Non-state groups and specific states alike advocate alternative global politics, at the same time finding themselves demonized as pariahs and outlaws who disturb established systems of governance. However, over time, some of these actors not only manage to shake off such allegations, but even find their normative convictions accepted by international institutions. This book develops an innovative conceptual framework to understand and explain these processes, using seven cases studies in diverse policy fields; including international security, health, migration, religion and internet politics. This framework demonstrates the importance of coalition-building and strategic framing in order to form a successful resistance and bring change in world politics.

Es prasentiert die Ergebnisse des von der Volkswagen-Stiftung im Rahmen des Schwerpunktes "Globale Strukturen und deren Steuerung" geforderten Forschungsprojekts "Globalisierung als Triebfeder einer welt weiten Angleichung von Mustern und Zielen politischer Steuerung?," das in der Zeit von 1999 bis 2002 unter Leitung von Klaus Dieter Wolf an der Technischen Universitat Darmstadt durchgeftihrt wurde. Das Ziel dieses Forschungsprojekts bestand darin, der weltweiten Wir kung einer Idee nachzugehen - namlich der des vor zehn Jahren auf der UNCED-Konferenz in Rio de Janeiro in der Agenda 21 aus der Taufe geho benen Leitbildes der nachhaltigen Entwicklung. Der Prozess der "Verweltge sellschaftung," der die Klammer der unterschiedlichen Forschungsstrange bildet, in die sich die Arbeit der Forschungsgruppe Weltgesellschaft seit der Veroffentlichung ihrer "Plattform" in der Politischen Vierteljahresschrift im Jahr 1996 diversifiziert hat, drtickt sich kaum irgendwo deutlicher aus als in der in diesem Buch analysierten Homogenisierung von Zielen und Mustern politischer Steuerung.
