The Scottish poet Kenneth White and the Australian philosopher Jeff Malpas came together by chance when Malpas heard an interview with White on ABC radio. Malpas contacted White, and from there they exchanged books and ideas. They arranged to meet at White's place on the Breton coast, where a conversation about poetry and philosophy developed over four days. The political content of The Simpsons, the effects of that content on viewers, and the relationship between humor and public opinion have long been sources of curiosity. When America's favorite animated family first aired, conservative Republicans criticized The Simpsons as a corrupting influence, which caused some people to believe the show favors the political left. Scholars, critics, and fans have argued over the partisan content of the show and its effects on viewers for years with scant empirical data to guide the debate. This book speaks to this lack of evidence by addressing systematically the questions of partisan bias, the effects of the show on viewers, and how such effects compare to the effects of traditional situation comedy programming. Utilizing a content analysis, an experimental design, and a secondary analysis of national survey data in the United States, this book sheds light on the politics of The Simpsons and the role of humor in a democratic society in a way that should be especially useful to any fan of the Springfield universe.

Forty-three years after the publication of "Toward a More Responsible Two-Party System" in the "American Political Science Review, "John Kenneth White and Jerome M. Mileur place the "responsible parties" argument into historical perspective and assess its import over the last four decades for both the scholarly study of American political parties and the evaluation of American parties as democratic political institutions.

This book is the first systematic look at the "responsible parties" argument originally developed by E. E. Schattschneider and the Committee on Political Parties, a group sanctioned by the American Political Science Association. The contributors are among some of the most ardent fans of political parties, who view the party system, despite its continued decline, as potentially the most effective means of communication between voters and legislators. Yet, while each would like to see the resurgence of parties, most are pessimistic about the capacity of these institutions to assist in the governance of the country. Elections in which the party system fails to frame issues satisfactorily and the rise of an American state without the helping hand of parties to run it have contributed to a political crisis of confidence in government. How that crisis is resolved, and the fate that ultimately awaits the political parties, will shape much of American politics in the next century.
