This volume illuminates the relationship of China's radical past to its reformist present as China makes a way forward through very differently conceived and contested visions of the future. In the context of early twenty-first century problems and the failures of global capitalism, is China's history of revolutionary socialism an aberration that is soon to be forgotten, or can it serve as a resource for creating a more fully human and radically democratic China with implications for all of us? Ranging from the early years of China's revolutionary twentieth-century to the present, the essays collected here look at the past and present of China with a view toward better understanding the ideas, ideals, and people who have dared to imagine radical transformation of their worlds and to assess the conceptual, political, and social limitations of these visions and their implementations. The volume's chapters focus on these issues from a range of vantage points, representing a spectrum of current scholarship. The first half of the book brings new insights to understanding how early-twentieth century intellectuals interpreted ideas that allowed them to break with China's past and to envision new paths to a modern future. It treats of Chen Duxiu, a founder of the Communist party, Mao Zedong, and Mao in relation to the non-Communist Liang Shuming and with the Dalai Lama. With continuing threads of nation and nationalities, of peasants, utopias and dystopias linking the chapters, the book's second half looks broadly at the consequences of the implementations of radical ideas, at the same time critiquing our accepted frameworks of analysis. Moving up to the present, the book investigates the effects of the reforms since the 1980s on long-term environmental degradation and on the emergence of a capitalist rural economy. It gives an unsparing view into contemporary rural China through independent films. The book concludes with an analysis of the unshakable persistence of the shibboleth, "the rise of China," in popul

Structure and Regularity of Group Actions on One-Manifolds (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Sang Hyun Kim, Thomas Koberda Structure and Regularity of Group Actions on One-Manifolds (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Sang Hyun Kim, Thomas Koberda
R3,372 Discovery Miles 33 720 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents the theory of optimal and critical regularities of groups of diffeomorphisms, from the classical work of Denjoy and Herman, up through recent advances. Beginning with an investigation of regularity phenomena for single diffeomorphisms, the book goes on to describes a circle of ideas surrounding Filipkiewicz's Theorem, which recovers the smooth structure of a manifold from its full diffeomorphism group. Topics covered include the simplicity of homeomorphism groups, differentiability of continuous Lie group actions, smooth conjugation of diffeomorphism groups, and the reconstruction of spaces from group actions. Various classical and modern tools are developed for controlling the dynamics of general finitely generated group actions on one-dimensional manifolds, subject to regularity bounds, including material on Thompson's group F, nilpotent groups, right-angled Artin groups, chain groups, finitely generated groups with prescribed critical regularities, and applications to foliation theory and the study of mapping class groups. The book will be of interest to researchers in geometric group theory.

Kim Thomas, Shona McCann
R785 Discovery Miles 7 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Postnatal PTSD, often referred to as birth trauma, is an underdiagnosed and misunderstood condition. Often mistaken for postnatal depression and with 4% of women developing the condition after giving birth, it is essential that health professionals learn to recognise and prevent postnatal PTSD. The book supports professionals to better understand, recognise, treat and help prevent birth trauma. It covers the impact of postnatal PTSD on bonding and relationships, birth trauma in Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, how to support women having another baby and more. An accessible guide to supporting parents with postnatal PTSD, this book is essential reading for healthcare professionals and those involved with the birthing process.

Flexibility of Group Actions on the Circle (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019): Sang Hyun Kim, Thomas Koberda, Mahan Mj Flexibility of Group Actions on the Circle (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019)
Sang Hyun Kim, Thomas Koberda, Mahan Mj
R1,023 Discovery Miles 10 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this partly expository work, a framework is developed for building exotic circle actions of certain classical groups. The authors give general combination theorems for indiscrete isometry groups of hyperbolic space which apply to Fuchsian and limit groups. An abundance of integer-valued subadditive defect-one quasimorphisms on these groups follow as a corollary. The main classes of groups considered are limit and Fuchsian groups. Limit groups are shown to admit large collections of faithful actions on the circle with disjoint rotation spectra. For Fuchsian groups, further flexibility results are proved and the existence of non-geometric actions of free and surface groups is established. An account is given of the extant notions of semi-conjugacy, showing they are equivalent. This book is suitable for experts interested in flexibility of representations, and for non-experts wanting an introduction to group representations into circle homeomorphism groups.

Birth Trauma (Second Edition) - A guide for you, your friends and family to coping with post-traumatic stress disorder... Birth Trauma (Second Edition) - A guide for you, your friends and family to coping with post-traumatic stress disorder following birth (Paperback, 2nd New edition)
Kim Thomas
R522 Discovery Miles 5 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a second edition of a leading book on birth trauma, written by the CEO of the Birth Trauma Association, which has been revised and expanded to include new interviews and to take into account important changes in the law. Birth ought to be a joyful experience - for some women, however, it is anything but. Women who have experienced a difficult or traumatic birth may develop the debilitating symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): flashbacks, sleeplessness, nightmares and extreme anxiety. Also known as 'birth trauma', postnatal PTSD affects 30,000 women every year in the UK and can make daily life unbearable, damaging a woman's relationship with her partner, family and baby. This book explains everything you, your family and friends need to know about birth trauma: what causes it, how it affects your relationships, how to treat it, where to find support and how to make a complaint or take legal action. Using the stories of women who have suffered birth trauma and overcome it, this book shows that it is possible to go through birth trauma and come out the other side. This expanded second edition has been revised to include new interviews and to take into account important changes in the law. A percentage of all royalties is donated the Birth Trauma Association.

