prophetische Religion Israels ihre h chste Darstellung und
Vollendung in Jeremia und Deuterojesaja gefunden hatte, ist in
Israel der Grund zu einer neuen Stufe gelegt worden, die sich
sowohl von der volkst mlichen, als auch von der prophetischen
Religion deutlich unterscheidet, soviel sie auch von beiden in sich
aufgenommen hat. Das zeitweilige Nebeneinanderbestehen dieser
beiden Stufen hat f r uns die wertvolle Folge gehabt, dass wir das
prophetische Urteil ber die neue Phase nicht nur erschliessen m
ssen, sondern noch aus dem Munde Jeremias selber vernehmen k nnen.
Es lautet, wie wir gesehen haben ( 37), verwerfend. Die neue Phase,
welche im Deuteronomium sich ank ndigte, erschien dem Propheten
Jeremia als ein Hindernis der rechten Gotteserkenntnis und
Gottesverehrung und darum nicht als ein Fortschritt, der der Erf
llung des prophetischen Ideals n her f hrte. Gleichwohl hat diese
neue Phase bald den Prophetismus ganz abgel st und ihre Herrschaft
von da an im Judentum immer zu behaupten gewusst; denn die Aufnahme
und Vollendung der prophetischen Religion durch Jesus von Nazaret
hat nur eine Abzweigung zu Stande gebracht, und sobald auch
dieselbe, nicht bloss an innerer Bedeutung, das Judentum weit
berragte, hat sie das Judentum selber an dem Festhalten der mit dem
Deuteronomium betretenen Bahn nicht gehindert, noch in dem
Fortschreiten auf derselben stille gestellt. Der Mittelpunkt, um
den sich alles dreht, ist in der neuen Phase der Religion das
Gesetz; aber die Formen des Gesetzes waren zu eng, um den ganzen
Strom der Entwicklung in sich aufzunehmen und zu umfassen...
