The number of RNGOs engaging with the United Nations (UN) has grown considerably in recent years: RNGOs maintain relations with various UN agencies, member-state missions, and other NGOs, and participate in UN conferences and events. This volume includes both a quantitative overview of RNGOs at the UN and qualitative analyses of specific policy issues such as international development, climate change, business and human rights, sexual and reproductive health and rights, international criminal justice, defamation of religions, and intercultural dialogue and cooperation. The contributions explore the factors that explain the RNGOs' normative positions and actions and scrutinise the assumption that religions introduce non-negotiable principles into political debate and decision-making that inevitably lead to conflict and division. This edited volume analyses different forms of resistance against international institutions and charts their success or failure in changing the normative orders embodied in these institutions. Non-state groups and specific states alike advocate alternative global politics, at the same time finding themselves demonized as pariahs and outlaws who disturb established systems of governance. However, over time, some of these actors not only manage to shake off such allegations, but even find their normative convictions accepted by international institutions. This book develops an innovative conceptual framework to understand and explain these processes, using seven cases studies in diverse policy fields; including international security, health, migration, religion and internet politics. This framework demonstrates the importance of coalition-building and strategic framing in order to form a successful resistance and bring change in world politics.

Das Ziel dieses Forschungsprojekts bestand darin, der weltweiten Wir kung einer Idee nachzugehen - namlich der des vor zehn Jahren auf der UNCED-Konferenz in Rio de Janeiro in der Agenda 21 aus der Taufe geho benen Leitbildes der nachhaltigen Entwicklung. Der Prozess der "Verweltge sellschaftung," der die Klammer der unterschiedlichen Forschungsstrange bildet, in die sich die Arbeit der Forschungsgruppe Weltgesellschaft seit der Veroffentlichung ihrer "Plattform" in der Politischen Vierteljahresschrift im Jahr 1996 diversifiziert hat, drtickt sich kaum irgendwo deutlicher aus als in der in diesem Buch analysierten Homogenisierung von Zielen und Mustern politischer Steuerung.
