This book, first published in 1991, moves beyond sensational
headlines to explore how Middle Eastern men and women speak and
feel about the societies in which they live. Kevin Dwyer makes use
of extensive research and interview material from Egypt, Tunisia
and Morocco and combines first-hand testimony with vivid and
illuminating analysis. The voices are those of lawyers, political
militants, religious thinkers, journalists and human rights
activists who focus their discussion on the question of human
rights and critical issues in social and cultural life.
The incredible real-life cases behind TV's hit crime drama Law
& Order: Special Victims Unit, including photos. The crimes,
the suspects, the trials-as they really went down. True Stories of
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit focuses on twenty-five of the
scandalous true crimes that real detectives have grappled with-the
facts behind the fictionalized stories on the phenomenally popular
TV show. Beyond the actual crimes, the entire criminal process is
covered: from investigation and arrest to trial and verdict. This
book reveals in-depth accounts of some of the most monstrous
offenses recreated on the hit series, including the gripping story
of a teenage love triangle that led to the murder of a young girl
and the deadly confrontation between the FBI and David Koresh's
cult that made national headlines. Stopping these criminals is only
the beginning. Confronting the deep psychological scars left on
their victims is the real challenge. This collection offers fans of
the show and those interested in crime-solving techniques a glimpse
of the real stories and real people behind some of the most
notable, notorious, and gut wrenching cases of sexually-based
crimes in recent history.
Encountering Morocco introduces readers to life in this North
African country through vivid accounts of fieldwork as personal
experience and intellectual journey. We meet the contributors at
diverse stages of their careers-from the unmarried researcher
arriving for her first stint in the field to the seasoned
fieldworker returning with spouse and children. They offer frank
descriptions of what it means to take up residence in a place where
one is regarded as an outsider, learn the language and local
customs, and struggle to develop rapport. Moving reflections on
friendship, kinship, and belief within the cross-cultural encounter
reveal why study of Moroccan society has played such a seminal role
in the development of cultural anthropology. -- Indiana University

In Beyond Casablanca, Kevin Dwyer explores the problems of
creativity in the Arab and African world, focusing on Moroccan
cinema and one of its key figures, filmmaker M. A. Tazi. Dwyer
develops three themes simultaneously: the filmmaker's career and
films; filmmaking in postcolonial Morocco; and the relationship
between Moroccan cinema. Third World and Arab cinema, and the
global film industry. This compelling discussion of Moroccan cinema
is founded upon decades of anthropological research in Morocco,
most recently on the Moroccan film sector and the global film
industry, and exhibits a sensitivity to the cultural, political,
social, and economic context of creative activity. The book centers
on a series of interviews conducted with Tazi, whose career
provides a rich commentary on the world of Moroccan cinema and on
Moroccan cinema in the world. The interviews are framed, variously,
by presentations of Moroccan history, society, and culture; the
role of foreign filmmakers in Morocco; thematic discussions of
cinematic issues (such as narrative techniques, the use of symbols,
film as an expression of identity, and problems of censorship); and
the global context of Third World filmmaking.
True Stories of Law & Order reveals the fascinating and
shocking facts behind 25 of the hit show's most popular episodes -
from the incredible account of how a woman's repressed memory leads
to the solving of a 30-year-old cold case to the high-profile
investigation of tranvestite millionaire Robert Durst. And just
like in Law & Order, the actual crime is just the beginning, as
you follow these cases from the initial stages of the investigation
through the trial and up to the often controversial verdicts.
Part of the reason millions of fans tune in to Law & Order
is the gritty realism of its storytelling. The monumentally popular
show has included many episodes inspired by actual cases ripped
from the headlines - true crimes that are often stranger and more
chilling than fiction.
