Presenting the latest findings in topics from across the
mathematical spectrum, this volume includes results in pure
mathematics along with a range of new advances and novel
applications to other fields such as probability, statistics,
biology, and computer science. All contributions feature authors
who attended the Association for Women in Mathematics Research

biennial conferences organized by the Association, attracted over
330 participants and showcased the research of women mathematicians
from academia, industry, and government.
The book draws from literary, psychological, and sociological
perspectives to discuss and to illustrate how these perspectives
contribute to instructional practices in Young Adult Literature.
The focus is on young adult identity development as it is
integrated into reading literature and contributing to the young
adult reader's personal growth. The suggestions for instruction
range from complete lessons to mini-lessons as well as to
student-developed lessons that encourage participation and
responsibility of the student in his/her own learning. There is a
section on integrating media, technology and literature in
instruction. And finally, a look at implications and applications
for assessment and curriculum.

Sustainable Lifeways addresses forces of conservatism and
innovation in societies dependent on the exploitation of aquatic
and other wild resources, agriculture, and specialized pastoralism.
The volume gathers specialists working in four areas of the world
with significant archaeological and paleoenvironmental databases:
West Asia, the American Southwest, East Africa, and Andean South
America, and contributing to research in three broad time scales:
long term (spanning millennia), medium term (archaeological time,
spanning centuries or a few thousand years), and recent
(ethnohistoric or ethnographic, spanning years or decades). By
bringing an archaeological eye to an examination of human response
to unpredictable environmental conditions, informed by an
understanding of contemporary traditional peoples, the contributors
to this volume develop a more detailed picture of how societies
perceive environmental risk, how they alter their behavior in the
face of changing conditions, and under what challenges the most
rapid and far-reaching changes in adaptation have taken place.
Sustainable Lifeways enhances our understanding of both the forces
of conservatism and innovation which may have been in play in major
transitions in the past, such as the development of complex
society, and the expansions of early empires. Studies present
examples of cattle herders in East Africa, hunter-gatherers and
pastoralists in the Levant, South American fisher/farmers, and
farmer/hunters of the U.S. Southwest. PMIRC, volume 3

Nothing is beyond Kristi Carmichael's disdain--her hippie high
school, her friend Jacob, her workaholic mom. Yet for all her
attitude and her mind-reading abilities, Kristi has a vulnerable
side. She can hear the thoughts of her fellow students, calling her
fat and gross. She's hot for Gusty Peterson, one of the most
popular guys in school, but of course, she's sure he thinks she is
disgusting. And she's still mad at her father, who walked out on
them two years ago. Soon, a school project brings her together with
Gusty, her father comes home and drops a bombshell, and a friend
comes out of the closet, and suddenly she is left doubting that she
can read people at all.
Bitingly funny but ultimately poignant and positive, this YA novel
is completely on the mark.
