From Antarctica’s biting katabatic gusts to Hawai‘i’s sweet-smelling moani, discover fourteen winds of the world through poetry, scientific facts, and transporting illustrations.
In a dynamic collection of poems, Melanie Crowder and Megan Benedict explore the world’s winds, from Italy’s swaggering maestro to Libya’s fierce ghibli to Canada’s howling squamish. The poetic styles used reflect the characteristics and sometimes the location of each wind: Japan’s blustery oroshi is celebrated in haiku, for example, while the poem about Britain’s helm uses iambs in a nod toward the iambic pentameter of English sonnets. Sidebars relay the science behind how each wind forms, where it blows, and the weather systems it heralds, and the airy art from award-winning illustrator Khoa Le is overlaid with scientifically accurate wind lines that show the path of each gust. More meteorological details can be found in the back matter, which includes explorations of the origin of wind and how winds are named, a world map pinning the winds’ locations, a glossary, and books for further reading.

"In moving, lyrical prose, the book celebrates the beauty and
sounds of each name alongside their culture of origin. The author
builds a strong case that everyone should embrace their names and
honor and learn those with which they may not be familiar."

and encourages them to feel confident in their cultural
identities."—School and Library Journal New York Times

ancestors: Hé Xiao-Guang from China Ofa Kivaha Tupoumalohi from
the South Pacific Bijan Hosseini from Iran Nizhoni Yazzie, who is
Navajo Xóchitl Luna from Mexico Akosua Acheampong from Ghana
Joanna Ho’s lyrical story explains how saying a person’s name
is the only way we can truly know another.

A young girl in modern times comes from India to live in America
with her extended family. She feels so alone-like she's not
wanted-and then remembers a story her mother once told her about a
group of Persians who were ousted from their country and who sailed
to the Western shores of India in search for a new home. The king
of the region in India did not want to let them in and explained
(using a glass of full milk) that the community was simply too full
to let them in. The king of the Persian refugees then dumped some
sugar into the milk, stirred until it dissolved, and explained to
the king that not only would his people integrate well into their
society but they would also help sweeten their culture. The Indian
king lets them in and they prosper. And, in the end, the young girl
realizes that she, too, is being accepted by those in her
neighborhood and that she can finally start feeling a part of this
new American society.
"A necessary addition to any collection on magic and witchcraft." -
Publisher's Weekly Human beings are incredibly complex. We are more
than just our happiness or sunny dispositions, and we have much to
offer others and ourselves even on our worst days. There is magic
and energy and potential in these moments-in the shadow-and we
cannot be the fullest expression of ourselves, at our most
powerful, unless we embrace and embody all that we are. Shadow
Magic is here to assist you in uncovering, understanding, and
celebrating your own shadow. Author Nikki Van De Car teaches us to
work with the shadow, rather than trying to suppress or ignore
it-allowing each of us to uncover the whole, integrated witch
within. Through foundational lessons on psychologist Carl Jung's
concept of the shadow; explorations of magical topics like the
moon, dream magic, and symbology; and rituals and spells for
connecting to your own deepest self, Shadow Magic invites all of us
to harness the shadow's power to bring more magic into our lives.
The spells and rituals in this book will help you bring awareness
and healing to whatever you may be carrying that you would rather
leave behind. As you do so, you'll uncover your personal power,
including abilities and gifts that you may not have recognized
within yourself. You'll work with sigil magic and symbology, with
tarot and candle magic, with the moon, and with dreams. Each
section includes three spells for you to try: one for creativity,
one for intuition, and one for self-love. And along the way you'll
encounter profiles of witches and women throughout history who
embraced their own shadows, even when it wasn't popular. Throughout
this book you will learn to embrace what it means to be in
relationship with your own shadow, in a process of growth and
exploration that will enhance all aspects of the self, allowing for
a fuller, more magical life.
Alan Watts, beloved for bringing a child like wonder to the
spiritual journey, once wrote a story for children. The Fish Who
Found the Sea brings this delightful and wise teaching parable to
life for a new generation. Presented with new art from
award-winning illustrator Khoa Le, here is a story as timely as it
is entertaining - sharing a key message about getting into harmony
with the flow of life. In this tale of a tail, kids will meet a
fish with a strangely familiar problem - he’s gotten himself so
mixed up that he spends all his time chasing himself in circles!
Only the Great Sea knows how to help our poor fish get out of the
mess he’s created with his own runaway thoughts. Here is a
parable that perfectly captures the wit and wisdom that has made
Alan Watts a timeless teacher we will never outgrow.
In this beautifully illustrated picture book, a child convinces her
father to put away his cell phone during a stroll through the
forest. She encourages him to walk slowly, inhaling the scents,
listening to the sounds, and feeling the rough bark of a log on
their palms and the cold water of a stream on their bare feet. The
story highlights the sweet relationship between the characters.
Lyrical companion text guides the reader through the mindful,
sensory experience of forest bathing. Forest Bath Right Down This
Path includes nonfiction back matter that gives readers details on
how and where to forest bathe. (You don’t have to be in a
forest—a local park or even on an apartment balcony with potted
plants yields benefits.) It also discusses the scientific evidence
for the health benefits of forest bathing.
Dreams. We all have them. Good and bad ones. Some may be as simple
as a dream about going to the mall with friends. But others can be
much more complicated. Do you ever wonder what your dreams really
mean? Is your subconscious trying to tell you something more? This
gorgeous book guides young readers as they learn to decipher the
deeper meanings behind some of their craziest dreams. With a
primary focus on friendship, family, and school-and how dreams
often reflect uncertainty in these areas of life-Dream On touches
on the areas most important to middle grade readers. The book
includes a list of some of the most common symbols and imagery in
dream interpretation. From falling or forgetting to turn in an
assignment to being lost in the woods, readers will be able to
examine their subconscious in a new, exciting way. The book also
includes overviews and sidebars that explore the fascinating
science behind REM-sleep and how our brains work during the various
cycles of sleep that lead to dreaming.

other. Can Beatrice help Roo love the dark as much as she does? Can
Roo help Beatrice love the light? Or are they simply too different
to get along? With lushly detailed artwork, award-winning
illustrator Khoa Le brings to vivid life acclaimed author April
Tucholke's heartwarming, slightly spooky tale about two very
different sisters who learn to celebrate their individuality,

A poetic and exquisitely illustrated tribute to the solar eclipse
and the magic of togetherness, seen through the eyes of a child.
What happens during a solar eclipse? The sun vanishes. Light
becomes dark. Day animals sleep, and night animals wake. The moon
takes over the sky. People stop what they're doing and together,
they look up. The whole world changes for a few beautiful minutes.
Celebrating a favorite wonder of the universe, A Few Beautiful
Minutes encourages young readers to (safely) discover each stage of
a solar eclipse, and to experience how this incredible phenomenon
can connect us to one another.
