Lizhen Ji, Peter Li, Kefeng Liu, Richard Schoen
R4,630 Discovery Miles 46 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Comprising volumes 28 and 29 of the ALM series, this outstanding collection presents all the survey papers of Shing-Tung Yau published to date (through 2013), each with Yau's own commentary. Among these are several papers not otherwise easily accessible. Also presented are several commentaries on Yau's work written by outstanding scholars from around the world especially for publication here. Shing-Tung Yau's work is mainly in differential geometry, and he is one of the originators of the broad subject of geometric analysis - in which he remains one of the most active participants. His contributions have had an influence on both physics and mathematics, and he has long been active at the interface between geometry and theoretical physics. His proof of the positive energy theorem in general relativity demonstrated - sixty years after its discovery - that Einstein's theory is consistent and stable. His proof of the Calabi conjecture allowed physicists - using Calabi-Yau compactification - to show that string theory is a viable candidate for a unified theory of nature. Calabi-Yau manifolds are part of the standard toolkit of string theorists today. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1982 and the Wolf Prize in 2010, and has received many other honors. The Selected Expository Works of Shing-Tung Yau with Commentary provides the reader with systematic commentary on all aspects of mathematics by a contemporary master. The reader can thereby see the world of mathematics through his particular perspective, and gain understanding of the motivation and evolution of mathematical ideas.

R1,518 Discovery Miles 15 180 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This work presents lectures from the important String Theory International Conference held in 2002 in Hangzhou, China. These include talks given by several mathematicians of particular prominence in the field, among them Stephen Hawking and Edward Witten. Interest in string theory is driven largely by the hope that it will evolve to be the ultimate 'Theory of Everything'. Work on string theory has led to advances in many branches of mathematics. This rapidly developing subject is one of the mainstream topics of mathematics in the 21st century. The current volume presents lectures from the important String Theory International Conference held in 2002 in Hangzhou, China. These include talks given by several mathematicians of particular prominence in the field, among them Stephen Hawking and Edward Witten.

Cohomology of Groups and Algebraic K-theory (Paperback, New ed.): Lizhen Ji, Kefeng Liu, Shing-Tung Yau Cohomology of Groups and Algebraic K-theory (Paperback, New ed.)
Lizhen Ji, Kefeng Liu, Shing-Tung Yau
R1,670 Discovery Miles 16 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cohomology of groups is a fundamental tool in many subjects of modern mathematics. One important generalized cohomology theory is the algebraic K-theory. Indeed, algebraic K-groups of rings are important invariants of the rings and have played important roles in algebra, topology, number theory, etc. This volume consists of expanded lecture notes from a 2007 seminar at Zhejiang University in China, at which several leading experts presented introductions, to and surveys of, many aspects of cohomology of groups and algebraic K-theory, along with their broad applications. Two foundational papers on algebraic K-theory by Daniel Quillen are also included. Table of Contents: On Crossed Product Rings with Twisted Involutions, Their Module Categories and L-Theory - Arthur Bartels and Wolfgang Luck; Deformation Spaces for Affine Crystallographic Groups - Oliver Baues; Lectures on the Cohomology of Groups - Kenneth S. Brown; A Brief Introduction to Algebraic K-Theory - Daniel R. Grayson; The Braid Groups of RP2 Satisfy the Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture - Daniel Juan-Pineda and Silvia Millan-Lopez; K-Theory, an Elementary Introduction - Max Karoubi ; Lectures on K-Theory - Max Karoubi; On the Farrell-Jones and Related Conjectures - Wolfgang Luck; Introduction to Controlled Topology and its Applications - Stratos Prassidis; Lecture Notes on K-Theory - Hourong Qin; Higher Algebraic K-Theory: I - Daniel Quillen; Finite Generation of the Groups Ki of Rings of Algebraic Integers - Daniel Quillen; A User's Guide to Continuously Controlled Algebra - David Rosenthal; Higher K-Theory of Algebraic Integers and the Cohomology of Arithmetic Groups - Christophe Soule (Notes by Marco Varisco).
