This volume contains the papers presented at the 9th European Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (ECCBR 2008). Case-based reasoning (CBR) is an arti?cial intelligence approach whereby new problems are solved by remembering, adapting and reusing solutions to a previously solved, similar problem. The collection of previously solved problems andtheirassociatedsolutionsisstoredinthecasebase. Neworadaptedsolutions are learned and updated in the case base as needed. In remembrance of the First European Workshop on Case-Based Reasoning, which took place 15 years ago at the European Academy Otzenhausen, not far from Trier, this year's conference was especially devoted to the past, present, and future of case-based reasoning. ECCBR and the International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (IC- CBR) alternate every year. ECCBR 2008 followed a series of seven successful European workshops previously held in Otzenhausen, Germany (1993), Ch- tilly, France (1994), Lausanne, Switzerland (1996), Dublin, Ireland (1998), and Trento, Italy (2000), and three European conferences in Aberdeen, UK (2002), ] Madrid, Spain (2004), and Olu ]deniz/Fethiye, Turkey (2006). The International Conferences on Case-Based Reasoning (ICCBR) were previously held in Ses- bra, Portugal (1995), Providence, Rhode Island, USA (1997), Seeon, Germany (1999), Vancouver, Canada (2001), Trondheim, Norway (2003), Chicago, USA (2005), and Belfast, Northern Ireland (2007). These meetings have a history of attracting ?rst-class European and international researchers and practiti- ers. The proceedings of the ECCBR and ICCBR conferences are published by Springer in their LNAI series."

Professional knowledge management is imperative for the success of enterprises. One decisive factor for the success of knowledge management projects is the coordination of elements such as corporate culture, enterprise organization, - man resource management, as well as information and communication techn- ogy. The proper alignment and balancing of these factors are currently little understood especially the role of information technology, which is often - garded only as an implementation tool, though it can be a catalyst by making new knowledge management solutions possible. This conference brought together representativesfrom practical and research ?elds for discussing experiences, professional applications, and visions through presentations, workshops, tutorials, and an accompanying industry exhibition. The main focus of the conference was the realization of knowledge mana- ment strategies with the aid of innovative information technology solutions, such as intelligent access to organizational memories, or integration of business processes and knowledge management. Also of interest were holistic/integrative approaches to knowledge management that deal with issues raised by the in- gration of people, organizations, and information technology."

In just few years, case-based reasoning has evolved from a research topic studied at a small number of specialized academic labs into an industrial-strength technology applied in various fields. The INRECA methodology presented in detail in this monograph provides a data analysis framework for developing case-based reasoning solutions for successful applications in real-world industrial contexts.

The book is divided into parts on:

- smarter business with case-based decision support;
- developing case-based applications using the INRECA methodology; and
- using the methodology in various application domains.

The book provides a self-contained introduction to case-based reasoning applications that address both R&D professionals and general IT managers interested in this powerful new technology.

In this second edition, improvements and updates have been incorporated throughout the text. Particularly useful is the systematic coverage of experience factory applications at various steps; and, of course, the references have been extended substantially.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Learning Software Organizations, LSO 2001, held in Kaiserslautern, Germany, in September 2001.The twelve revised full papers presented together with an introductory overview, keynote and panel summaries, and three posters were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. Among the topics addressed are organizational learning in dynamic domains, knowledge management in software development, Web-based collaborative learning, knowledge management support, software process improvement, Web-based data mining, process-integrated learning, process-centered software engineering education, etc.

The biennial International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (ICCBR) - ries, which began in Sesimbra, Portugal, in 1995, was intended to provide an international forum for the best fundamental and applied research in case-based reasoning (CBR). It was hoped that such a forum would encourage the g- wth and rigor of the eld and overcome the previous tendency toward isolated national CBR communities. The foresight of the original ICCBR organizers has been rewarded by the growth of a vigorous and cosmopolitan CBR community. CBR is now widely recognized as a powerful and important computational technique for a wide range of practical applications. By promoting an exchange of ideas among CBR researchers from across the globe, the ICCBR series has facilitated the broader acceptance and use of CBR. ICCBR-99 has continued this tradition by attracting high-quality research and applications papers from around the world. Researchers from 21 countries submitted 80 papers to ICCBR-99. From these submissions, 17 papers were selected for long oral presentation, 7 were accepted for short oral presentation, and 19 papers were accepted as posters. This volume sets forth these 43 papers, which contain both mature work and innovative new ideas.

This volume presents the 36 full refereed papers selected from the presentations at the First European Workshop on Case-Based Reasoning, held at Kaiserslautern, Germany in November 1993.
Case-based reasoning (CBR) has recently attracted much interest among AI researchers: it supports knowledge acquisition and problem solving, and it is related to machine learning, analogical reasoning, cognitive modeling, similarity, and information retrieval. EWCBR is now established as the prime European forum for CBR research. This volume reflects the importance of this dynamic area of research through essential contributions to all aspects of CBR research and advanced applications.

Methodological knowledge acquisition and knowledge engineering have achievedincreasing attention in recent years due both to active research projects and to successful practical applications. Both aspects have over the years been reflected in the structure of the European Knowledge Acquisition Workshops (EKAW), where a users' forum has always been combined with a scientific workshop. This volume contains the proceedings of EKAW-92. The papers are organized into five thematic sectionson: - Technology transfer - General modelling approaches - Knowledgeformalization and automated methods - Elicitation and diagnosis of human knowledge - Practice and experiences of knowledge acquisition. A total of 65 persons from around the world served as the program committee. Their recommendations and sometimes very detailed comments helped both workshop organizers and individual authors to achieve the high quality reflected in this volume.

Dieses Buch setzt sich mit der Fehlerdiagnose technischer Systeme aus- einander. Ausgangspunkt und zentraler Kern war das Forschungsprojekt "Diagnose technischer Systeme" im Rahmen des von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft gefoerderten Sonderforschungsbereiches "Kunst- liche Intelligenz und Wissensbasierte Systeme" an der Universitat Kaisers- lautern. Das Projekt beinhaltete eine Gemeinschaftsarbeit mit dem Labora- torium fur Werkzeugmaschinen und Betriebslehre (WZL) der RWTH Aachen. Dieser Zusammenarbeit lag die Einsicht zugrunde, dass zur Erstellung eines Expertensystems in einem hochkomplexen Anwendungs- bereich verschiedenartige Strukturarbeiten sowohl von der Anwenderseite als auch von der Informatikseite zu leisten sind. So war denn auch das Er- kennen grundlegender formaler Strukturen ein wesentlicher Teil der Arbeit, an der die einzelnen Anteile im nachhinein kaum mehr zu trennen sind. Das Anwendungsgebiet ist die Fehlerdiagnose von CNC-Bearbeitungs- zentren (CNC = Computerized Numerical Control). Hier handelt es sich um Anwendungen von gleichzeitig hohem wissenschaftlichen wie auch wirt- schaftlichen Interesse. In Erganzung zu den zunachst erstellten Basis- ansatzen wurden in Kaiserslautern dann weitere Techniken der Kunstlichen Intelligenz entwickelt, die wiederum mit den Wissenschaftlern des WZL abgestimmt wurden. Auf diese Weise entstand ein vielschichtiges Projekt mit dem Namen MOLTKE. MOLTKE steht dabei fur "MOdels, Learning and Temporal Knowl dge in f', xpert systems for technical diagnosis", womit die wichtigsten Einzelaktivitaten genannt sind: Der Einsah von Maschinen- modellen, die Entwicklung von Lemverfahren und die Reprasentation zeitlich veranderlicher Situationen.
