This open access book is one of the first academic works to comprehensively analyse the dilemma concerning global content governance on social media. To date, no single human rights standard exists across all social media platforms, allowing private companies to set their own rules, values and parameters. On the one hand, this normative autonomy raises serious concerns, primarily around whether companies should be permitted to establish the rules governing free speech online. On the other hand, if social media platforms simply adopted international law standards, they would be compelled to operate a choice on which model to follow, and put in place mechanisms to uphold these general standards. This book examines this topic from a multidisciplinary perspective, drawing from the expertise of the authors in law, political science and communication studies. It provides a carefully reconstructed theory of the content governance dilemma, as well as pragmatic solutions for companies and policymakers. In this way, the book not only benefits academics by advancing the debate on content moderation issues, but also informs new policies and regulatory strategies by offering an up-to-date overview of rules and tools for content moderation, as well as an evaluation of their current level of compliance with standards emerged in international human rights law and digital constitutionalism initiatives.

Discussing Conflict in Ethiopia - Conflict Management and Resolution (Paperback): Wolbert G.C. Smidt, Abraham Kinfe Discussing Conflict in Ethiopia - Conflict Management and Resolution (Paperback)
Wolbert G.C. Smidt, Abraham Kinfe
R851 Discovery Miles 8 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume contains the papers presented at the Conference 'Ethiopian and German Contributions to Conflict Management and Resolution' of November 2005, Addis Ababa. The aim of this conference was to bring researchers and those working in the practical field of conflict resolution together, before the background of renewed internal and international conflict. Research in conflict resolution mechanisms is one of the most hopeful fields in modern social sciences. Local conflicts can have devastating effects on the state and even involve the international level. In turn, international conflict can also destabilize society and create new local conflicts. However, local conflict resolution mechanisms could be of a great importance even within the international scene. This volumes examines the experiences in Ethiopia and the impact the acquired knowledge could have for future conflict resolution and management.

Privacy and the Role of International Law in the Digital Age (Hardcover): Kinfe Yilma Privacy and the Role of International Law in the Digital Age (Hardcover)

This book examines the role of international law in securing privacy and data protection in the digital age. Driven mainly by the transnational nature of privacy threats involving private actors as well as States, calls are increasingly made for an international privacy framework to meet these challenges. Mapped against a flurry of global privacy initiatives, the book provides the first comprehensive analysis of the extent to which and whether international law attends to the complexities of upholding digital privacy. The book starts by exploring boundaries of international privacy law in upholding privacy and data protection in the digital ecosystem where threats to privacy are increasingly transnational, sophisticated and privatized. It then explores the potential of global privacy initiatives, namely Internet bills of rights, universalization of regional systems of data privacy protection, and the multi-level privacy discourse at the United Nations, in reimagining the normative contours of international privacy law. Having shown limitations of global privacy initiatives, the book proposes a pragmatic approach that could make international privacy law better-equipped in the digital age.

Today's global economy increasingly places a premium on knowledge-based skills and attitudes. In the 21st Century, Africans will have greater opportunities to earn income, advocate policies, and increase their social capital when they have access to education. In Africa, the links between females' education and sustaining the development process are proven and strong. The objective of this study was to identify the key variables that affect the participation of females in the educational system of Africa by taking Tigray, Ethiopia as a case and then recommend appropriate solutions for minimizing the gender gap in the shortest possible time. A total of 1970 randomly selected individuals participated in the study by giving their views on how the participation of females in Africa in general and Tigray, Ethiopia in particular can be enhanced. The research has shown us that eradication of poverty and injustice will simply not be possible without ensuring the participation of females in the educational system. Results also show that gender equality can be ensured at all levels of education of Tigray, Ethiopia within twenty-five years time.
