...And a Poem contains 45 poems based on both the Old and New
Testaments of the Bible. The title for this book comes from the old
stereotypical formula preachers used to use for the structure of
their sermons: three points and a poem. I've never seen anyone who
can compose poetry as quickly as my wife, Kathy Mansfield, the
writer of this collection. On Sunday mornings at church, she has
her iPad and Moleskine journal in her lap. Her iPad displays a
Bible app that she uses to follow along with our pastor. In her
journal, she takes notes. All of the Bible poems in this book came
from Kathy's sermon notes, but she also writes on other subjects,
and some of those poems will be collected in a forthcoming volume.
Time stood still the night Kathy Mansfield received the call from
her son Nathanael notifying her of his deployment to Iraq. In
Inside-Outside War, author Kathy Mansfield shares the story of her
son's experiences in Iraq, beginning an insightful exploration of
real war and spiritual war. She delves into the doubts, fears, and
perplexities experienced by her son in the war zone and the
spiritual lessons she learned while waiting and praying at home.
As Nathanael fought a physical war, Mansfield observed life and
discovered there is another war being fought against an unseen
enemy. As humans, we fight a war against a deep dark enemy, an
enemy that wants our eternal soul. In Inside-Outside War, Mansfield
parallels her son's physical war experience with our spiritual war
battles.
Honest and self-disclosing, Inside-Outside War paints a picture
of the dualism of physical and spiritual warfare and the cost of
both. The gift of freedom once taken for granted is seen in a
different light when young men and women fight to defend it.