Kim Thomas
R515 Discovery Miles 5 150 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Birth ought to be a joyful experience: for some women, however, it is anything but. Women who have experienced a medical emergency during birth often find that the memory of it doesn't go away just because a healthy baby has been delivered. They experience the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder: flashbacks, sleeplessness, nightmares or extreme anxiety. Some go out of their way to avoid being reminded of the birth, and they may find it difficult to bond with their baby. Post-traumatic stress disorder after birth, known more simply as 'birth trauma', affects at least 10,000 women every year in England and Wales. Yet the condition is poorly misunderstood and women suffering from birth trauma often do not receive the treatment or support they need. They may be misdiagnosed as suffering from postnatal depression, and many find that friends and family, instead of being supportive, simply tell them to pull themselves together. This valuable and fascinating book by Kim Thomas, CEO of the Birth Trauma Association, explains everything you and your family and friends need to know about birth trauma: what causes it, how it affects your personal relationships, how to treat it and where to find support. Using the powerful personal stories of women who have suffered birth trauma and overcome it, this book shows that it is possible to go through this difficult experience and come out the other side. A percentage of all royalties is donated to the Birth Trauma Association. OUTSTANDING FEATURES: * Packed with information, expert advice and personal stories; * Offers practical help and support to women who have suffered birth trauma; * Easy-to-read, explains all jargon, and uses the stories of real women to illustrate the facts about birth trauma; * Includes a wealth of advice from a wide range of experts, including psychologists, midwives, lawyers and therapists; * Sympathetic and non-judgemental, this is a very valuable book for everyone affected by post-traumatic stress disorder and birth trauma. * A percentage of all royalties is donated to the Birth Trauma Association.

Women Preaching (Paperback, Limited ed.): Eunjoo Mary Kim Women Preaching (Paperback, Limited ed.)
Eunjoo Mary Kim; Foreword by Thomas H Troeger
R662 R591 Discovery Miles 5 910 Save R71 (11%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Considering the lack of resources that exists in the study of women's preaching, this book makes a very significant contribution to the development of homiletics because it joins together the history of women preachers with theological reflection. It is the author's hope that this book will provide a broader and deeper basis for the theology of preaching as well as practical ways in which preachers can improve their own preaching by looking at a woman's perspective. Kim gives a detailed account of women preachers from ancient times until the present--from women of the Western and Eastern churches to women of Asian and Latin American churches--showing the perspectives and insights that increase and enhance out understanding of who God is and what God is doing as well as the implications for preaching now and in the future. Women Preaching is a call to the church to accept women preachers as a matter of justice and a theological necessity.

Choice Models in Marketing examines recent developments in the modeling of choice for marketing and reviews a large stream of research currently being developed by both quantitative and qualitative researches in marketing. Choice in marketing differs from other domains in that the choice context is typically very complex, and researchers' desire knowledge of the variables that ultimately lead to demand in marketplace. The marketing choice context is characterized by many choice alternatives. The aim of Choice Models in Marketing is to lay out the foundations of choice models and discuss recent advances. The authors focus on aspects of choice that can be quantitatively modeled and consider models related to a process of constrained utility maximization. By reviewing the basics of choice modeling and pointing to new developments, Choice Models in Marketing provides a platform for future research.

The International Relations of Northeast Asia (Paperback, New): Samuel S Kim The International Relations of Northeast Asia (Paperback, New)
Samuel S Kim; Contributions by Thomas Berger, Kent E. Calder, Lowell Dittmer, William W. Grimes, …
R1,616 Discovery Miles 16 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Is Northeast Asia primed for peace or ripe for great-power rivalry? In this turbulent region, all the world-order challenges of arms control and disarmament, global North-South tensions, human rights and humanitarian intervention, environmental protection and eco-development, and democratization and humane governance are concentrated. More than any other part of the world, the divided Korean peninsula is the strategic crossroad where the four major regional/global powers-the United States, Russia, China, and Japan-uneasily interact. This authoritative work explores the complex and evolving interplay of national, regional, and global forces influencing Northeast Asia's security, economy, and identity. Written by a team of leading scholars, the book presents a variety of theoretical perspectives and case studies to offer a comprehensive analysis of the pressures that shape the policy choices of China, Russia, Japan, the United States, North and South Korea, and Taiwan. The authors' historically and culturally informed narratives help track and explain the changes and continuities of relationships within the region and with the United States and Russia. Concise and current, this book will be essential reading for all those concerned with the role of a changing Northeast Asia in world politics.
