This book gathers the peer-reviewed proceedings of the 12th Annual Meeting of the Bulgarian Section of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, BGSIAM'17, held in Sofia, Bulgaria, in December 2017. The general theme of BGSIAM'17 was industrial and applied mathematics, with a particular focus on: high-performance computing, numerical methods and algorithms, analysis of partial differential equations and their applications, mathematical biology, control and uncertain systems, stochastic models, molecular dynamics, neural networks, genetic algorithms, metaheuristics for optimization problems, generalized nets, and Big Data.

This book presents recent research on Advanced Computing in Industrial Mathematics, which is one of the most prominent interdisciplinary areas, bringing together mathematics, computer science, scientific computations, engineering, physics, chemistry, medicine, etc. Further, the book presents the major tools used in Industrial Mathematics, which are based on mathematical models, and the corresponding computer codes, which are used to perform virtual experiments to obtain new data or to better understand previous experimental findings. The protection of our environment is one of the major problems in the society. More and more important physical and chemical mechanisms are to be added to the air pollution models. Moreover, new reliable and robust control strategies for keeping the pollution caused by harmful compounds under certain safe levels have to be developed and used in a routine way. Well based and correctly analyzed large mathematical models can successfully be used to solve this task. The use of such models leads to the treatment of huge computational tasks. The efficient solution of such problems requires combined research from specialists working in different fields. The aim of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (NATO ARW) entitled "Advances in Air Pollution Modeling for Environmental Security" was to invite specialists from all areas related to large-scale air pollution modeling and to exchange information and plans for future actions towards improving the reliability and the scope of application of the existing air pollution models and tools. This ARW was planned to be an interdisciplinary event, which provided a forum for discussions between physicists, meteorologists, chemists, computer scientists and specialists in numerical analysis about different ways for improving the performance and the quality of the results of different air pollution models.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Numerical Methods and Applications, NMA 2006, held in Borovets, Bulgaria, in August 2006.

The 84 revised full papers presented together with 3 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 111 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on numerical methods for hyperbolic problems, robust preconditioning solution methods, Monte Carlo and quasi-Monte Carlo for diverse applications, metaheuristics for optimization problems, uncertain/control systems and reliable numerics, interpolation and quadrature processes, large-scale computations in environmental modelling, and contributed talks.

The NATO ARW held at Borovetz (Bulgaria), in the period 8-12 May, 2004 was devoted to the above questions. This book contains selected papers of the meeting in the following topics:
- improving the abilities of air pollution models to calculate reliable predictions of the pollution levels in a given domain and in real time by using adequate description of the physical and chemical processes,
- implementation of advanced numerical methods and algorithms in the models,
- efficient utilization of up-to-date computer architectures,
- development of mechanisms for studying particles (including here fine and ultra-fine particles), biogenic emissions, etc.
- optimization techniques in the study of the pollution levels, etc.

1. Contents of these proceedings. These proceedings contain most of the papers which were presented at the NATO ARW (Advanced Research Workshop) on "Large Scale Computations in Air Pollution Modelling." The workshop was held, from June 6 to June to, 1998, in Residence Bistritza, a beautiful site near Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, and at the foot of the mountain Vitosha. 2. Participants in the NATO ARW. Scientists from 23 countries in Europe, North America and Asia attended the meeting and participated actively in the discussions. The total number of participants was 57. The main topic of the discussions was the role of the large mathematical models in resolving difficult problems connected with the protection of our environment. 3. Major topics discussed at the workshop. The protection of our environment is one of the most important problems facing modern society. The importance of this problem has steadily increased during the last two-three decades, and environment protection will become even more important in the next century. Reliable and robust control strategies for keeping the pollution caused by harmful chemical compounds under certain safe levels have to be developed and used in a routine way. Large mathematical models, in which all important physical and chemical processes are adequately described, can successfully be used to solve this task.
