Dance Education - A Redefinition (Hardcover): Susan R. Koff Dance Education - A Redefinition (Hardcover)
Susan R. Koff
R2,888 Discovery Miles 28 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Winner of the 2021 Ruth Lovell Murray Book Award Dance Education redefines the nature of dance pedagogy today, setting it within a holistic and encompassing framework, and argues for an approach to dance education from a soci-cultural and philosophical perspective. In the past, dance education has focused on the learning of dance, limited to Western-based societies, with little attention to how dance is learned and applied globally. This book seeks to re-frame the way dance education is defined, approached and taught by looking beyond the privileged Western dance forms to compare education from different cultures. Structured into three parts, this book examines the following essential questions: - What is dance? What defines dance as an art form? - How and where is dance performed and for what purpose? - How do social contexts shape the making and interpretation of dance? The first part covers the history of dance education and its definition. The second part discusses current contexts and applications, including global contexts and the ability to apply and comprehend dance education in a variety of contexts. This book opens up definitions, rather than categorising, so that dance is not presented in a hierarchical form. The third part continues to define dance education in ways that have not been discussed in the past: informal contexts. The book then returns to the original definition of dance education as a way of knowing oneself and the world around us, ending on the philosophical application of this self-knowledge as a way to be in the world and to engage with others, regardless of background. This textbook is a refreshing and much-needed contribution to the field of dance studies by one of the most eminent voices in the field.

Environmental Security in Transnational Contexts - What Relevance for Regional Human Security Regimes? (Paperback): Harlan... Environmental Security in Transnational Contexts - What Relevance for Regional Human Security Regimes? (Paperback)
Harlan Koff, Carmen Maganda
R1,231 Discovery Miles 12 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Much of the discussion surrounding the definition of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 global development agenda has contextualized sustainable development within the framework of 'transformation', specifically prioritizing concepts such as equity, security, justice, and rights. While these debates correctly discussed power imbalances and relational obstacles to human development they have remained abstract because they focused only on the international level. In this regard, discussions have not adequately examined mechanisms that facilitate or block the emergence of sustainable development as a political priority, nor do they address specific policy proposals to link environmental justice to human development strategies. This book contends that human and environmental security should be framed in terms of transnational discussions rather than being limited to general international debates in order to examine both governance challenges and potential policy mechanisms that can effectively address environmental security issues that cross national boundaries. The chapters in this volume undertake an empirical examination of the relationships between human and environmental security, cross-border exchanges, and regional integration. They address the relationships between international norms, transnational human and environmental security issues, and the regionalization of governance in different parts of the world as the book includes comparative analyses as well as case studies from Europe, Asia and the Americas. The chapters originally published as a special issue in Globalizations.

Local Citizenship in Recent Countries of Immigration - Japan in Comparative Perspective (Hardcover): Takeyuki Tsuda Local Citizenship in Recent Countries of Immigration - Japan in Comparative Perspective (Hardcover)
Takeyuki Tsuda; Contributions by Chikako Usui, Katherine Tegtmeyer Pak, Keiko Yamanaka, Deborah J. Milly, …
R3,163 Discovery Miles 31 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Because of severe domestic labor shortages, Japan has recently joined the increasing number of advanced industrialized nations that have begun importing large numbers of immigrant workers since the 1980s. Although the citizenship status of foreign workers is the most precarious in such recent countries of immigration, the national governments of these countries have become increasingly preoccupied with border enforcement, forcing local municipalities and organizations to offer basic rights and social services to the foreign residents who are settling in their local communities. This book analyzes the development of local citizenship in Japan by examining the role of local governments and NGOs as well as grass-roots political and judicial activism in the expansion of immigrant rights. In this manner, localities are emerging as important sites for the struggle for immigrant citizenship and social integration, enabling foreign workers to enjoy substantive rights even in the absence of national citizenship. The possibilities and limits of such local citizenship in Japan are then compared to three other recent countries of immigration (Italy, Spain, and South Korea).

Citizen Participation in Non-profit Governance (Paperback): Sondra Z. Koff Citizen Participation in Non-profit Governance (Paperback)
Sondra Z. Koff
R1,072 Discovery Miles 10 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nonprofit organizations, their governing structures, boards of directors, and their newest constituency, members who represent the public at large, are the subject of this book. In recent years, new mechanisms have been developed to link citizens with government and with diverse policy-making entities. Earlier, it was assumed that citizens had little interest in policy deliberations, and responsibility for public needs was best left to the experts. Many citizens now believe that they have a legitimate right to infl uence how power is exercised in public organizations. Koff constructs a demographic profi le of public members, their activities, and their opinions about board membership. She also catalogues the perspectives of executive directors about public members, identifi es specifi c problems related to public participation, and suggests strategies to help resolve them. How effectively these bodies perform, and how well they respond to the public, are in part determined by the talents and activities of their members. All of these members, especially public members, need appropriate tools to be able to perform in a superior fashion. Despite the importance of governing bodies to an organization's performance, there has been little examination of board members in general and specifi cally of public members. This is the first book-length study on the subject.

Topics in Vaccine Adjuvant Research (Hardcover): Dale R. Spriggs, Wayne C. Koff Topics in Vaccine Adjuvant Research (Hardcover)
Dale R. Spriggs, Wayne C. Koff
R5,560 Discovery Miles 55 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Topics in Vaccine Adjuvant Research provides a concise, focused review of the immunological basis of adjuvant activity. The first section of the book contains several chapters that discuss key issues in cellular immunology, such as antigen processing and presentation, cytokine regulation of immune responses, and mucosal immunology. The second section consists of brief chapters on the mechanism of action of several adjuvants, including IL-2, nonionic block polymers, and cholera toxin. The major goals of this book are to define what is known about the mechanisms of adjuvant activity, show how research in cellular immunology can be used to help understand adjuvant action, and define possible areas where adjuvants might be useful probes for dissecting basic immunological processes. Immunologists, microbiologists, and infectious disease researchers will find this book an invaluable addition to their reference library.

