Love, Daddy: Letters from My Father examines the complexities of father-and-son relationships through letters and photographs. Willie Morris wrote scores of letters to his only son, David Rae Morris, from the mid-1970s until Willie's death in 1999. From David Rae's perspective, his father was often emotionally disconnected and lived a peculiar lifestyle, often staying out carousing well into the night. But Willie Morris was an eloquent and accomplished writer and began to write his son long, loving, and supportive letters when David Rae was still in high school. An aspiring photographer, David Rae was confused and befuddled by his father's warring personalities and began photographing Willie using the camera as a buffer to protect him and his emotions. The collection begins in early 1976 and continues for more than twenty years as David Rae moved about the country, living in New York, Massachusetts, Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Minnesota, before finally settling in Louisiana. "All the while my father was writing to me I somehow managed to save his letters," David Rae wrote. "I left them in storage and in boxes and in piles of clutter on desks and in basements. They were kind, offering a love that he found difficult to express openly and directly. He simply was more comfortable communicating through letters." The letters cover topics ranging from writing, the weather, Willie's return to Mississippi in 1980, the Ole Miss football season, and local town gossip to the fleas on the dog to just life and how it's lived. Likewise, the photographs are portraits, documentary images of daily life, dinners, outings, and private moments. Together they narrate and illuminate the complexities of one family relationship, and how, for better or worse, that love endures the passage of time.

Her mother, Gloria, was a brainy knockout whose fierce wit could shock an audience into hilarity or silence. Her father was James Jones, the award-winning author of "From Here to Eternity" and other acclaimed novels of World War II . Kaylie Jones grew up amid such family friends as William Styron, Irwin Shaw, James Baldwin, and Willie Morris, and socialized with the likes of Truman Capote, Norman Mailer, and Kurt Vonnegut. When her father died from heart failure complicated by years of drinking, sixteen-year-old Kaylie was broken and lost, which in turn left her powerless to withstand her mother's withering barbs and shattering criticism, or to halt Gloria's further descent into the bottle--or that of her own.

"Lies My Mother Never Told Me" is a beautifully written tale of personal evolution, family secrets, second chances, and one determined woman's journey to find her own voice.

The Ice-Cream Headache - and Other Stories (Paperback, New edition): James Jones The Ice-Cream Headache - and Other Stories (Paperback, New edition)
James Jones; Introduction by Kaylie Jones

"From Here to Eternity "and "Thin Red Line," both wartime novels (and major motion pictures), established Jones as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th-century. For this first and only collection of his stories (out of print for more than 15 years), arranged chronologically, James Jones wrote, in addition to a general introduction, individual and very personal prefatory remarks that illuminate his development as a writer over 20 years, beginning in 1947. The 13 penetratingly sensitive, remarkably varied stories are about men, women, and children in circumstances ranging from war to marriage to childhood to courtship. Each story is distinguished by the classical simplicity, emotional resonance, and lasting impact that is the hallmark of the great short-story writer. Brand new introduction by the author's daughter, Kaylie Jones. The James Jones Literary Society will participate in the promotion of this book.

"Superbly realized stories . . . Personal, vigorous, meaningful."--"Library Journal"

"We feel the impact of Jones's vitality. He is masculine, uninhibited, not abashed by whatever he uncovers of human weakness and sexuality."--"Chicago Sun-Times"

"The thirteen stories are anything but dated . . . a compact social history of what it was like for Mr. Jones's generation to grow up, go to war, marry, and generally, to become people in America."--"The Nation"

James Jones (1921-1977) became internationally famous with his first novel, "From Here to Eternity," a classic portrayal of Army life in WWII, which won the National Book Award. Over the next 25 years, he wrote 10 more books, both fiction and non-fiction.

Kaylie Jones, daughter of James Jones, is the author of four novels, including "A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries "(also a major film) and "Celeste Ascending."

The inspiration for the Merchant Ivory film starring Kris Kristofferson and Barbara Hershey, "A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries" is a rich and poignant family story from the daughter of novelist James Jones. Back in print, this new edition includes an author's introduction reflecting on the process of developing a screenplay from her novel, as well as a previously unpublished chapter, "Mother's Day," that was left out of the original Bantam edition. Based on the author's early years in Paris with her famous father, "A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries" chronicles the growth of an extraordinary family. Previously the adored only child, Channe finds her world disrupted by the adoption of a French brother, Benoit. This inspired novel explores the complex, volatile relationships between a brother, a sister, a mother, and a father, as they confront their own experiences of orphanhood.
