This rare 10th anniversary edition (published in 2007) contains a
new introduction by expert Soviet historian David M. Glantz. In
addition all maps and graphics have been enhanced from the 1996
edition. "When the Soviet Union decided to invade Afghanistan, they
evaluated their chances for success upon their experiences in East
Germany, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Unfortunately for their
soldiers, as well as the people of Afghanistan, they ignored not
only the experiences of the British in the same region, but also
their own experience with the Basmachi resistance fighters in
Central Asia from 1918-1933. Consequently, in Afghanistan the
Soviet army found its tactics inadequate to meet the challenges
posed by the difficult terrain and the highly motivated mujahideen
freedom fighters. To capture the lessons their tactical leaders
learned in Afghanistan and to explain the change in tactics that
followed, the Frunze Military Academy compiled this book for their
command and general staff combat arms officers. The lessons are
valuable not just for Russian officers, but for the tactical
training of platoon, company and battalion leaders of any nation
likely to engage in conflicts involving civil war, guerrilla forces
and rough terrain. This is a book dealing with the starkest
features of the unforgiving landscape of tactical combat:
casualties and death, adaptation, and survival." (From the original
foreword by Hans Binnendijk, 1996)
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COP AND KEVIN MAHER? KEVIN DOESN'T
HAVE A BADGE. AND HE DOESN'T PLAY BY THE RULES.
"Cop Without a Badge" tracks confidential informant Kevin Maher as
he helps the NYPD, the FBI, and many other law enforcement agencies
solve cases that range from robbery to extortion to homicide. In
the process, Kevin becomes the highest paid CI the DEA ever had.
But Kevin's motives are more complicated than simply money. Having
been arrested for Grand Theft Auto at the age of sixteen, his
felony conviction prevents him from being what he always wanted to
be: a police officer. So now he's out to prove to himself he truly
is what he could've been. A cop. Even without a badge.

BOOK SUMMARY AND EXCERPTS Our Spiritual Destiny: Manifesting New
Bodies discusses the ways that evolutionary forces are continuing
to unfold through all gradations of life. It explains the purpose
of human life as the expansion of Consciousness in matter through
ongoing body development. We have the choice to fulfill this
purpose consciously at an accelerated pace by changing and raising
the matter of our bodies to a level of our divine essence.
Utilizing the capacities of our Higher Selves within an initiatory
framework of growth and transmutation, we can actively participate
in our body development, thereby helping to expedite the
manifestation of new bodies.
As remote work has become routine, cloud-based technology tools
have become increasingly necessary to communicate with other
library staff and with faculty and staff to continue providing
seamless and uninterrupted access to library resources and
collections for our campus community. Cloud-based technology tools
such as Google Forms and Google Sheets are used to gather faculty
requests for collection development, tools such as Tableau are used
to illustrate material budget balances, and platforms such as
Trello have been adopted to track subscription renewal cycles and
manage other projects. This guide discusses the benefits of using
these powerful cloud-based and little to no additional cost
technology tools through the lens of a particular area in
librarianship such as documentation, data and project management,
communication, data storage, and data visualization. While the
real-world examples provided throughout focus on technical services
staff operations, specifically acquisitions and electronic
collection management, each tool's features and use cases are
transferable among all areas of librarianship. This guide provides
insights into how collaborative, dynamic, and accessible these
cloud-based solutions are for a technologically shifting workplace
as well as considers the challenges to adopting cloud-based
solutions such as administrative buy-in, aversion to change, and
steeper learning curves as well. Readers will gain practical
experiential examples that have been instrumental in creating
efficiencies in collection management workflows for technical
services staff. The use cases illustrated exemplify enhancements
that librarians can incorporate into their own collection
management practices to further engage with their colleagues, their
patrons, and their larger communities more effectively and
efficiently.
Whether in schoolrooms or kitchens, state houses or church pulpits,
women have always been historians. Although few participated in the
academic study of history until the mid-twentieth century, women
functioned as primary translators and teachers, offering
explanations, allegories, and scholastic narrations of the past.
Though often lesser known that white women in the historical
literature, black women wrote textbooks, pedagogical polemics,
popular poems, and sermons assessing ancient Ethiopia, contemporary
Liberia, the role of the female historian, and the future of the
black race.
This anthology aims to bring together approximately sixteen
writings by African-American women between 1832 and 1920, the
period when they began to write for American audiences and to use
history to comment on political and social issues of the day. The
pieces are by more familiar nineteenth-century writers in black
America--like Maria Stewart, Francis E. W. Harper, and Alice
Dunbar-Nelson--as well as lesser-known mothers and teachers whose
participation in their local educational systems thrust them into
national intellectual conversations. Each piece will have a
headnote providing biographical information about its author as
well as contextual information about its publication and the topic
being discussed. The volume will contain a substantial introduction
to the overall enterprise of black women's historical writings.
Because the editors are both trained in American Studies and
religious history, their introduction will particularly highlight
religious themes and venues in which these writings were presented.
This book should appeal to general readers of books like those in
the Schomburg Libraryseries, as well as those who work and teach
American history, African American studies, womens studies,
American literature, and American religious history.
This book brings together leading international psychoanalysts to
discuss what psychoanalysis can offer to people who have
experienced trauma, flight, and migration. The four parts of the
book cover several elements of this work, including psychoanalytic
projects beyond the couch, and collaboration with the UN. Each
chapter presents an example of the applications of psychoanalysis
with a specific group or in a particular context, from working with
refugees in China to understanding the experiences of women who
have witnessed political violence in Peru. Psychoanalytic work with
Trauma, Flight and Migration provides a compelling exploration of
the international contributions made by psychoanalysis. This
innovative book will be essential reading for psychoanalysts and
psychoanalytic psychotherapists looking to learn more about working
with people who have experienced the impact of traumatic movement
or migration.

