1997), Jyvaskyla (1999), Ischia (2001),
Prague (2003), and Santiago de Compostela (2005). This volume
contains a selection of invited plenary lectures, papers presented
in minisymposia, and contributed papers of ENUMATH 2007, held in
Graz, Austria, September 10-14, 2007. We are happy that so many
people have shown their interest in this conference. In addition to
the ten invited presentations and the public lecture, we had more
than 240 talks in nine minisymposia and ?fty four sessions of
contributed talks, and about 316 participants from all over the
world, specially from Europe. A total of 98 contributions appear in
these proceedings. Topics include theoretical aspects of new
numerical techniques and algorithms, as well as to applications in
engineering and science. The book will be useful for a wide range
of readers, giving them an excellent overview of the most modern
methods, techniques, algorithms and results in numerical
mathematics, scienti?c computing and their applications. We would
like to thank all the participants for the attendance and for their

The international Conference on Optimal Control of Coupled Systems
of Partial Di?erential Equations was held at the Mathematisches
Forschungsinstitut Ob- wolfach (www.mfo.de) from April, 17 to 23,
2005. The scienti?c program included 30 talks coveringvarious
topics as controllability,feedback-control,optimality s- tems,
model-reduction techniques, analysis and optimal control of ?ow
problems and ?uid-structure interactions, as well as problems of
shape and topology op- mization. The applications discussed during
the conference range from the op- mization and control of quantum
mechanical systems, the design of piezo-electric acoustic
micro-mechanical devices, optimal control of crystal growth, the
control of bodies immersed into a ?uid to airfoil design and much
more. Thus the app- cations are across all time and length scales.
Optimization and control of systems governed by partial di?erential
eq- tions and more recently by variational inequalities is a very
active ?eld of research in Applied Mathematics, in particular in
numerical analysis, scienti?c comp- ing and optimization. In order
to able to handle real-world applications, scalable and
parallelizable algorithms have to be designed, implemented and
validated. This requires an in-depth understanding of both the
theoretical properties and the numerical realization of such
structural insights. Therefore, a 'core' devel- ment within the
?eld of optimization with PDE-constraints such as the analysis of
control-and-state-constrained problems, the role of obstacles,
multi-phases etc. and an interdisciplinary 'diagonal' bridging
regarding applications and numerical simulation are most important.
Optimal feedback control arises in different areas such as
aerospace engineering, chemical processing, resource economics,
etc. In this context, the application of dynamic programming
techniques leads to the solution of fully nonlinear
Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations. This book presents the state of
the art in the numerical approximation of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman
equations, including post-processing of Galerkin methods,
high-order methods, boundary treatment in semi-Lagrangian schemes,
reduced basis methods, comparison principles for viscosity
solutions, max-plus methods, and the numerical approximation of
Monge-Ampere equations. This book also features applications in the
simulation of adaptive controllers and the control of nonlinear
delay differential equations. Contents From a monotone
probabilistic scheme to a probabilistic max-plus algorithm for
solving Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations Improving policies for
Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations by postprocessing Viability
approach to simulation of an adaptive controller Galerkin
approximations for the optimal control of nonlinear delay
differential equations Efficient higher order time discretization
schemes for Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations based on diagonally
implicit symplectic Runge-Kutta methods Numerical solution of the
simple Monge-Ampere equation with nonconvex Dirichlet data on
nonconvex domains On the notion of boundary conditions in
comparison principles for viscosity solutions Boundary mesh
refinement for semi-Lagrangian schemes A reduced basis method for

Many mathematical models of physical, biological and social systems
involve partial differential equations (PDEs). The desire to
understand and influence these systems naturally leads to
considering problems of control and optimization. This book
presents important topics in the areas of control of PDEs and of
PDE-constrained optimization, covering the full spectrum from
analysis to numerical realization and applications. Leading
scientists address current topics such as non-smooth optimization,
Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellmann equations, issues in optimization and
control of stochastic partial differential equations, reduced-order
models and domain decomposition, discretization error estimates for
optimal control problems, and control of quantum-dynamical systems.
These contributions originate from the "International Workshop on
Control and Optimization of PDEs" in Mariatrost in October 2011.
This book is an excellent resource for students and researchers in
control or optimization of differential equations. Readers
interested in theory or in numerical algorithms will find this book
equally useful.
22 papers on control of nonlinear partial differential equations
highlight the area from a broad variety of viewpoints. They
comprise theoretical considerations such as optimality conditions,
relaxation, or stabilizability theorems, as well as the development
and evaluation of new algorithms. A significant part of the volume
is devoted to applications in engineering, continuum mechanics and
population biology.

This volume comprises the proceedings of the "3rd International
Conference on Distributed Parameter Systems" held at the
Chorherrenstift Vorau (Styria), July 6-12, 1986. The aim of the
meeting was to stimulate exchange of information between scientists
working in the field of distributed parameter systems. The papers
included in the proceedings present recent results and most of them
include a survey on the background of the problem. Main topics
considered in these papers are boundary control for hyperbolic
systems, linear-quadratic control problems, robustness,
stabilization, visco-elastic and flexible structures, hereditary
systems.
