The latest in the series that includes best-selling That's Not in My American History Book and That's Not in My Science Book, this book brings geography to life exploring the "who" behind the discovery of various lands and the "what" behind how our world changes. From the earliest compass to today's handheld GPS systems, author Kate Kelly shows how people throughout time have navigated the world. She also rectifies the past by explaining why some people have gotten short shrift in geography books. (If Leif Eriksson's mom were alive, she would pre-order a copy of this book ) Kelly also explores "human geography," including such diverse subjects as how geography affects the spread of human disease and how the global marketplace is causing our world to shrink. While discovery of new lands may have been the most vital part of the world five hundred years ago, today preservation is key to maintaining the land we have. The last section of the book examines what we do to our world and what will happen if we fail at conservation. And don't forget about water our most important natural resource and seventy percent of our world's surface A chapter in this section is devoted to this vital substance.

The follow-on to the best-selling That's Not in My American History Book explains in everyday language both the ordinary and the bizarre technological marvels that we take for granted and the laws of nature that serve as the baseline for life on earth. Beginning with clear, concise, and entertaining descriptions of the important discoveries that form the basis of our scientific knowledge--Newtonian mechanics, Einstein's theory of relativity, evolution, and germ theory, to name a few--the book goes on to tell scientific stories that "are lost between the pages." These include the discovery of the periodic table of elements (and why it matters), the development of miracle drugs such as aspirin and penicillin, the invention of television, the prospects for earthquake prediction, and the genesis of the Internet. Whether it's a fascinating anecdote about the role of zebrafish as stand-in patients for humans or the history of the computer, That's Not in My Science Book will prove to be an engaging read for armchair scientists and students alike.

Kate Kelly, acclaimed journalist and author of Street Fighters, investigates the world of commodities traders When most of us think of the drama of global finance, we think of stocks and bonds. But commodities? Crude oil and soya beans? Copper and wheat? What could be more boring? That's exactly what the elite commodity traders want us to think. They don't seek the spotlight. They don't want to be as famous as Warren Buffett. Their astonishing wealth was created in obscurity, because they dwell in private companies or deep within large banks and corporations. But if the individuals in the commodities boom have gone unnoticed, their impact has not. Prices of raw materials have exploded. Are the big traders jacking up the cost of petrol, food, and essentials bought by people around the world? How did such immense power end up in the hands of a few? In this riveting book, Kate Kelly takes us inside the inner circle that affects so many things we all depend on. Following a trail from New York to London to Dubai, from hedgefunds and banks to brokers and regulators, she reveals the fullest ever picture of the men who gamble with our future every day.

The Alexander Technique is a long-established, accessible and highly effective way of learning to change and retrain postural and behavioural habits that cause unnecessary tension, stress and illness. Developed over a century ago by F.M. Alexander (who taught the technique to George Bernard Shaw, Henry Irving, Aldous Huxley and many others), the Alexander Technique is a form of conscious awareness and mindfulness avant la lettre. It has always been used principally by actors--though it has wide applications in other professions and in daily life. Kate Kelly has a lifetime's experience as an actor and Alexander teacher. In Before the Curtain Opens, she invites performers of all sorts to examine the everyday habits of standing, sitting, breathing, speaking and reacting that spill over, unseen, into their professional lives. Using her own experience, miniature case studies, humour and unfailingly gentle kindness, she shines a spotlight on our deepest-rooted habits. On every page she offers advice, tips, techniques and guidance to help actors and performers retrain themselves in everything they do in daily life--before the curtain opens.

This volume is one of a series of reports on the state of the budget and the economy that the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) issues each year. It satisfies the requirement of section 202(e) of the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974 that CBO submit to the Committees on the Budget periodic reports about fiscal policy and its baseline projections of the federal budget. In accordance with CBO's mandate to provide objective, impartial analysis, the report makes no recommendations. The economic projections were prepared by CBO's Macroeconomic Analysis Division. The revenue estimates were prepared by the agency's Tax Analysis Division, with assistance from the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation. The spending projections were prepared by CBO's Budget Analysis Division. The federal budget deficit-although starting to shrink-remains very large by historical standards. How much and how quickly the deficit declines will depend in part on how well the economy does over the next few years. Probably more critical, though, will be the fiscal policy choices made by lawmakers as they face the substantial changes to tax and spending policies that are slated to take effect within the next year under current law. The pace of the economic recovery has been slow since the recession ended in June 2009, and the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) expects that, under current laws governing taxes and spending, the economy will continue to grow at a sluggish pace over the next two years. That pace of growth partly reflects the dampening effect on economic activity from the higher tax rates and curbs on spending scheduled to occur this year and especially next. Although CBO projects that growth will pick up after 2013, the agency expects that the economy's output will remain below its potential until 2018 and that the unemployment rate will remain above 7 percent until 2015.

You Lucky Dog is an uplifting compilation of true stories about homeless dogs that somehow survived and thrived to become local or national celebrities. One such story features Bum, a steamship stowaway, who hops off a ship in San Diego in 1886 and makes the town his home. There's also Terry, the dog who played Toto in The Wizard of Oz, who was given away by his first owners who found him disobedient. Don't forget that famous Benji was a shelter dog before he became a star. The book also contains unforgettable stories about America's First Dogs (and a First Fish and a First Raccoon) to give a rounded view of our dogs' place in American history. Kate captures their very souls in moving descriptions of the devotion, loyalty and trust that not only changed the fortune of these very special dogs, but also the lives of their human caregivers.

The shocking fall of Bear Stearns in March 2008 set off a wave of global financial turmoil that continues to ripple. How could one of the oldest, most resilient firms on Wall Street go so far astray that it had to be sold at a fire sale price? How could the guys who ran Bear so aggressively miscalculate so completely?
In this vivid and dramatic narrative, Kate Kelly takes us inside Bearas walls during its final, frenzied 72 hours as an independent firm. Expanding with fresh detail from her acclaimed front- page series in "The Wall Street Journal," she captures every sight, sound, and smell of those three unbelievable days.
For decades, Bear had proudly recruited aP.S.Dsaa employees who were poor, smart, and had a deep desire to become rich. An elite family or Ivy League diploma didnat matter. Were you willing to do almost anything to make money for the firm? Were you tough enough to be a street fighter?
Bearas leaders were arrogant and didnat play nice. But their style had made them a fortune, and had helped Bear survive every crisis from the Great Depression to the dotcom bubble.
Yet as the subprime mortgage crisis began to brew, the firmas key executives descended into civil war. Kelly reveals fresh, never-before-told details about the moves that led to that brutal final weekend.
With a style as riveting as it is enlightening, "Street Fighters" is the definitive account of a once-great firmas demise, and the human folly that led to the worst financial crisis since the 1930s.
