Reader in Gender Archaeology (Hardcover): Kelley Hays-Gilpin, David S Whitley Reader in Gender Archaeology (Hardcover)
Kelley Hays-Gilpin, David S Whitley
R4,504 Discovery Miles 45 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume in gender archaeology presents 19 articles which confront and illuminate issues of gender in prehistory. It considers the question of gender difference and whether it is natural or culturally constructed. The articles here, which draw on evidence from a wide range of geographic areas, aim to demonstrate how all archaeological investigation can benefit from an awareness of issues of gender. They also show how the long-term nature of archaeological research can inform the gender debate across the disciplines.;The book organizes this complex area into seven sections on key themes in gender archaeology: archaeological method and theory, human origins, division of labour, the social construction of gender, iconography and ideology, power and social hierarchies and new forms of archaeological narrative. It includes section introductions which outline the history of research on each topic and present the key points of each article. A balance of material which rewrites women into prehistory and articles which show how the concept of gender informs our understanding and interpretation of the past are also included.

Belief in the Past - Theoretical Approaches to the Archaeology of Religion (Hardcover, New): David S Whitley, Kelley Hays-Gilpin Belief in the Past - Theoretical Approaches to the Archaeology of Religion (Hardcover, New)
David S Whitley, Kelley Hays-Gilpin
R4,773 Discovery Miles 47 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Human actions are often deeply intertwined with religion and can be understood in a strictly religious context. Yet, many volumes and articles pertaining to discussions of religion in the archaeological past have focused primarily on the sociopolitical implications of such remains. The authors in this volume argue that while these interpretations certainly have a meaningful place in understanding the human past, they provide only part of the picture. Because strictly religious contexts have often been ignored, this has resulted in an incomplete assessment of religious behavior in the past. This volume considers exciting new directions for considering an archaeology of religion, offering examples from theory, tangible archaeological remains, and ethnography.

They also show how the long-term nature of archaeological research can inform the gender debate across the disciplines. The volume:

* presents a balance of material which rewrites women into prehistory, and articles which show how the concept of gender informs our understanding and interpretation of the past.

Ambiguous Images - Gender and Rock Art (Paperback): Kelley Hays-Gilpin Ambiguous Images - Gender and Rock Art (Paperback)
Kelley Hays-Gilpin
R1,516 Discovery Miles 15 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What does rock art say about gender and how can our understanding of gender shape the way that we view rock art? A significant contribution to the relatively unexplored field of gender in rock art, this volume contains a wealth of information for archaeologists, anthropologists, and art historians interested in past gender systems. Hays-Gilpin argues that art is at once a product of its physical and social environment and at the same time a tool of influence in shaping behavior and ideas within a society. Taking this stance, rock art is shown to be very often one of the strongest lines of evidence avaliable to scholars in understanding ritual practices, gender roles, and ideologicial constructs of prehistoric peoples. Subsequently issues of representation and the people who made these forms of art are also discussed.

Lightning Symbol and Snake Dance - Aby Warburg and Pueblo Art (Hardcover): Christine Chavez, Uwe Fleckner Lightning Symbol and Snake Dance - Aby Warburg and Pueblo Art (Hardcover)
Christine Chavez, Uwe Fleckner; Text written by Bruce Bernstein, Adam Duran, Lindsey Drury, …
R1,403 Discovery Miles 14 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The legacy of the art and cultural scientist Aby Warburg offers many subjects for reassessment. Almost unknown until now are the artifacts he collected on a journey through the southwest of the US in 1895/96 and donated to the Museum fur Voelkerkunde in Hamburg (today Museum am Rothenbaum). The results first unfolded in Warburg's famous lecture on the "snake ritual" of the Hopi (1923). Following Warburg's transdisciplinary approach, this publication examines his guiding principles in assembling his collection as well as his reading of Pueblo art and culture. It pays tribute to the works and their artistic significance and sheds light on the circumstances of acquisition in the sociopolitical environment of the Pueblo communities of the time. The contemporary fascination with the snake ritual is also a topic. Set against this are the previously neglected perspectives and strategies of Pueblo leaders to regain interpretive sovereignty over culturally sensitive content and imagery.

Religion in the Prehispanic Southwest (Hardcover): Christine S VanPool, Todd L VanPool, David A Phillips Religion in the Prehispanic Southwest (Hardcover)
Christine S VanPool, Todd L VanPool, David A Phillips; Contributions by David A Phillips, John Kantner, …
R4,122 Discovery Miles 41 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Religion was as central in the day-to-day lives of prehistoric southwestern people, just as it is in the lives of their descendants today. Examining the role of religion can help to explain architecture, pottery, agriculture, even commerce. But archaeologists have only recently developed the theoretical and methodological tools with which to study this topic. Religion in the Prehispanic Southwest marks the first book-length study of prehistoric religion in the region. Drawing on a rich array of empirical approaches, the contributors show the importance of understanding beliefs and ritual for a range of time periods and southwestern societies. For professional and avocational archaeologists, for religion scholars and students, Religion in the Prehispanic Southwest represents an important contribution.
