Set in seventeenth-century England, at the height of the Great
Plague epidemic, To Be Damned is a traditional vampire tale in the
vein of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Christian Coleswitten is a priest's
apprentice, summoned from his thankless job of tending to those
dying of the plague by the lecherous Father Samuel Stemmons. In
seeking some holy artifact or relic which would ward off the
plague, Father Stemmons has chanced upon an oddity that at first
blush appears divine in nature. The small rural town of Manasseh
has not reported a single death from the plague - or a single death
at all - in over twenty years. Tasking Christian with traveling to
Manasseh and deducing the cause of the apparent stout health of its
residents, Father Stemmons appoints the Scot mercenary Cotton
Smith-Patton to act as his ward's bodyguard. Together, the two
encounter all manner of strange and diabolical characters before
their journey's horrific end. In the midst of an evil as old as
mankind, Christian unexpectedly encounters the seductive beauty,
Cassandra, who nightly stalks his dreams. Almost too late he
discovers the unholy secret that lies beyond the passion in her
eyes, and in his tortured soul comes to realize that she is among
those-To Be Damned.
Thirty-two days underground. No heat. No sunlight. 4 June 1938.
Nathaniel Kleitman and his research student make their way down the
seventy-one steps leading to the mouth of Mammoth Cave. They are
about to embark on one of the most intrepid and bizarre experiments
in medical history, one which will change our understanding of
sleep forever. Undisturbed by natural light, they will investigate
what happens when you overturn one of the fundamental rhythms of
the human body. Together, they enter the darkness. When Kleitman
first arrived in New York, a penniless twenty-year-old refugee, few
would have guessed that in just a few decades he would
revolutionise the field of sleep science. In Mapping the Darkness,
Kenneth Miller weaves science and history to tell the story of the
outsider scientists who took sleep science from the fringes to a
mainstream obsession. Reliving the spectacular experiments,
technological innovation, imaginative leaps and single-minded
commitment of these early pioneers, Miller provides a tantalising
glimpse into the most mysterious third of our lives. Â
John Stockwell directs this tense action drama documenting the
covert mission undertaken by a US Navy Seal team to capture or kill
Osama Bin Laden. After receiving intelligence that their quarry is
hiding out in a compound in Pakistan, the CIA mobilise crack US
Navy Seal Team 6 to train for a daring night-time raid. After
arriving at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, and being put through
punishingly intensive training for their mission, the team learn
that their target is Osama Bin Laden, codename: Geronimo. As they
set out on the deadliest mission of their lives, the unit must come
together in one final, all or nothing attempt to take down
America's most wanted terrorist.
