One Girl Began entwines the stories of three women, separated by history but connected by the same building. For Ellen in 1909, it is a box factory where she finds work and a transformative circle of friendship when her family fall on hard times. For Frances in 1984, it is a derelict ruin, where she joins a group of squatters and is drawn into a coercive relationship. And for Amanda in 2020, it is a gentrified conversion, where she finds herself trapped in a tiny flat and grappling with new motherhood as the pandemic looms into view. Over the span of 111 years these three women will come to haunt one another backwards and forwards in time, each immersed in the ripples of the lives that came before, and each struggling with the same questions of who to be and how to live.

Eleanor, Richard and their two young daughters recently stretched themselves to the limit to buy their dream home, a four-bedroom Victorian townhouse in East London. But the cracks are already starting to show. Eleanor is unnerved by the eerie atmosphere in the house and becomes convinced it is making her ill. Whilst Richard remains preoccupied with Zoe, their mercurial twenty-seven-year-old lodger, Eleanor becomes determined to unravel the mystery of the house's previous owners - including Emily, whose name is written hundreds of times on the walls of the upstairs room.
This workbook is a guide for using The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous for people with dual disorders; those who have an addictive disorder and an emotional or mental problem. It is written by Kate Murray Brown who is a retired Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor in Tenneesee. After working for 21 years in private practice and in treatment centers, I created this workbook using the same methods and interventions for dual disorders that were helpful then, and continue to be helpful now. This workbook will help the client, their loved ones, counselors, and friends better understand the dynamics of dual disorders. Each step is written in language that is easy to understand. It addresses addiction and emotional or mental problems simultaneously. Each step has written exercises that clearly explain the meaning of the step and how it applies to the individual. It is written with care, humor, and encouragement. Thank you to Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. for giving me permission to reprint and adapt the Twelve Steps. contact me: [email protected]
