This book gathers the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Mechanical Engineering and Applied Composite Materials (MEACM), held in Beijing, China on October 24-25, 2020. The conference brought together researchers from several countries and covered all major areas of mechanical engineering and applied composite materials, new applications and current trends. The topics covered include: structure and design, mechanical manufacturing and automation, robotics and mechatronics, mechanical behavior of nanomaterials, nanocomposites, and composite mechanics. Given its scope, the book offers a source of information and inspiration for researchers seeking to improve their work and gather new ideas for future developments.
Advanced Bioceramics: Properties, Processing, and Applications describes development of bioceramics and biocomposites, which are used in bone tissue repair, remodelling, and regeneration. It covers the fundamental aspects of materials science and bioengineering, clinical performance in a variety of applications, ISO/ASTM specifications, and opportunities and challenges. • Offers a comprehensive view of properties and processing of bioceramics. • Highlights applications in dentistry, orthopaedic and maxillofacial implants, and regenerative and tissue engineering. • Covers ISO/ASTM specifications, such as processing, clinical applications, recycling/reuse, and disposal standards. • Explores health, environmental, and ethical issues. This book is aimed at researchers, practitioners, and advanced students in materials science and biomedical engineering and can assist in the design of novel, targeted, and personalized bioceramics-based treatments.
This book provides a simple and unified approach to the mechanics of discontinuous-fibre reinforced composites, and introduces readers as generally as possible to the key concepts regarding the mechanics of elastic stress transfer, intermediate modes of stress transfer, plastic stress transfer, fibre pull-out, fibre fragmentation and matrix rupture. These concepts are subsequently applied to progressive stages of the loading process, through to the composite fractures. The book offers a valuable guide for advanced undergraduate and graduate students attending lecture courses on fibre composites. It is also intended for beginning researchers who wish to develop deeper insights into how discontinuous fibre provides reinforcement to composites, and for engineers, particularly those who wish to apply the concepts presented here to design and develop discontinuous-fibre reinforced composites.

Sustainable Biopolymer Composites: Biocompatibility, Self-healing, Modeling, Repair and Recyclability focuses on sustainable polymer composites also referred to as bio- composites. Vital aspects such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, repair and recyclability are discussed in detail. In addition, complexities like rapid and scalable processing, onsite repair, and minimal environmental effects are also covered along with the appropriateness of advanced polymer composites for structural applications in automotive, aviation and marine industries. This book will be an indispensable resource for scientists, engineers, physicists and chemists who are interested in the preparation, applications and repair analysis of bio-based composites and nano-composites for different types of applications. The composites repair process is extremely complex, hence it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of damage mechanisms to apply the most suitable repair technique. Damage assessment using onsite inspection, e.g., NDT, THz techniques and the automated repair process for reliability and repeatability, are vital parameters when executing bonded composite repair. Furthermore, overall integrity and structural health monitoring of composites repair is also necessary.

Interfaces in Particle and Fibre-Reinforced Composites: From Macro- to Nanoscale addresses recent research findings on the particle-matrix interface at different length scales. The book's main focus is on the reinforcement of materials by particles that can result in a composite material of high stiffness and strength, but it also focuses on how the particle interacts with the (matrix) material, which may be a polymer, biological-based material, ceramic or conventional metal. The different types of particle reinforced composites are discussed, as is load transfer at the particle-matrix interface. Readers will learn how to select materials and about particle structure. Significant progress has been made in applying these approaches, thus making this book a timely piece on recent research findings on the particle-matrix interface at different length scales.
Bioresorbable Polymers and their Composites: Characterization and Fundamental Processing for Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Development provides a holistic view of these unique materials and their usage in a range of biomedical applications. The book is evenly divided between fundamentals, processing methods and modeling approaches, and includes detailed coverage of a variety of applications, such as drug delivery, medical devices and wound healing. Key aspects including biocompatibility, biodegradability and toxicology are also thoroughly covered, enabling the reader to be fully informed when fabricating and utilizing their selected bioresorbable polymer. This book is an interdisciplinary and important reference for researchers in the fields of materials science, biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical science and regenerative medicine, as well as R&D groups in the development of medical devices.