What are the key factors that will shape the post-Soviet military
system? Leading experts assess the geostrategic context in which
leaders must operate, the nature of future war, foundations of
military power, dilemmas confronting a multinational military
force, problems in managing a nuclear arsenal, civil-military
relations, economic priorities and problems, and ethnic questions.
This current evaluation of how war and the Soviet Union are being
transformed is an invaluable study for students and experts in
military studies, political science, and the social sciences
generally. In this collection of important perspectives, Soviet
military elites and influential civilian policymakers discussed
what previous and present developments will require in the future.
This collaborative effort examines what Moscow sees as important
requirements. The study analyzes Soviet forecasting methodologies,
naval developments, views about theater warfare in Europe,
developments in C3I, the role of space, the Soviet military
economy, mobilization regimes, Soviet views on American military
thought, perspectives on the initial period of warfare and changes
in operational arts. Chapter endnotes and reference lists point to
major sources of Soviet scholarship.
This book, first published in 1993, examines the security concerns
of the Central European countries in the immediate aftermath of the
Cold War. The collapse of the Soviet Union brought considerable
uncertainty and instability to its satellite states, now free from
Moscow's influence. This collection of essays by leading Central
European experts analyses the problems and difficulties faced by
these countries, as well as the opportunities offered in forging
new security doctrines and alliances.
This important book provides a bridge between psychoanalytic
perspectives and socio-cultural issues to shine a spotlight on the
experiences of women in India today. Women's well-being and
security has often depended upon their gender positioning while
other binaries like rural-urban, class, and caste have also played
a crucial role globally and especially in India. Historically,
women have been subjected to various forms of oppression that
include sex selective abortions, domestic violence, bride burning
for dowry, and acid attacks. Threats to women's security have
recently increased with progressive polarization and hardening of
socio-political and cultural ideologies. This book assesses how
women's lives are impacted by these social and cultural conventions
and stigma, including ideas around motherhood, religion, intimacy
and femininity itself, and the psychological implications these
have. Topics include the seduction of religion, motherhood in
contemporary times, intimacy and violence, and fundamentalist
states of mind in the clinical space. While the book echoes a
regional specificity, it simultaneously resonates a backdrop of
global change of affairs that has its impact on ideological freedom
and the concept of inclusivity in terms of gender, race, culture,
and politics across the world. For this comprehensive perspective,
the effort is to create a platform of authors comprising
psychoanalysts, social scientists, scholars from the liberal arts
discipline, as well as social activists. In a country where women
have been historically subjected to both psychological and physical
oppression, this timely and original book will interest a range of
scholars interested in gender, mental health and contemporary
Indian society, as well as clinicians in the field.

Emergency Incident Risk Management: A Safety & Health Perspective Jonathan D. Kipp, Murrey E. Loflin While risk management techniques have been successfully used to reduce the potential for physical harm to the public, these proven methods, strangely enough, have not been applied to one of the most hazardous environments of all—fire fighting operations. The result is that more than 100,000 injuries occur to fire fighters each year. Emergency Incident Risk Management shows fire chiefs, fire officers, safety officers, and risk managers—for the first time anywhere—how to develop and implement a comprehensive risk management program that can sharply reduce on-the-job fatalities, injuries, and harmful exposures while minimizing property and equipment damage. Expanding on the information presented in the National Fire Protection Association 1500 Handbook, this thorough guide covers every phase of effective risk management—from assigning roles and preplanning, through all the steps in a solid risk management plan, to handling actual emergency incidents. With the help of illuminating examples, Emergency Incident Risk Management demonstrates how to: - analyze accident, injury, and illness data
- identify and evaluate risk
- establish risk management priorities
- formulate and implement sound risk control measures
- monitor and fine-tune the risk management program
- incorporate risk management into an incident management system
- use and maintain proper personal protective equipment
Further, the book addresses federal standards that safety administrators must observe, providing crucial compliance information on OSHA’s regulations covering bloodborne pathogens, confined spaces, respiratory protection, and hazardous waste operations and emergency response—in addition to the NFPA standards. The book, in fact, is so complete it even covers how to utilize cost/benefit analysis to ensure effective risk management decision making. Written by a longtime certified safety professional and an experienced fire officer, Emergency Incident Risk Management should be regularly consulted by every professional who administers or operates corporate, municipal, military, or private emergency response programs.
