Flow meters measure the volumetric flow rate in a pipeline. Most meters are based on deriving a signal from the fluid flow and calibrating the signal against the volumetric flow rate. The calibration is done in fully-developed flow, and the same state of flow must exist at the meter's position when it is in practical use. Because the field of flow metering has been neglected by fluid mechanicists for a long time, this book addresses two major fluid mechanical problems in flow metering: the analysis of signal generation in turbulent pipe flow, which explains the function of the meter beyond a simple calibration, and the possible use of a meter in non-developed flows. These problems are investigated with reference to, and examples from, a variety of meters, e.g. ultrasound cross-correlation meters, vortex meters, and turbine meters. Studying these problems requires consideration of specific phenomena in turbulent non-developed pipe flow, as caused by installations, and finding special solutions with signal processing, both of which are included in the book.

This volume contains 37 contributions in which the research work is summarized which has been carried out between 1984 and 1990 in the Priority Research Program "Physik abgeloster Stromungen" of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Society). The aim of the Priority Research Program was the inten sive research of the whole range of phenomena associated with separated flows. Physi cal models as well as prediction methods had to be developed based on detailed experi mental investigations. It was in accordance with the main concept of the research program that scientists working on problems of separated flows in different technical areas of application participated in this program. The following fields have been represented in the program: aerodynamics of wings and bodies, aerodynamics of auto mobiles, turbomachinery, ship hydrodynamics, hydraulics, internal flows, heat exchan gers, bio-fluid-dynamics, aerodynamics of buildings and structures. In order to concentrate on problems common in all those areas the emphasis of the program was on basic research dealing with generic geometric configurations showing the fundamental physical phenomena of separated flows. The engagement and enthusiasm of all participating scientists are highly appreciated. The program was organized such that all researchers met once a year to report on the progress of their work. Special thanks ought to go to Prof. E. A. Muller (Gottingen), Prof. H. Oertel jun. (Braunschweig), Dr. W. Schmidt (Dornier), Dr. H. -W. Stock (Dornier) and Dr. B. Wagner (Dornier), who had the functions of referees on those annual meetings."

Das Buch bietet eine umfassende, systematische Darstellung der Impuls-, Warme- und Stoffubertragung. Dabei wenden die Autoren konsequent asymptotische Methoden (grosse und kleine Werte der Reynolds-Zahlen oder anderer charakteristischer Kennzahlen) an und betonen die physikalischen Grundlagen. Zum Verstandnis sind mathematische Grundkenntnisse erforderlich.

Die Uberarbeitung fur die 10. deutschsprachige Auflage von Hermann Schlichtings Standardwerk wurde wiederum von Klaus Gersten geleitet, der schon die umfassende Neuformulierung der 9. Auflage vorgenommen hatte. Es wurden durchgangig Aktualisierungen vorgenommen, aber auch das Kapitel 15 von Herbert Oertel jr. neu bearbeitet. Das Buch gibt einen umfassenden Uberblick uber den Einsatz der Grenzschicht-Theorie in allen Bereichen der Stromungsmechanik. Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt bei den Umstromungen von Korpern (z.B. Flugzeugaerodynamik).

Das Buch wird wieder den Studenten der Stromungsmechanik wie auch Industrie-Ingenieuren ein unverzichtbarer Partner unerschopflicher Informationen sein."
