Georg Ernst Stahl (1659-1734) opposed reducing living nature to the inorganic laws of physics or chemistry. His ATheoria Medica VeraA (1708) showed the importance of 'whole person' medicine, in which the unity of all perceptive intelligence, mental, emotional, and physical, are used by the organism to sustain both its moral and material actions. The book traces the life of Stahl and his teaching career at the University of Halle and his influence at the court in Berlin, where he was first physician to King Frederick William I. Special attention is paid to his affiliation with August Hermann Francke and Pietism in Halle, but also to Stahl's popularity in more radical religious circles.

Global Geological Record of Lake Basins is the first in a short series of books containing concise geological summaries of lake basin deposits. Geoscientists worldwide have co-operated to bring together the information available on a global spectrum of lacustrine deposits - looking in particular at palaeoenvironmental aspects. The compilation has resulted from IGCP 219 - Comparative Lacustrine Sedimentology in Space and Time - which has given impetus to the field of limnogeology. Lacustrine deposits are widespread throughout the geological record, and this series of books will assess, for every geological time window, key lacustrine sequences worldwide in the form of short summaries of specific deposits. A common language will be defined to describe these deposits.

Die Brennstoffzellen haben die Phantasie von Technikern aller Richtungen schon von jeher besonders angeregt. Der Wunsch, elektrische Energie direkt aus fossilen Brennstoffen zu gewinnen, ist zuerst um die Jahrhundertwende aus theoretischen UEberlegungen heraus entstanden. Von 1920 an datierten ernst- hafte Versuche, diese theoretische Moeglichkeit auch experimentell zu verwirk- lichen. Aber erst in den Jahren nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg kann man eine moderne technologische Entwicklung beobachten. Die Ursache daflir waren die Verbesserung der Materialien, die als Baustoffe dienen konnten, die Erkennt- nisse in der Katalyse, und nicht zuletzt die Notwendigkeit, flir die Weltraum- forschung geeignete Stromquellen auf der Basis von Wasserstoff und Sauerstoff zur VerfUgung zu stellen. In den siebziger Jahren wurde die Technologie der Brennstoffzellen erd- gebunden, und man versuchte, ihre Vorteile flir den Kraftwerksbau nutzbar zu machen. Als Brennstoffe verwendete man Erdgas und Dieseloel, die in Dampf- reaktoren umgeformt wurden, so dass wieder Wasserstoff der eigentliche Brenn- stoff war. Als Resultat der Erdoelverknappung und des Umweltbewusstseins ist in der vergangenen Dekade das Interesse an Brennstoffzellen betrachtlich gestiegen. Ebenso hat der Enthusiasmus uber ihre Zukunftsaussichten nach einem voruber- gehenden Tief wieder zugenommen. Anwendungen fur Brennstoffzellen sind: Kleine Aggregate zur Stromerzeu- gung, zunachst als Ersatz fur Dieselmotor-Generatoren in entlegenen Lokalitaten, spater vielleicht fur den Fahrzeugantrieb; mittelgrosse Anlagen zur Produktion von Elektrizitat in Kraftwerken innerhalb von Stadtbezirken; grosse Brennstoff- batterien fur den Lastausgleich in Verbundnetzen.

Unter Sozialen Reprasentationen versteht man einen historisch ablaufenden gesellschaftlichen Prozess der Elaboration, Kommunikation und Verbreitung von Wissenssystemen" (Wagner, 1994, S. 285). Das Konzept konzentriert sich auf den sozialen und kulturellen Hintergrund verschiedener Personen und erscheint daher besonders geeignet, die Vorstellungen uber den Euro verschiedener Gruppen zu untersuchen. Insgesamt wurden 498 Personen aus Osterreich, Belgien und Italien befragt, um ihre Sozialen Reprasentationen und Einstellungen zum Euro zu untersuchen.
