Banished - The New Social Control in Urban America (Hardcover): Katherine Beckett, Steve Herbert Banished - The New Social Control in Urban America (Hardcover)
Katherine Beckett, Steve Herbert
R2,720 Discovery Miles 27 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With urban poverty rising and affordable housing disappearing, the homeless and other "disorderly" people continue to occupy public space in many American cities. Concerned about the alleged ill effects their presence inflicts on property values and public safety, many cities have wholeheartedly embraced "zero-tolerance" or "broken window" policing efforts to clear the streets of unwanted people. Through an almost completely unnoticed set of practices, these people are banned from occupying certain spaces. Once zoned out, they are subject to arrest if they return-effectively banished from public places.
Banished is the first exploration of these new tactics that dramatically enhance the power of the police to monitor and arrest thousands of city dwellers. Drawing upon an extensive body of data, the authors chart the rise of banishment in Seattle, a city on the leading edge of this emerging trend, to establish how it works and explore its ramifications. They demonstrate that, although the practice allows police and public officials to appear responsive to concerns about urban disorder, it is a highly questionable policy: it is expensive, does not reduce crime, and does not address the underlying conditions that generate urban poverty. Moreover, interviews with the banished themselves reveal that exclusion makes their lives and their path to self-sufficiency immeasurably more difficult.
At a time when more and more cities and governments in the U.S. and Europe resort to the criminal justice system to solve complex social problems, Banished provides a vital and timely challenge to exclusionary strategies that diminish the life circumstances and rights of those it targets.

Drugs, Alcohol, and Social Problems (Hardcover, New): James D. Orcutt, David R. Rudy Drugs, Alcohol, and Social Problems (Hardcover, New)
James D. Orcutt, David R. Rudy; Contributions by Patricia A. Adler, Peter Adler, Richard Aniskiewicz, …
R3,166 Discovery Miles 31 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Drugs, Alcohol, and Social Problems, a collection edited James D. Orcutt and David R. Rudy, includes 14 clearly written articles that exemplify the best of sociological scholarship on drug and alcohol problems. The readings strike a balance between constructionist, epidemiological, and ethnographic approaches to the study of drinking, drug use, and related problems such as domestic violence, crime, and the spread of HIV/AIDS. A general introduction and five section introductions written especially for this volume highlight basic theoretical questions and analytical themes that run through the articles. In contrast to many books on problems of substance use, Drugs, Alcohol, and Social Problems devotes equal attention to drug- and alcohol-related issues. The volume is organized around important theoretical and research approaches to the sociology of social problems, making it suitable for adoption as a supplement in undergraduate courses on social problems as well as for more specialized undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of drug and alcohol studies.

Making Crime Pay - Law and Order in Contemporary American Politics (Paperback, Revised): Katherine Beckett Making Crime Pay - Law and Order in Contemporary American Politics (Paperback, Revised)
Katherine Beckett
R1,162 Discovery Miles 11 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book shows how politicians constructed crime-related problems in ways which imply the need to enhance punishment and control and, simultaneously, to 'end welfare as we know it'. By analysing the process by which these 'solutions' to the crime problem were legitimated and popularized, Beckett reveals the political nature of the campaign to 'get tough' and highlights the need for a more inclusive debate on crime and its solutions.
