catapulting him to the rank of Seven Star in record time. ...Except
he didn’t. The truth is, he screwed up big time, and now he has
to maintain his position there no matter what. It's a liar's world,
after all!

In this book, a framework of the investment function is developed
that allows for the heterogeneity of capital goods, i.e., the
Multiple q model, and investment behavior in Japan by employing
this Multiple q framework is developed. The standard approach to
investment behavior is Tobin's q theory in which the investment
rate is a linear function of only the q ratio, or a firm's market
value measured by its capital goods. As is well known, however, its
empirical performance has been almost universally unsatisfactory.
Thus the development of a new framework. The authors inquire into
and statistically test null hypotheses set on such issues as (a)
heterogeneity of multiple capital goods, (b) non-convex adjustment
costs to inspire lumpy investment, (c) differences in the
adjustment costs in accumulating capital stock through new
purchases, second-hand market acquisitions, and large-scale
repairs, and (d) capital market imperfections. The test results
show that, irrespective of the time period, firms' size, and the
industry to which firms belong, (a) multiple capital goods are not
homogeneous, (b) some firms face adjustment cost structures that
eventually lead to occasional lumpy investment, (c) the method of
acquiring investment matters in accumulating capital stock, and (d)
capital market imperfections would constrain some lumpy investment.
This book is published in cooperation with the Research Institute
of Capital Formation, Development Bank of Japan.

THIS NEW LIFE IS PAWS-ITIVELY SWELL! Newly-adopted cat Nyao has a
secret he can never reveal: he’s actually a human boy named Nao.
And worse, he used to be classmates with his new owner, Chika!
He’s getting used to his new daily diet of belly rubs and
treats—is it enough to tempt him away from ever trying to return
to his human body?
This book provides a complete course for beginning students who
want to learn the Katakana alphabet! With plentiful writing and
reading practice, this workbook starts with the basic letters and
works up to writing words and complete sentences. Divided into two
parts, the first part presents the 46 main Katakana letters in
their full and contracted forms, with extensive writing spaces
provided for writing practice. Recognition and pronunciation of the
letters are reinforced through writing and listening exercises. In
the second half of the book, students can apply their knowledge of
Katakana in a Writing Practice section that contains sentences
related to contexts in which Katakana words are often used, such as
food and drinks, social media and tourism. Exercises are graded in
difficulty from Writing Drills (from copying to writing from
memory) to Dictation Practice (connecting the sounds with the
letters) to Writing Exercises (writing answers that fit the
situations given). Features of this language workbook include: A
thorough overview of the Japanese writing system, explaining when
and how Katakana is used Handwriting and stroke-order tips along
with extensive writing practice sheets Online audio recordings
speed up the process by reinforcing the pronunciation of the
letters through a wide variety of listening and writing exercises
Mnemonic illustrations for every character Printable flashcards
available online for download The Japanese writing system combines
three types of letters: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Katakana is
used for transcription of foreign language words into Japanese; in
the writing of loan words; for emphasis; to represent onomatopoeia;
for technical and scientific terms; for names of plants, animals,
minerals and often Japanese companies.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the "Second
International Workshop on Cooperative Buildings (CoBuild'99) -
Integrating Information, Organizations, and Architecture" held at
the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh on October 1-2, 1999. The
success of the First International Workshop on Cooperative
Buildings (CoBuild'98), held at GMD in Darmstadt in February 1998,
showed that there is a demand for an appropriate forum to present
research about the intersection of information technology,
organizational innovation, and architecture. Thus, it was decided
to organize a follow-up event. The decision of where to organize
CoBuild'99 was straight forward. Since we had many high quality
contributions from the United States (U. S. ) presented at
CoBuild'98, we wanted to hold the second workshop in the U. S.
reaching out to a large audience and at the same time turning it
into an international series of events held in different places in
the world. Due to the excellent work carried out at Carnegie Mellon
University, it was an obvious choice to ask Volker Hartkopf from
the Department of Architecture and Jane Siegel from the Human
Computer Interaction Institute to be conference cochairs for
CoBuild'99. The workshop is organized in cooperation with the
German National Research Center for Information Technology (GMD),
in particular the Integrated Publication and Information Systems
Institute (IPSI) in Darmstadt providing continuity between the
events.
This volume constitutes the proceedings of the First International
Workshop on - operative Buildings (CoBuild'98) - Integrating
Information, Organization, and Ar chitecture, held in Darmstadt,
Germany, on February 25-26, 1998. The idea for this workshop and
actually the term "cooperative building" was created during the
activi ties of initiating the consortium "Workspaces of the Future"
for conducting an inter disciplinary R&D program in cooperation
with partners from industry. We discovered that there was no
appropriate forum to present research at the intersection of
informa tion technology, organizational innovation, and
architecture. The theme "Integrating information, organization, and
architecture" reflects the challenges resulting from current and
future developments in these three areas. In the future, work and
cooperation in organizations will be characterized by a degree of
dynamics, flexibility, and mobility that will go far beyond many of
today's develop ments and examples. The introduction of information
and communication technology has already changed processes and
contents of work significantly. However, the de sign of work
environments, especially physical work spaces as offices and
buildings, remained almost unchanged. It is time to reflect these
developments in the design of equally dynamic, flexible, and mobile
work environments. The papers of this volume show that this is an
interdisciplinary endeavor requiring a wide range of perspectives
and the utilization of results from various areas of research and
practice.