Nursing in the European Union - The World of Work (Hardcover): Sondra Z. Koff Nursing in the European Union - The World of Work (Hardcover)
Sondra Z. Koff
R2,606 Discovery Miles 26 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nursing in the European Union demonstrates how the European Union (EU) has refashioned the nursing world throughout the Member States via its power in many other policy domains. Volume 1 focused on the EU's impact on nursing education, regulation, and research endeavours. This volume focuses on real-life situations and problems EU nurses face-wages, stress, work environments, and dispute resolution-and places them in a comparative perspective. In this unique work, Sondra Z. Koff develops a profile of nurses' workplaces, highlighting similarities and diversities, challenges, and nurses' opinions. Though it has limited formal authority in the health and health care sectors, the EU has had a significant impact on the working life of these practitioners in areas such as employment options, industrial relations and their outcomes, organizational and environmental features of nurses' workplaces, collective action, and more. New policies and legalities are regulating the production, distribution, practices, and organization of nursing according to supranational standards. Koff helps to fill a gap in the literature, given the dearth of comparative, cross-national, book-length studies of the nursing profession. By adopting a framework focused on an institution, policies, and politics, Koff addresses these topics from the perspective of multiple actors, both national and international.

Europeanization has generated a galaxy of regimes, laws, organizations, new actors, and networks that have diluted institutional barriers to interaction across national borders. Many nation-based policy competencies have been transferred to the European level. The European Union (EU), the world's first regional regulator, bears consequences for the development of public policy and for policies affiliated with the nursing profession. With limited exception, the EU does not have formal powers in the health care arena. However, as a result of its efforts in other fields, it has been heavily involved with health care and its providers. Nursing in the European Union demonstrates how the organization has refashioned the nursing world throughout the member states via its power in many other policy domains. This volume focuses on the EU's impact on nursing education, regulation, and research endeavours, and suggests strategies to achieve desired objectives. Volume 2, Nursing in the European Union: The World of Work, to be published in Fall 2016, focuses on real-life situations and problems EU nurses face: wages, stress, and dispute resolution. Sondra Z. Koff integrates the European experience with a discussion of nursing in the real world, and presents the nursing profession in light of the European Union, its components, its mechanisms, and its output and activities.

Human Vaccines: Emerging Technologies in Design and Development discusses the advances in molecular biology, biophysics, and informatics-among other disciplines-that have provided scientists with the tools to create new vaccines against emerging and re-emerging pathogens. For example, the virus-like particle technologies that led to licensing of highly efficacious HPV vaccines have only come into full realization in the last 10 years. Their success has, in turn, accelerated the pace with which nanoparticle vaccines are being developed Given the rapidity with which the field is changing and the absence of any text documenting this change, there is a need for a resource that surveys these new vaccine technologies, assesses their potential, and describes their applications. This book provides that resource and complements traditional vaccinology books, but also serves as an excellent standalone for researchers and students with basic knowledge in immunology.

Something to Tell You - The Road Families Travel When a Child Is Gay (Paperback, Revised): Gilbert Herdt, Bruce Koff Something to Tell You - The Road Families Travel When a Child Is Gay (Paperback, Revised)
Gilbert Herdt, Bruce Koff; Foreword by Paul Beeman
R985 Discovery Miles 9 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Even now, at the end of the twentieth century, many still have difficulty standing up and saying, "I am the parent of a gay child." "Something to Tell You" recounts the stories of families whose lives have been touched by the discovery that a child is lesbian or gay -- how it affects and influences people's perceptions of their children and even changes the self-image of parents themselves.

Focusing on fifty average families -- not people seen in clinics or therapy -- the authors found a consistent pattern of change: first negative, then positive. Sometimes the news led parents and siblings to form stronger bonds with the child, with each other, and with other relatives and friends. In many cases, their child's partner and partner's family grew to assume an important role in their own lives. In some cases, parents and siblings discovered new meaning in their lives through speaking out or joining PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and becoming part of the struggle for lesbian and gay rights. The authors found that families committed to staying together are typically able to overcome the powerful obstacles imposed by society.

"Something to Tell You" also shows the lasting and sometimes tragic consequences for families who falter in the process of integration. Unwilling to accept their child's sexuality, some parents sought to blame each other, and all too often their own relationships unraveled as a result. Others who failed to tell close friends sometimes lost those friends through keeping secrets. Parents who neglected to form bonds with their child's partner fostered climates of alienation that persisted for years.

A richly diverse collection of family stories, "Something to Tell You" is a book that will help break down widespread prejudice and put an end to destructive cultural myths. It affirms families' highest aspirations toward "active" love for their gay children, showing the steps to take toward new levels of support, solidarity, and love.

In 1994, Rwanda was the scene of the first acts since World War II to be legally defined as genocide. Two years later, Clea Koff, a twenty-three-year-old forensic anthropologist, left the safe confines of a lab in Berkeley, California, to serve as one of sixteen scientists chosen by the United Nations to unearth the physical evidence of the Rwandan genocide. Over the next four years, Koff's grueling investigations took her across geography synonymous with some of the worst crimes of the twentieth century. "
The Bone Woman" is Koff's unflinching, riveting account of her seven UN missions to Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, and Rwanda, as she shares what she saw, how it affected her, who was prosecuted based on evidence she found, and what she learned about the world. Yet even as she recounts the hellish nature of her work and the heartbreak of the survivors, she imbues her story with purpose, humanity, and a sense of justice. A tale of science in service of human rights, "The Bone Woman" is, even more profoundly, a story of hope and enduring moral principles.
