Megacity development and the inherent risks and opportunities for humans and the environment is a theme of growing urgency in the 21st century. Focusing on Latin America where urbanization is most advanced, this book studies the complexity of a 'mega-urban system' and explores interrelations between sectors and issues by providing an in-depths study of one particular city, Santiago de Chile. The book attempts to (i) focus on the emergence of risk in megacities by analyzing risk elements, (ii) evaluate the extent and severity of risks, (iii) develop strategies to cope with adverse risks, and (iv) to guide urban development by combining concepts with empirical evidence. Drawing on the work of an interdisciplinary and international consortium of academic and professional partners, the book is written for scholars in cross-cutting areas of urban, sustainability, hazard, governance and planning research as well as practitioners from local, regional and international organizations.

The book concentrates on Latin America, where urbanization is most advanced. The content draws on interdisciplinary work carried out by a research consortium of the German Helmholtz Association, partners from Universities in Chile and Germany, the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and praxis partners. Dieses Open Access Buch thematisiert den Beitrag der Stadte zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung. Die Autor*innen stellen die Agenda 2030 und die 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) vor, auf die sich die Mitgliedstaaten der Vereinten Nationen im Jahr 2015 einigten. Sie zeigen auf, wie die Ziele kommunal umgesetzt werden und welche Herausforderungen sich dabei ergeben. Ansatze nachhaltiger Stadtentwicklung werden vorgestellt und nationale sowie internationale Beispiele verdeutlichen die Lokalisierung der SDGs. Dies wird erganzt durch Forschungsansatze zur Unterstutzung von Nachhaltigkeitstransformationen in gemeinsamer Arbeit von Wissenschaft und Praxis.

The book addresses urban transformations towards sustainability in light of challenges of global urbanization processes and the consequences of global environmental change. The aim is to show that urban transformations only succeed if both innovative scientific solutions and practice-oriented governance approaches are developed. This assumption is addressed by providing theoretical insights and empirical evidence pointing particularly at 3 concepts or qualities which are determined here as being central for achieving urban sustainability: resource efficiency, quality of life and resilience. Urban case studies from several international research projects illustrate our conceptual approach of urban transformations towards sustainable development. Thus, the book reaches far beyond a mere additive description of single case studies. It incorporates the results of condensed synthesis, resulting from comparisons and evaluations. It provides, based on cross-cutting reflection of single cases and different scales and methods of analysis, general and transferable findings. They do not only consider the scientific sphere but deliberately go beyond it discussing transferability of knowledge into practice, governance options and the feasibility of policy strategies in order to pave the way for sustainable urban transformations to happen today and in the future.
