Robbin's Island (Hardcover): Kenneth Norris Robbin's Island (Hardcover)
Kenneth Norris
R694 Discovery Miles 6 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Being a native of North Carolina and living in a small coastal town opens up so many windows of opportunity. As the road sign says: Welcome to Savannah's Point. Whether you go back to the (1400's to 2000's) there's a lot to write about and tell the reader. Even tourists and visitors want to know about you. There is the Civil war, and the Revolutionary War. Many events have taken place throughout our community and yours. We hear about the Pirate Blackbeard and his acts of piracy and other ships sailing the seas. Coastal North Carolina is known as the graveyard of the Atlantic. Did Blackbeard participate in these events? Maybe, he sure is an infamous figure today. Our community church people are generous, helping with the needs of others. The old timers can educate you on certain subjects, and they should be given their time. One of the best places to go to find out about your town or community is your local newspaper. They have resources to help you find out about people and events that have helped shape your community and town. Sad to say but many of our stories have passed, along with the storytellers. I've learned in our community, about places, and events that I never knew existed, and a lot of it was by word of mouth. Still there are those literary searchers with pen and paper who hope to pick up that special treasure of a person, place, or thing to write about, something to share with you and me. This is just what I have written about, called Robbin's Island.

A History of Scottish Child Protection Law (Hardcover): Kenneth Norrie A History of Scottish Child Protection Law (Hardcover)
Kenneth Norrie
R3,558 Discovery Miles 35 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first comprehensive account of how the law and practice of child protection in Scotland has developed from its earliest origins to the present day, within the context of a changing world Key Features Places the Scottish juvenile court in worldwide perspective and explores why the juvenile court ideals remain central to the contemporary children's hearing system in Scotland, dealing with both child offenders and neglected and abused children. Gives detailed analysis of the legislation and explores the parliamentary debates surrounding Acts including the Children Act 1908, the Adoption of Children (Scotland) Act 1930, the Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Acts 1932 and 1937, the Children Act 1948, the Social Work (Scotland) Act 1968, the Children (Scotland) Act 1995 and the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 Preserves in accessible form many long-forgotten legal and social aims, cases and secondary legislation Kenneth Norrie traces the assumptions that underlay child protection law at particular periods of time and identifies the pressures for change - giving a clearer understanding of how and why the contemporary law is designed and operates as it does. Particular issues are traced in legislative detail, including court processes, the changing thresholds for state intervention, the increasing regulation of children's homes and foster care, the developing rules on corporal punishment and the earlier practice of compulsory emigration to the colonies of children removed from their parents. The transformation of adoption is also covered in comprehensive detail. In drawing out key themes and common threads, Norrie sets contemporary developments against their historical context and offers a fuller understanding of child protection law in Scotland.

The impact of libel law on the freedom of the press is a subject which interests not only practicing media lawyers, law students, and journalists, but also members of the general public who are keen to learn about any perceived threat to the freedom of the press. This book presents all those people with an accessible and jargon-free look at the impact of libel law on the media. It is based on research conducted by Professor Barendt and his collaborators which involved interviewing the editors of national newspapers, journalists, and their lawyers to discover the extent to which libel laws chill press freedom.
The authors, a distinguished group of highly respected academics, examine the present state of libel law (including the Neill reforms and the law in Scotland), and go on to explore the impact of libel law on national and regional newspapers, broadcasters, and book and periodical publishers. The result is a lively study which will appeal to journalists, lawyers, and informed members of the general public alike.

Egypt just before political eruption! Turns of the century in Africa's northeastern corner have been critical moments, ushering in overt popular activism in the hope of radical political redirection " -- as this volume's focus on Egypt's 19th-century fin-de-siecle demonstrates. This period witnessed crisscrossing and conflicting political currents as well as fluctuating economic, geopolitical, social and demographic conditions and cultural processes. Like Egypt's 20th-century fin-de-siecle, much of this ferment was a prelude to the more visible and politically eruptive events of the next decades, when Egypt's popular resistance burst onto the international scene. But its subterranean cast was no less dynamic for that."
