John Dee - The Limits of the British Empire (Hardcover): Ken MacMillan, Jennifer Abeles John Dee - The Limits of the British Empire (Hardcover)
Ken MacMillan, Jennifer Abeles
R2,914 Discovery Miles 29 140 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

When it was discovered in 1976, John Dee's The Limits of the British Empire (1577-78) was quickly recognized as a seminal text in the history of English Atlantic discovery, settlement, and imperial ideology. Writing directly to Queen Elizabeth and drawing on ancient and contemporary history, geography, and law as his supporting evidence, Dee argued for the existence and recovery of a vast British Empire. This included much of the North Atlantic and North America, Ireland and Scotland, and even portions of Scandinavia and the Iberian Peninsula. King Arthur, Geoffrey of Monmouth, Robert the Bruce, Pope Alexander VI, Martin Frobisher, and the Emperor Justinian are just a few of the historical agents who help to make this treatise at once erudite, elegant, and effusive. Offered for the first time in print, this volume uses sources that will be of interest to scholars in history and historical geography, English and British studies, and legal and empire studies. The book shows that Dee was an important propagandist of empire, that English antiquarianism was used to practical purpose, and that the legal foundations of the empire were not based solely on the indigenous, common law. In making these claims, this study contributes directly to several debates about the ideological development of the British Empire, especially the work of David Armitage and Anthony Pagden.

Stories of True Crime in Tudor and Stuart England (Paperback, 2nd edition): Ken MacMillan Stories of True Crime in Tudor and Stuart England (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Ken MacMillan
R1,220 Discovery Miles 12 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written for students and based on over 15 years' worth of teaching, this book provides students with both a very accessible introduction to crime and punishment in early modern England and the necessary tools to encourage discussion and debate about some of the key sources from the period. An updated bibliography to include historiography from the last six years provides students with an entry point into further reading and knowledge for essays and seminars on popular courses on crime and justice in Tudor and Stuart England. The introduction has been revised and questions have been added to encourage more discussion about the sources and help students question the sources' historical context and decisions made by authors; this is perfect for students with little experience of primary sources from this period.

Sovereignty and Possession in the English New World - The Legal Foundations of Empire, 1576-1640 (Hardcover): Ken MacMillan Sovereignty and Possession in the English New World - The Legal Foundations of Empire, 1576-1640 (Hardcover)
Ken MacMillan
R2,659 Discovery Miles 26 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How did contemporary English and European notions of sovereignty, empire, law and state formation impact upon English methods of settlement and governance in the Americas? Using documents such as travel narratives, promotional literature, colonial charters, maps, diplomatic correspondence and state papers, Ken MacMillan offers a major new study of legal imperialism under Queen Elizabeth and the early Stuarts. He argues that the imperial centre had a legal and historical right and responsibility to supervise its colonial peripheries. By drawing on legal resources associated with Roman law and the law of nations, the crown and its agents ensured that English New World claims would gain recognition in the broader European community, thereby establishing legal foundations that would have an enduring impact on the British Empire. The book will appeal to scholars in imperial studies, English and American legal and constitutional history, foreign affairs and the history of international law.

The series of International Conferences on Logic for Programming, Artificial Intelligence and Reasoning (LPAR) is a forum where year after year, some of the most renowned researchers in the areas of logic, automated reasoning, computational logic, programming languages and their applications come to present cutting-edge results, to discuss advances in these fields and to exchange ideas in a scientifically emerging part of the world.
