Matthew A. M. Thomas, Emilee Rauschenberger, Katherine Crawford-Garrett
R1,252 Discovery Miles 12 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

*Winner, 2022 Outstanding Book Award from the Society of Professors of Education* *Winner, 2021 Book Award from the Globalization and Education SIG, Comparative and International Education Society* Examining Teach For All brings together research focused on Teach For All and its affiliate programmes to explore the organisation's impact on education around the world. Teach For All is an expanding global network of programmes in more than 50 countries that aim to radically transform education systems by recruiting talented graduates to teach for two years in under-resourced schools and developing them into lifelong advocates of reform. The volume offers nuanced insights into the interests and contexts shaping Teach For All and the challenges and possibilities inherent in broader efforts to enact education reform on a global scale. This volume is the first of its kind to present empirical research on the emergence and expansion of Teach For All programmes, which replicate and adapt the Teach For America model around the world. The volume traces the network's expansion from its initial launch in 2007 to its growing international presence, as chapters present new research from national contexts as diverse as Bangladesh, Lebanon, and Spain. Using evidence from a range of perspectives and research methodologies, the chapters collectively highlight the ways in which Teach For All and its affiliate programmes are working to alter educational landscapes worldwide. This book will be of great interest for scholars, educators, post-graduate students, and policymakers in the fields of comparative education, teacher education, education leadership, and education policy. It paves the way for future critical inquiry into this expanding global network as well as further investigations of educational change around the world.

Eunuchs and Castrati - Disability and Normativity in Early Modern Europe (Paperback): Katherine Crawford Eunuchs and Castrati - Disability and Normativity in Early Modern Europe (Paperback)
Katherine Crawford
R1,329 Discovery Miles 13 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Eunuchs and Castrati examines the enduring fascination among historians, literary critics, musicologists, and other scholars around the figure of the castrate. Specifically, the book asks what influence such fascination had on the development and delineation of modern ideas around sexuality and physical impairment. Ranging from Greco-Roman times to the twenty-first century, Katherine Crawford brings together travel accounts, diplomatic records, and fictional sources, as well as existing scholarship, to demonstrate how early modern interlocutors reacted to and depicted castrates. She reveals how medicine and law operated to maintain the privileges of bodily integrity and created and extended prejudice against those without it. In consequence, castrates were constructed as gender deviant, disabled social subjects and demarcated as inferior. Early modern cultural loci then reinforced these perceptions, encouraging an othering of castrates in public contexts. These extensive, almost obsessive accounts of appearance, social propensities, and gender characteristics of castrated men reveal the historical lineages of sexual stigma and hostility towards gender non-normative and physically impaired persons. For Crawford, they are the roots of sexual and physical prejudices that remain embedded in the western experience today.

Promising Pedagogies for Teacher Inquiry and Practice - Teaching Out Loud (Paperback): Katherine Crawford-Garrett, Damon R.... Promising Pedagogies for Teacher Inquiry and Practice - Teaching Out Loud (Paperback)
Katherine Crawford-Garrett, Damon R. Carbajal
R939 Discovery Miles 9 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on frameworks of teacher research and critical literacy, this volume documents the experiences of educators in New Mexico who participate in Teaching Out Loud-an intergenerational, professional development program that focuses on the creation and implementation of imaginative, critical curriculum with historically marginalized students. This text offers a set of conceptual tools and pedagogical practices for teacher educators and researchers seeking to advance teacher learning and leadership through the use of critical study groups rather than the more scripted professional development approaches that dominate mainstream educational settings. Specifically, this book uses the voices of a diverse set of teachers to demonstrate the role of teacher inquiry in shifting curriculum and advancing equity, even when faced with formidable circumstances like a global pandemic. The authors examine how participation in Teaching Out Loud helped teachers foster social-emotional learning, foreground issues of race and identity, build and sustain community, promote self-care, and center play within and against challenging local and global contexts. Book Features: Highlights the voices of teachers representing a range of diverse perspectives and experience levels. Explains classroom practices and approaches in detail. Examines the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Explicitly addresses critical issues like race and social justice. Focuses on the American Southwest.

The Sexual Culture of the French Renaissance (Hardcover): Katherine Crawford The Sexual Culture of the French Renaissance (Hardcover)
Katherine Crawford
R2,666 Discovery Miles 26 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When the French invaded Italy in 1494, they were shocked by the frank sexuality expressed in Italian cities. By 1600, the French were widely considered to be the most highly sexualized nation in Christendom. What caused this transformation? This book examines how, as Renaissance textual practices and new forms of knowledge rippled outward from Italy, the sexual landscape and French notions of masculinity, sexual agency, and procreation were fundamentally changed. Exploring the use of astrology, the infusion of Neoplatonism, the critique of Petrarchan love poetry, and the monarchy's sexual reputation, the book reveals that the French encountered conflicting ideas from abroad and from antiquity about the meanings and implications of sexual behavior. Intensely interested in cultural self-definition, humanists, poets, and political figures all contributed to the rapid alteration of sexual ideas to suit French cultural needs. The result was the vibrant sexual reputation that marks French culture to this day.

European Sexualities, 1400-1800 (Hardcover, New): Katherine Crawford European Sexualities, 1400-1800 (Hardcover, New)
Katherine Crawford
R2,146 Discovery Miles 21 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a major new survey of the social and cultural history of sexuality in early modern Europe. Within a frame that includes the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment, it weaves together statistical findings, discussions of changing sexual ideology, and evidence of belief structures regarding family, religion, science, crime, and deviance. While broad in overall scope and coverage, the transformations are framed to highlight the narrative of change over time within each domain. By emphasizing the interrelationship between practices and ideological change - in family form, religious organization, medical logic, legal structures, and notions of deviancy - Katherine Crawford's accessible survey reveals how these changes produced the conditions in which our modern notions of sexuality were developed. This book will be essential reading for students of early modern European history and the history of sexuality.

Perilous Performances - Gender and Regency in Early Modern France (Hardcover, New): Katherine Crawford Perilous Performances - Gender and Regency in Early Modern France (Hardcover, New)
Katherine Crawford
R2,736 Discovery Miles 27 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In a book addressing those interested in the transformation of monarchy into the modern state and in intersections of gender and political power, Katherine Crawford examines the roles of female regents in early modern France.

The reigns of child kings loosened the normative structure in which adult males headed the body politic, setting the stage for innovative claims to authority made on gendered terms. When assuming the regency, Catherine de Medicis presented herself as dutiful mother, devoted widow, and benign peacemaker, masking her political power. In subsequent regencies, Marie de Medicis and Anne of Austria developed strategies that naturalized a regendering of political structures. They succeeded so thoroughly that Philippe d'Orleans found that this rhetoric at first supported but ultimately undermined his authority. Regencies demonstrated that power did not necessarily work from the places, bodies, or genders in which it was presumed to reside.

While broadening the terms of monarchy, regencies involving complex negotiations among child kings, queen mothers, and royal uncles made clear that the state continued regardless of the king--a point not lost on the Revolutionaries or irrelevant to the fate of Marie-Antoinette.
