In the years 1786 to 1790, Friedrich Maximilian Klinger wrote his three tragedies that adapt and modify classical stories. In particular the two "Medea" dramas, the originality of which was stressed by Klinger himself, mark an important point in the history of the literary interpretation of this figure from classical times through to the present day. This reprint presents the first edition of the plays and, in a variant apparatus, the deviations in the authorized editions published during Klinger's lifetime as well as information concerning the creation of the dramas.

Friedrich Maximilian Klinger's AGeschichte eines Teutschen der neusten ZeitA (The Tale of a German Contemporary) appeared in 1789 as the sixth volume of a planned cycle of 10 philosophical novels. It is an important testimony of the author's engagement with, and understanding of, the works of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and indicates his stance vis-A -vis the French Revolution. This reprint of the text is based on the first edition and is preceded by a detailed introduction discussing the genesis of the novel. A variant apparatus informs the reader of all changes to be found in later versions of the text authorised by Klinger.

In einem an Goethe gerichteten Brief vom 26. Mai 1814 schreibt Friedrich Maximilian Klinger (1752--1831), dass er 1790 "im Ganzen und im Einzeln" den Plan fur einen Zyklus von zehn philosophischen Romanen gefasst habe. Ein Jahr danach erscheint mit "Faust's Leben, Thaten und Hoellenfahrt" der erste Band der Dekade, und noch einmal wenige Monate spater sind die beiden ersten Bucher der von Klinger als Seitenstuck zu "Faust" bezeichneten "Geschichte Giafars des Barmeciden" abgeschlossen und werden 1792 separat veroeffentlicht. Der zweite Teil des "Giafar" (Bucher drei bis funf) entsteht 1793 und wird zusammen mit dem ersten 1794 publiziert. Klinger erzahlt in seinem Roman, wie Giafar, nachdem sein Vater das Opfer despotischer Willkur geworden ist, sich aufs Land zuruckzieht, dann aber zu der Einsicht gelangt, dass Freiheit allein im tatigen Leben und durch UEbernahme von Verantwortung erreichbar sei. Er verlasst sein Exil, um fortan bei Hof eine bedeutende Rolle zu spielen. Noch vor Abschluss des "Giafar", in dem sich auch Klingers Auseinandersetzung mit Kant spiegelt, vollendet er "Raphael de Aquillas", das zweite Seitenstuck zu "Faust". Obwohl die Trilogie, wie Wilhelm von Humboldt 1795 Schiller mitteilt, in Berlin "viel Larm" gemacht habe, wird "Giafar" von der Kritik wenig Beachtung geschenkt. Das Interesse an dem Roman ist indessen lebhaft genug, um den Verleger F.G. Jacobaer zu bewegen, 1798 eine >neue verbesserte und vermehrte< Auflage herauszubringen. Die letzte der von Klinger autorisierten Ausgaben erscheint 1816 im Rahmen der Werke-Edition. In dem vorliegenden Band, der auf den Erstdrucken von 1792 und 1794 basiert, informiert die >Einleitung< uber die Entstehungs- und UEberlieferungsgeschichte "Giafars", uber historische Quellen, literarische Einflusse und die Wirkung des Romans. Ein >Variantenapparat< bietet alle Veranderungen in den zu Klingers Lebzeiten publizierten Textzeugen.

Friedrich Maximilian Klinger's (1752-1831) tragedy "Die Zwillinge" (The Twins) is generally held to be one of the most important and dramatically successful stage plays of the Sturm und Drang period. Klinger's own high opinion of the play is reflected in the way he constantly reworked it throughout his life, with the result that there are a number of very different extant versions. This volume is first of all a parallel edition of the first version of 1776 and the reworking of 1792. Further it contains the manuscript variants from later revisions by Klinger and Karl Morgenstern, his authorized assistant, as well as those transcribed from the manuscript of the Hamburg performing version by Friedrich Ludwig Schroeder (1780). The variant apparatus gives access to all authorized versions and the Introduction provides detailed information on the genesis of the play and the history of its publication and reception.
