Justice My Ass! (Hardcover): Fred Kelly Grant Justice My Ass! (Hardcover)
Fred Kelly Grant
R669 Discovery Miles 6 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Justice My Ass " is a collection of trial experiences that provide insight into the criminal justice process. The stars on the "good side" are police officers, lawyers, and judges of varying degrees of ability and ethics; on the "dark side" are the evil and merely unfortunate offenders they pursue. Then, there are the colorful characters in between. The "good side" players struggle to do what is just, but often end up simply doing their jobs the best they can. Under severe stress, they find comic relief even in the worst possible situations.

The criminal justice system in America is dysfunctional. That became crystal clear during the chaos of the Baltimore riots that followed the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On April 4, 1968, Dr. King was shot down as he stood on the balcony outside his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.

Although not a how-to manual, "Justice My Ass " provides proven trial techniques that will help lawyers, young and old, improve their courtroom presence and avoid the dangers of over-zealous tactics.

Gender-based violence (GBV) can take many forms and have detrimental effects across generations and cultures. The triangulation of GBV, rurality and rural culture is a challenging and essential topic and this edited collection provides an innovative analysis of GBV in rural communities. Focusing on under-studied and/or oppressed groups such as immigrants and LGBT+ people, the book explores new theories on patterns of violence. Giving insights into GBV education and prevention, the text introduces community justice and victim advocacy approaches to tackling issues of GBV in rural areas. From policy review into actionable change, the editors examine best practices to positively affect the lives of survivors.

The Time Traveler's Apprentice is a young adult novel set in 12th century England. The novel is a story of adventure and mystery set against an authentic backdrop of medieval Britain. This workbook offers a history or language arts activity for each chapter of the book. Both book and workbook are designed to engage students in an interdisciplinary fashion, using language arts and social studies content and skills to guide students through the entire novel. Beyond learning about life in the Middle Ages, students will engage in research, note taking and graphic organizers, QAR activities, analyzing a primary source, short and extended answer, reading for content, predicting, summarizing, and questioning as just some of the activities designed for each chapter of the book. The book can stand alone as a young adult historical adventure, or be used in conjunction with the workbook for a more thorough and guided learning experience. This workbook can be used in a classroom setting, to support homeschool lessons, to build skills for a reluctant reader, or to enrich the reading experience of an advanced reader. Look for the YA novel, The Time Traveler's Apprentice as a companion to this workbook.

Simon Grant has an unlikely friend in Professor Moira Ananke, whom he met while visiting the museum where she works. One day, while looking through dusty bookshelves he comes upon a series of black, leather journals. He quickly becomes engrossed in reading her accounts of archaeological excavations: digging at Ramses' tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings in 1995, excavating ancient Indian cities at Harappa in 1986. His attention is drawn to a dozen more journals stretching along the bookcase: Field Notes from the Discovery of Tutankhamen's Tomb, 1922, Finding Troy, 1871, Work with Johannes Burkhardt, 1812. Simon glances toward his mentor who silently watches him take down several books and scan their pages. They are what they appear to be--her personal notes from excavations stretching back nearly 200 years. So begins Simon's introduction to time travel. Professor Ananke is a Master Time Traveler. She agrees to accept Simon as her apprentice, to teach him the secrets of time travel. After a few brief practice trips, Simon feels he is beginning to learn the tricks of this dangerous business. But one day, while photographing a mysterious medieval manuscript, he is grabbed and thrown through time under no control of his own. Simon lands, shaken and confused, in a medieval wood in Yorkshire, England. He is discovered by a young lady, Bryn Berengar, who involves him in a dangerous and suspenseful mystery tied to the murder of Thomas Becket. Their search for the manuscript that provides clues to the mystery exposes them to many dangers, including being poisoned by monk's hood, locked in a tower room with a corpse, and fighting a desperate knight with a secret to hide. They travel to Carlisle Castle to thwart a plot to overthrow King Henry II and Simon finds the fencing lessons he took at the local youth bureau take on great importance as he fights for his life. Perhaps most dangerous however, is the relationship he is developing with Bryn.
